People get depressed---it can f*** them up. He didn't get off to a great start--with a schedule that had us playing one game a week the first three weeks of the season that might have helped mess things up for him too. He was skating as well in training camp as I'd ever seen him and then by the time he was sent to Hartford he was skating in mud again. You also got to work with what you have. I'm not a fan of the 'I'm playing with shit linemates--why can't I play on a better line' complaint. Doesn't matter whether you're playing with Panarin or playing with Fast or Lemieux---you might not get as many points but you got to make your minutes count and that's the best reason for you to move to a better line when the opportunity comes along.

I saw the thing with the pills. I know he was talking about sleeping pills but he apparently did have some kind of foot injury and it made me think of pain pills and there are players who have gotten addicted to them. Got to be careful with the pills and you need to talk to someone if you're depressed---that first step can be a hard one though. People need to realize that most people have periods of depression in their lives and a whole lot of people seriously think about suicide. Because you're down or having thoughts doesn't make you unique at all.

Anyway it sounds like the Rangers may be still open to Lias. All in all I think he's a good guy. That said I'm not sure he's going to be a guy who seriously makes it. Just on hockey ability I like Chytil a lot better.

Perhaps that's when his foot injury happened? And if it never got really treated, it just got worse over time?

As I've said before, I still believe Lias will be an NHL player, but I highly doubt it will be here. Think the team is going to cut bait within the next 6-12 months. If the team makes a sizeable move for a roster player, wouldn't be surprised to see Lias as part of the deal. Teams can talk themselves into players like Lias, it's just gonna depend on how much they like him.

It seems like he got injured at some point and hid it from the team for whatever reason. Or at least that's what it looks like to me based on what has been said

As for Staal and Smith, it doesn't make a ton of sense to me to take on salary that extends into next year just to move them. As much as it sucks, the most likely outcome based on the situation seems to be the team buying out Henrik and just biting the bullet on Smith and Staal for one more year.

Smith playing forward and D allows them to carry one less guy, and Staal the team clearly believes he still brings something to the table, so no point in moving him just for the sake of it.

The cap staying flat is going to have a butterfly effect for seasons to come, I hope Gorton can navigate it for the team's sake

They carried a 23 man roster pretty much this entire season anyway (before and during three goalies). I'm all for them carrying 21 or 22 guys but they don't want to do it. They just went shorter in October with the real spaced out schedule.

Whether or not they take advantage of carrying one less guy next year remains to be seen. They also had more cap space this year so it didn't matter.

With the cap being flat, and some big raises being handed out, having the option of potentially carrying one less guy I'm sure is something they're keeping in mind.

Not until they traded Namestnikov they didn't. They were pinching pennies to get DeAngelo in on the one year deal and there was talk about wanting to keep all the extra space because of potential bonuses and they didn't get that until the deal.

They had ~1.1M in cap space to start the year.

They dumped Vlad two games into the season and cap space wasn't an issue for the rest of the year Before that they were trying to maximize space yes, and they carried 22 guys for those two games

I'm confused what your point is

that while they should go to a 22 man roster they don’t want to do it and smith’s versatility isn’t really a factor in it.

Could have. It's tough--he's still a young guy. I didn't like what went on with him last year but I'm not going to have a huge problem if the Rangers decide to stick with him. Eventually I think he'll move on to another team but if he does kind of get things back together and becomes an NHL roster player we'll get a better return than just by moving him now. There are guys taken really early who become players but don't turn out all that great. I like Sam Bennett for one but he'll never be more than a 3rd liner. The Rangers have star power--Mika and Artemi and hopefully Kakko and Igor and Fox. We don't absolutely need Andersson to hit it big but it helps a lot nonetheless if he becomes a legit player.

I’m actually fairly bullish on keeping Lias and grooming him for 3C eventually. The kid had a mental health issue and seems to have taken care of it. The communication was poor when he left maybe because of some assumed stigma.

This wasn't a one time occurence. What kind of person throws a silver medal in the crowd... just very strange considering his perceived "character" and "leadership".

I think he is acknowledging his responsibility in how he handled things, which is a big first step but i'm not sure how we can say he has taken care of it. you won't know if he has grown and learned how to handle the situation until he is back in that situation.

One man's bullshit is another man's character trait.

The fact that he didnt conduct himself in a professional manner years later lead me to lean on character train than one off occurence.

I mean, you're more than welcome to draw that conclusion. I believe differently. But the medal stuff is some of the most overblown bs I've seen on this board, on HFBoards, and the internet as a whole. He tossed a medal over the glass to a fan, he did not yeet it at maximum possible velocity, aiming for murder. And yet the reaction (especially from Canadian fans in my experience) would lead you to believe he burned down an orphanage

If both Strome and Chytil return--Chytil will be the 3c. Filip is a better player and several months younger. He is also much bigger and stronger and easily a better skater. Filip's stick skills are easily as good if not better and his defensive play took a large step forward last year. The only thing Lias is arguably better than Filip right now is face-offs. Really if Lias gets a 3rd line job it's on the wing and even then a few things are going to have to break his way. I think Lias would have a shot at making the Rangers though I don't think it's a sure thing at all. If he does he's on the 4th line most likely and he's going to need to play much better defensively than he did last year.

He can wear a uniform, or street clothes

But we know option B will not happen if he’s not traded. He played nearly all the games this year other than when he was a hurt and like two healthy scratches and nothing will significantly change to start next year.

That interview doesn't read as a mental health issue to me. Poor time management, playing video games, bad sleep hygiene, unaccountability if not communicating health issues to team, maybe homesick. Just sounds like a kid to me. Like a kid who moved away for college and isnt adjusting well.

Sounds like a maturity issue….which of course we did know about him.

Lias was only drafted in 2017. Most regular players take 2-3 years to even start getting a cup of coffee. Chytil was an outlier. Kaako is a second overall pick which the Rangers have had twice in their entire existence. Fox was a 2016 pick....hey three years ago!

I've written at least a dozen posts but the NHL went bonkers as a result of the 2013 lockout with promoting kids who were not mature enough to handle being a pro. It's only gotten worse.

I still find it amusing that the prime mover for drafting Lias came from a lone retiring alumni. The Gortie basically said they weren't thinking about Lias at all at the number 7 position until one guy fought really hard for him and was retiring in a month. They felt bad for him and granted him a swan song. LOL. that's pretty gangsta I gotta admit. He persuades the Rangers' brass to pick Lias and then books it outa town like a bandit. hahaha. it sort of is funny, not gonna lie.
