Yes, that's the only logical answer, although I started a poll yesterday regarding this and the debate it sparked was interesting to say the least.

Trouba's a good player and he's not getting bought out. More likely it would be Henrik or Smith if Henrik retires. I think the Rangers think both Staal and Smith played pretty well last year despite what some here might think. I listened to Quinn's interview the other day. He spoke well of both but particularly of Staal. If we do buy out an LD though I think we probably sign a cheaper experienced LD to a one year deal to replace the guy leaving. Not sure Miller is ready. I think Lundkvist is somewhat closer but there's no way I think the Rangers are going to start his NHL career on the left side. I saw his interview too--when asked about playing LD--he looked like WHAT!?!!? I honestly don't know what's going to happen with the right side of our D. We have 4 guys who are really excellent but I'm doubtful any of them would make a good adjustment to the left side.

Hot take: Trouba might be the smartest option here long term.

Hank and Staal are short term issues. Trouba has to do a lot more to be worth that price tag. He’s the 3rd best RD we have, the oldest, and most expensive. He’s not a detriment, but I don’t think he’s an $8M dman. I’m sure the Rangers won’t even entertain this option, but I do think they should.

By the same token that the salary cap will be tight, there will also be a lot of good players forced to take bargain basement one year deals. The Rangers, if they’re smart, should be able to fill some spots nicely. I’m pretty sure free agents will be quite happy to play for this team.

Trouba is by far the worst buy out option because he definitely has significant trade value prior to his NTC kicking in if they want to go that way.

I was assuming a compliance buy out would be granted under the condition the cap gets screwed up and no teams really have cap space

Trouba isn't going anywhere. Depending on how you spin it the flat cap might actually help us cost control DeAngelo and Strome if we decide to give them longer term deals. They would have to know that for as long as the cap stays flat there would be less available money from us and other teams that might put an offer sheet down. After things returned to normal if those guys were signed for say 6 years then after year 3 we might have them in deals that are steals...just brainstorming.

One can only hope that ADA has better advisers than the last time he held out even though everyone knew there was no extra money.

Has to be Hank, sorry but we didn’t make the rules just have to make the rules work for us as best as possible. Believe it or not we’ll need Staal/Smith for at least the 1st half of the season (in a normal season) to evaluate the rooks and guys like Hajek/Rykov or to experiment with an ADA side switch if Lundkvist is undeniably ready. Maybe they’ll have some deadline value if the kids develop fast. Plus we could get more F depth or resign Fast if we buy out Hank. lock up ADA and sign Strome for 1-2 years. It’s actually a bunch of 1st world problems to have.

Even with a compliance buyout, I do not see how you can have a resigned Strome, resigned Buchnevich and a resigned DeAngelo.

Also, I cannot see any team paying Stall's salary. So now you would have to pick up a substantial portion of his salary and a 2nd or third round pick? Cannot see anyone doing that. Not to mention that they may not have a choice but to play Staal on the third pairing. MAYBE Hajek can step in.

And finally, If Strome is resigned and you have ZBad, if you are trading DeAngelo, you are trading him for a RW. So who are you looking at?

Staals salary, actual dollars is 4.2

Actually its 3.2 after 1mill bonus

That's manageable

I really don’t think it’s impossible for the team to trade Staal after his bonus is paid. There are forward versions of Staal that this team could use for a season. Make the money work between both clubs.

Smith I would hold on to as the 13/7. I’m still a little concerned about how young and inexperienced the projected bottom-6 is going to be. Howden, Lemieux, Gauthier, Andersson(maybe), Kaako(maybe), Kravtsov(maybe), Chytil(maybe), Digiuseppe(maybe). I think that if this team wants to compete they’re going to need to go find 1 or 2 vets who can fill important roles in the bottom-6. Fast would be perfect but I’m expecting him to make too much money.

Off season moves:
- sign Strome for 2 yrs at 5
- lock up ADA 4 yrs at 5.8
- compliance buy out Hank
- sign Lemmy 2 yrs at 1.5
- sign Georgie 2 yrs at 2
- sign DiGuiseppe at 800k
- sign vet LD for 1 yr like Hutton, Borowiecki, or Beaulieu

leaves about 4.5 mil in cap space

HTF: sign/resign: Lundkvist, Forgarty, Nieves, Geertsen, Jones, Pajuniemi, Fontaine, Barron, Wall, Raddysh, 1-2 AAAA guys
