Why can’t Strome re-sign and just play RW opposite Panarin? Most people’s complaints seem to stem from his defensive play and possibly his poor timing of penalties. The penalties can be worked on for sure. Playing wing mitigates the defensive play. Let him score 60 points playing with Panarin, it helps distribute depth throughout the lineup

I’ve actually held this opinion for a while but Quinn seems married to Strome at C since he’s a veteran, or something. If we could keep the Strome/Panarin connection (especially if they continue to connect) while also grooming Chytil as a full time C and getting him the confidence in his game that would likely come playing between that pairing? Personally I think Chytil has a naturally more well rounded game and with confidence and faith from his coach would end up taking not a step, but a leap, in that position. I’d be shocked if Quinn tried it.

Didn’t they try that and he wasn’t as good ?

Strome is getting resigned I just hope 2 yrs , think it’s gonna be 3 and everyone worries it’s gonna be longer

He should be exposed in expansion regardless

It hasn't happened because Chytil hasn't been ready for it. If he proved that he was ready to be a 2C, I have no doubt that is where he would have played. Just because he's a young, promising player doesn't mean you throw him into the top 6 and leave him there. He wasn't even good enough to make the team out of camp last year. When he's ready, the spot is his to take. Until then, Strome gives us another option.

More and more chatter about June Draft happening. Friedman said NHL really wants to do it and they've been paying attention to how much interest the NFL draft has been getting since it'll be the only thing going on. We would have the 14th and 23rd. Womp. Should have tanked in the wasted season.

Bill Daly: June NHL draft would likely use PTS % - TSN.ca

I’m all for the draft in June. All this talk about playoffs though and a draft before the playoffs, a play in, etc seems too erratic and not to mention a significant health risk. The whole idea of a playoff seems far fetched but i think an early draft works.

Barkov would be amazing but I don't see how you're getting him without trading something that hurts. And presumably that would be Zibanejad

Unless the Panthers are planning to blow it up and start over. But they just signed Bobrovsky for the next 50 years, can't imagine they're looking to rebuild

The quest to sign Barkov in two years is dead anyways. It died when they decided to commit to Kreider. And will die further when they inevitably commit to Strome

I don't see any iteration of a Barkov trade that wouldn't involve Zibanejad.

The only other "Centerpiece" that would even start the conversation value-wise while mitigating some cap would be DeAngelo, and he's far from a "need" on the currently composed Panthers squad.

Less? I wouldn't be surprised if he wants more than Kreider makes.
But he is not going to get that. Not with the Rangers and not on the open market. And again, his career was in the toilet. It has been resurrected and he finally has the trust of a coaching staff and an organization. And he has trust in them. Oh, and he gets to center one of the top players in the league. Is it really worth it to go UFA and start again?

Nylander played with Jagr for two years. In Y2 Jagr experienced a drop of 27 points from Y1. What happened?

In Y3, playing with Gomez/Drury/Dubinsky he experienced another drop of 25 points.

He was just getting older and 05-06 was a crazy season with tons of offense out of the lockout due to the rule changes. Perfectly understandable that his scoring would decrease.

In terms of 5v5 points only we're talking a drop of 16 points Y1 to Y2 and then another 15 points Y2 to Y3.

Unless he gets a long-term deal he’s going to UFA soon either way.

I do not believe so. He is only 26. If he signs a 2-4 year deal, he has several more years ahead of him of playing with Panarin and a way to enhance his UFA status.

I don’t see how a 3-4 year deal would be unsuitable for either side. Obviously the dollar amounts need to make sense but Strome has bounced around a bit and he had a couple of rough seasons in Edmonton. Hopefully he realizes the opportunity he had last season playing with a premier player doesn’t make his value $6-$7m. The team needs to point out that he has has his struggles but the team sees a role for him.

The issue can be rabbit-holed for as long as anyone wants to argue it, but no one can reasonably argue with the observation that Panarin has produced at a high level wherever he was and with whomever he played with.

In the NHL, Strome has been about a .5pts/GP player wherever he was and with whomever he played with. **except for the one season he's played with Panarin**

Is Strome better than other options? Absolutely. Has Panarin benefitted from having Strome as a regular partner? Maybe. Has Panarin "unlocked" this higher-producing Strome? Almost certainly, and the decision to re-sign Strome and at what amount have to reflect this. Has Strome "unlocked" this higher-producing Panarin? There is zero evidence to suggest that. We shouldn't feel married to Strome because of any suggestion that Panarin's production will tank without Strome. To suggest that is ridiculous.

Not a good idea to lock up money during the years that Zibanejad, Fox, Chytil, Kakko, Shesterkin, Lindgren, possibly DeAngelo, Buchnevich have their contracts run out and will need more expensive extensions if they are getting kept. Not saying it would be impossible to trade him at that point but you never know. He cannot reasonably be lost in expansion either.
