I'll be more than a little irked if we end up missing the postseason with enough points to have gotten into a non-wild card spot in the Atlantic division. I miss the old conference format.
Even that would be an incredibly valuable lesson for the young guys, if not everybody on the team. Those Oct and Nov points count, every game counts and the league won't wait for you to get your shit together.

I think Staal stays and Smith goes to a team like Ottawa after his bonus is paid July 1

Use the 3 RD, Lindgren, Staal and 2 younger guys like Hajek , Rykov , Reunanen .... Maybe Robertson or Jones signs and start in AHL

I think Miller plays 1 more college yr

The wild card is Lundkvist . If he was LD he would be getting pencilled in now

Robertson is already under contract.

I don't think Robertson can play in Hartford next year? I think he's either NHL or juniors.

Based on his age and the fact that he was drafted out of the CHL, he would have to play in the CHL or NHL next year. However, the rule is age 20 (by a certain date) or 4 years. I don't know how, but he played 7 games in 2016-17 for Edmonton in the WHL. Was it an end of the year thing, similar to what happens in the AHL? Does that count as a year of service? If it does, then he can play in the AHL next year, but my guess is that it doesn't count toward the 4 year requirement.

What happens with the left side is going to be very interesting.

I wouldn't be shocked to see Rykov go back overseas. Hajek hasn't taken the step everything thought he was capable of.

I'd imagine Staal is back next season. I fully expect JG to take a package of Buch+a 1st+variable 3rd piece to market and see if there is a young, cost controlled top4 (with potential to be top pairing) LHD to be had.

Failing that, go grab a 2nd tier LHD from FA who can bridge the ~2 year gap for one of the kids to hopefully step in. Someone like a Forbort or Merrill.

Joel Edmundsun or Patrik Nemeth would be good.

which as I said prior to the game is what I expect from him. Don’t think there’s a big drop off there at all.
If Smith can play decent down the stretch, during a playoff push, it could help us move him in the offseason. He will have just 1 year remaining. May not even need to retain money.

I am all about seeing what it would cost to sign the veteran Dillon. Based on what he made in his last contract, maybe they can get him signed around $3 million for the next 3 years. Contingent on the Rangers being able to move Smith or Staal’s salary.

If Rykov doesn't make the team next year I fully expect him to go back to Russia

if he wants to make the team he needs to stay healthy for more than 3 days in a row...he can't say the rangers didn't give him a change this year, he's been hurt

Assuming he plays well, I could also see a cap floor team being interested for next year

His salary drops to half of what it is now, and is owed a 1 million signing bonus in the summer. Could have a team like Ottawa interested for cap purposes once the bonus is paid out

Yeah, unfortunately it seems to be bad luck for him

What are you gonna do I guess

Edmunson is a good player but I think he's going to price himself out of our range.

I have a massive, massive, massive issue with them running #18 out there now, I'll have an even bigger one if they do it next year.

You can't sell me on competing and improving if he is still getting minutes. He hinders both of those things.

A lot of us were clamoring to buy out Smith and or Smith and Staal over the summer instead of Shatty.

Kudos to management for keeping Smith up with the club and using him as a rover. If Gorts made the decision to not buy him out or send him down (I don't recall the cap ramifications completely and what the deal was if he was stashed) because he saw a future where Skjei or another D man would be dealt and needed to keep that option open - that is fantastic roster management.

Smith has well over 400 games played on D and if he plays the way he did last night the Rangers should be ok. You could tell he felt invigorated out there. Staal hasn't been terrible either. We've been pretty lucky with these two.

Also not related to the Rangers at all, but Ottawa having 11 picks in just the first two rounds of the next 2 drafts is bananaland

Plus they're probably going to have two top 5 picks this year

Sheesh

I doubt the Rangers risk Rykov exercising his out clause without giving him a legitimate shot.

yeah I mean hardly the organizations fault here. There’s been plenty of opportunity avail including right now. He just hasn’t been able to stay healthy. He needs a full summer and a chance to prove himself in camp.

If smith plays well here and I expect him to do about as well as Skjei has this year as I’ve said, I don’t see why anyone wouldn’t want to add a dman for 4.25 mil on a one year deal. I think he’s tradeable at that point. That would probably mean they keep Staal.

frankly if hank is bought out and they do the smart thing and let Fast walk for bigger dollars they don’t need to do anything else. Have money to sign DeAngelo Lemieux Georgie and Strome

I think you hit the nail on the head.

I would think Gorton would try to move Rykov to a team that has an opening he could compete for, before he allowed Rykov to go back overseas.

If he hasn't earned it, he hasn't earned it....and it sounds like between inconsistent play & unfortunate injuries, he hasn't.

They can't force him in the lineup in the midst of a playoff chase just to get a look at him. I do however think that either he or Hajek are 2 weeks of consistent play away from getting a call up.

The organization is probably begging for either of them to give a reason for a call up...it just hasn't happened yet. Oh well.
