Shayna’s new article on The Athletic.

Can you link me? For some reason I am seeing the old charts.

The Feb 7th article is still showing the chart without Gauthier on it, for me.

Edit: N/M I found it. It's the Feb 25th article.

I would be interested in seeing her updated charts for the whole league.

I still can’t wrap my head around what Carolina was thinking giving up a first rounder sitting outside a playoff spot and sending no money back for Brady Skjei.

don’t get me wrong Brady is a good player. And even if you agree with that and many don’t. The metrics definitely say he’s not. But even if you think he is, they’ve got Slavin and Gardiner already over there on the left side. They have Hayden Fleury and their top d prospect Jake Bean who’s 21 and very close is also a lefty. They have big money tied up in Slavin Pesce Gardiner Hamilton (who will actually need a raise in a year) and now 5.25 in Skjei?

total desperation move to squeak into the playoffs. Gorton killed them here. Killed them.

No money retention is mind boggling and no condition on top ten pick..Gorts set up a relationship thru the Fox trade and then this years Keene trade and bingo picked his pocket.

Nah dude

No one is taking either of those guys straight up, Maybe Smith but that's a huge maybe

It's laughable to put Skjei and these guys in the same sentence
Staal no. Smith maybe. I think it was you who even said that a cap floor team may be interested in taking Smith’s full cap hit for the final year because the real money paid is less for it. Depends on how he plays down the stretch.

Staal and Smith are not the same as Skjei. Ignore the hive mind here and realize Skjei is a good, young player locked up on a reasonable deal.

Smith has a 15 team NTC, Staal has a Full NTC. They are older, worse than Skjei. Show some examples of comparable salary dumps with no money coming back? You are confident, the examples ought to be there. Similar age, salary, contract restrictions.

I ask the same questions because you haven't had a realistic, complete answer. What do you think I want to be right about? I haven't made a claim, just asking how the roster comes together.
It is realistic. You just dont want to accept it.

Just as it wasn't realistic Skjei would be moved without receiving salary back. Like I've been saying, it may cost a sweetener but it could get done. They are not owed much after July 1st.

OR

Do we get by for the next few seasons with a cheaper alternative in Brenden Dillon? It saves you the pain of trading Buch++. Or you use those assets for a different area of need.
There are many options. More so if you want a plug for a year or two while the kids develop.

Lol my bad...what you just said was supposed to be the other half of my thought as to why I like plugging in Dillon. Buys time for one of the LD prospects to develop and earn their way while still having a competent defenseman in Dillon who plays a rugged game.

Everyone wants to put Buch into a deal for a LHD, but I wouldn't be surprised if ADA was the trade bait.
I do it because I see him as the odd man out. Or at the very least, Gorton and co, have been trying to ship him out.

We can trade him for futures to keep the ball rolling forward.

IMO we need a LHD plug or LHD long term solution and a 3C. I'd rather sell Buch for a LHD than a 3C

Especially now that Kreider is here long term, it does seem like Buch does not have a long-term spot in the top 6.

So I would agree, if you can move him for something valuable, it's worth it to consider.

I'd prefer a top-10 pick a la the Edmonton discussion last year.

He got a 2 year bridge. I think he's out as a UFA.
From McKenzie and Friedman's reports, it seems they are pretty confident they can sign him long-term, but their current cap situation means they need to punt it down the road a couple years.

Non-Rangers fan here. I expected Fast to have been traded by the deadline. Does this non-move imply that the Rangers plan on re-signing Fast?
I think it implies the Rangers Front Office preferred keeping Fast as a sign of good faith with the team for the stretch run as opposed to the 3rd round pick they would have received. Maybe it would have been a 2nd round pick, which definitely gives pause, but it likely would have been a late 2nd from the acquiring playoff team. Fast is an important player on and off the ice for the team.

They also could still re-sign him if the salary ask is reasonable.

Skjei got moved to pay DeAngelo. It's probably going to be close in terms of years and dollars to what Skjei had left on his deal. Kreider barely got a raise and that likely comes from the cap increase this summer.

We should not put any assets into play into getting a LHD. Lindgren is going to be here, on his ELC. We have so many others that can come close to being in the NHL that it'll be best to try the internal options before exploring anything else. If they can move Smith in the offseason, and maybe Staal gets the boot, you could look at adding a veteran that could slide into a role on that side, otherwise there is no need to.

Is there a possibility if the internal options don't get it done to make a deal for one as a rental on the cheap? That's the way this team should go, if it needs to. Let Miller, Rykov, Hajek, and Reunanen battle it out for NHL time and if they can't do it next season, go find a veteran at the deadline that will help and let them try again the following season. Why make a push for a position that the team has their most organizational depth in? It makes no sense.

Regarding the LD position. We got to be able to assume a few things for sure, right?

-One is that we won’t trade Skjei away in February 2020 and then in June-July 2020 acquire Skjei II.

-If any move is made at LD it will not be a lateral move. I could see it being a for a true top guy, or much cheaper player. Like we still have cap issues.

-I can guarantee that Jeff Gorton is very aware of that he has made several BIG moves involving Ds, and in relation to any D that wasn’t a rookie those moves come in on a range from debatable to disastrous. Right? I really like Trouba. But Smith, Shatty... Skjei’s contract has been debated. Gorton was heavily involved in Yandle, Staal and Girardi.

Ds have easily been the one factor giving Gorton the most grey hairs. I am far from sold on that he is willing to make a bigger investment in that position.

-Let’s be honest, we still have ZERO room for kids on the left side of the blueline AND we got a bunch of kids on the farm that are pushing for those positions. Staal and Smith are here next season too. Hajak and Rykov are both “ready” to play a smaller role.

-Any top guy at LD would cost a ton of money. How are we affording that?

Please put back Chytil at center third line. I wonder if Buch is back does Mckegg sit ?

They have been listening on him, but I don't think they have been actively trying to trade him.

We have 5 top 6 players, counting Strome, who likely won't be here long term, and only 2 guys (Chytil and Kravtsov) who project to be top 6.

Meanwhile, we have Trouba, Fox and ADA on the right side. ADA will want to get paid. Trading him for a top 4 player on the left side makes more sense. We don't need to be paying him 5 mil to be playing on the 3rd pair and PP.
