It's a much better comparison than AAV. Caphit percentage combined with RFA years bought out in negotiations is the best way to compare contracts

I don’t disagree with that. Just many contracts are signed with the thought process that the cap hit percent will decrease a good amount as the years go on. That may not be the case now with a big hit to revenues from the virus. Brassard went from 7.25% at time of signing to 6.3%. Without the same growth a contract signed at 7.25% now is relatively more expensive than a contract at 7.25% then.

Yes, we are facing an anomaly. The drop in cap isn't necessarily caused due to deflation, but more the shortended season. The same was true in the 2013 season.

I am curious to see what happens and what the NHL will do. Some teams have already signed players to extensions before this happened, and if there is no solution, teams will go over the cap. Maybe they can go with a soft cap for 1 year, until things die down and go back to normal. Same as in Baseball

The entire off-season hinges on what happens with DeAngelo, at every turn. I really think they are going to resign now. Not sure how responsible it is long-term, but with the situation the team is , there would be more work, more guys moving, more headaches if they did trade him...

To me, there is less doubt than ever that they will resign Strome... I can’t remember what time this team has been so thin in the middle. Even when Christensen was #1. Barron is not the prospect that Stepan was... Need a 2C? Strome is a 2C... all things considered, if his demands are high (they won't be, NYR are the only reason he's still in the NHL), then trade him.

Re-sign Georgiev... no business trading a goalie... not since like the 90s or early 2000’s... unless it’s like a Raanta trade, where hindsight wins over foresight. Even more risky for a guy like Georgiev, who is already better then Johnson, Talbot, Raanta.

I also think there is considerable risk in building a bottom six entirely of guys under 25 and relatively inexperienced. They should probably get one UFA.

Smith is a saving grace, like it or not. And Staal is not getting bought out. Hank probably will... unless expansion, I have no idea how that works. Fast will be the odd man out, IMO.

Gorton probably will do some things out of left field though, not that that’s bad...

I would be more surprised if Larry had wrote something negative about Staal.

Maybe this is an elaborate plot to pump Staal's value enough to have some dummy team trade for him in the summer. But it's more likely that Larry actually believes Staal can still play.

More power to him I guess

1.) I believe DeAngelo gets resigned 5 years. Lessens the risk for NYR, lets Tony get another big contract while he's young. Risk/reward for both player & team. I don't see him as a risk personally. He is a dual threat as a driver of play and sneaky back door finisher. I feel, defensively, he fits the Dan Boyle mold, more so than the Mike Green/Keith Yandle mold. As far as timing of the signing, who knows. Both camps seem to be difficult to deal with so either they both drag it out squeezing blood from a stone, or out of respect for each others approach they come in with a well educated fair offer that is similar enough that they agree it just needs a tweek to get done.

2.) Georgiev. I just read the Athletics article about Benoit Allaire. It seems he is in love with Georgiev from day one and had some input into the Rangers scouting and signing him according to Bobrov's interview. Allaire felt at Georgiev's very first camp "He was the quickest and hardest working goalie I have seen" (not verbatim). Allaire is quietly the backbone to the NYR coaching staff. His opinion has a lot of pull. I believe all the trade talk and reason for not getting done was because NYR doesn't -want- to trade Georgiev, but if a team was foolish enough to overpay the business-is-business.

He may very well not be a lifer in blue, but I wouldn't be surprised if he isn't here another four or five years either depending on his performance curve plateauing or continuing upward.

I get that Larry didnt write that Staal is a living breathing skating pile of garbage, but he was pretty critical of Staal's continued ability. It certainly read to me as an assessment of someone who is still playing, someone who can at times provide something, but still someone who is only with the team because of his NMC.

I read that piece as well, I agree that Allaire has a very strong presence behind the scenes. It seemed obvious but the article confirms it

As for Georgiev, I feel like 4/5 years is a lot, just based on the situation. I'd wager he is here for another 2, 2 1/2 years max. At some point, it's probably going to be cost prohibitive to keep him, and he'll want his shot to be a starter somewhere.

You're right, it's probably a fair assessment.

I just chuckle that among all the players from this past group, Staal has somehow managed to survive the longest. And that includes Henrik who, if reading between the lines, is a near certainty to be bought out.

2021 will be worse.
If Hajek isn’t ready what choice do we have? I’m not for rushing any of the 21 and under prospects like we did with Lias and VK. Maybe Rykov but he had tough injury season last year so we shall see. I’m definitely more confident in B. Smith then I am in Staal for sure

Remember that Matteau-esque wrap around in the home opener? And how some people were saying "He's finally his old self again".

That lasted 2 days.

I am still amazed we live in a world where Marc Staal and Brent Seabrook were a healthy scratch in the same week
He was almost ok in '18-19, but crashed again. It's been like watching someone writhe around, dying slowly for like 7 years.

They've already been phasing him into a 7th guy. He wasn't hurt for many scratches this season.

Who plays for him?
I have Smith-Trouba Fox-Lindgren ADA-???
If I remember correctly Lindgren came for him when he was scratched and has been just terrific.
