Just like the Rangers wouldn't buy out Girardi, and wouldn't trade Zuccarello or McDonagh. If the last 4 years have taught me anything, it's to never rule anything out under Gorton
I don't think girardi, zucc, or Mac is anywhere near the status of hank

Im not advocating that it isn't a good idea I just don't know if they will do it, in my opinion they would buy out Staal before hank but I don't even know if they do that either

They are really in a tough position with Henke. The hope is that he probably chooses to retire after all this. Same probably goes for Staal. But that is a lot of money to walk away from.

when it comes to hank he could walk away from that money and still make that back by doing a movie haha

but seriously he is a legend in Sweden I doubt the money will just stop coming in all together, I also think the rangers would be willing to give him whatever he wants

I could see him walking away from 4.5M (less after NY taxes) and taking a job as an analyst in front of a camera or somewhere in the organization. The cap number is huge and 4.5M is still a lot to walk away from but if he’s replacing it with a 5 year 20M contract as a scout or video coach or something like that who knows. The problem is I don’t think he thinks he’s done. I think he wants to play, which means the buyout route and him being able to go somewhere he’ll get a workload is probably more “attractive”. I don’t think money will ever be THE issue regarding what happens to Hank. He’ll find work in the NHL, continue doing advertisements, restaurant business and probably get into men’s fashion as an entrepreneur. I think the issue is he still wants to play, and personally I don’t think he wants to play anywhere but NY.

If DeAngelo won't agree to a reasonable deal what about trading him for a forward (Maybe Kyle Clifford?) and then turning around and (if healthy) signing Byfuglien to a short term deal? It'll help slot Trouba back in where he's comfortable, give us a bomb of a shot on the backend, bring in a mean tough guy who can play and also get us another forward to help supplement the offense.

I don't think there's any way he can keep his 2020-21 bonus if he doesn't play the 2020-21 season.

the bonus gets paid on 7/1 regardless of the season. thats why the bonuses are buyout and lockout proof...he just would have to retire after the bonus is paid.

its not quite so rigid as that if he retires the team can surely say they are not paying and take it up with the lawyers

His salary is $5.5 for next season (yes, still a lot of money).
I think the bigger question for Hank is that he isnt done competing at a high level. He has to decide if he can wait for an opportunity like an injury to come back in and win for us, re-establish himself, or is it better to go to another team and do it there, or to just go back to Sweden for his twilight years. I really doubt he's going to retire just because were in a cap crunch.

too much tuff for one team

Kyle Clifford? Or Kyle Connor?

Because if it's the former, yikes

It feels different to me still. If there's a season to play and Lundqvist chooses not to play it, I can't see him being able to keep those dollars.

Signing bonus is paid out in July, he can retire after that

This situation has occurred in the NFL before and most of the time the players were forced to repay their signing bonuses. One example is Calvin Johnson so it is not only low profile guys that this has happened to. The Colts chose not to try and get Andrew Luck's signing bonus back but going on past history if they wanted to do so they likely would have succeeded.

what is this obsession with Kyle Clifford? he would need to be a throw in for any deal that includes ADA, I mean Clifford sucks

his career high is 21 points for gods sake.....hes a 4th liner at best, unless Clifford is coming with Marner I want no part of him AT ALLLLLLLL

I want no part of him period. He's got 22 more fights than career goals. Hard pass. We don't need goons, we need hockey players

Upside- he's a UFA making less than 1 mill, so assuming it isnt a joke that his name keeps getting mentioned, we dont have to trade ADA for him. Just sign him.

I will now accept nominations for Assistant GM.

Would ADA be enough for Clifford?

Have to think that Gorton is keeping as many options open when it comes Henke. I think its understood by now that he wouldn't want to play anywhere else. Perhaps he's waiting to see what develops with this current season and the draft and listens to offers on Georgiev. Teams may or may not have made Gorton an offer on Georgiev by the deadline but could now be after him especially once an official decision is made with regard to the season and upcoming draft.
Personally, I have no problem having Henke backing up Shesty. Push comes to shove and Gorton gets an offer for a 2nd rounder on draft day... I wouldn't have a problem with him pulling that trigger especially considering he doesn't have a 2nd in this draft.
