I don’t even know what “made [player] available” even means. That sounds like a synonym for “not doing your job.” If another teams calls and asks about him you’re going to say not interested too bad before even listening to what the other guy has to say?

my impression was that, along with another post saying that they weren't allowing teams to talk to Kreider about an extension, basically just meant that the Rangers weren't allowing teams to talk to Kreider about an extension unless they put a deal out there that the Rangers liked

e: if the Rangers really believe they could turn this around to be contenders in the next 2-3 years then keeping Kreider makes some kind of sense but that's taking a lot of balls to assume you're gonna be gunning for the cup in that time frame

What if the Rangers believe that starting next year, they should be a playoff team?

Because after next year, $20 million in cap space opens up, and if you’re only looking at $1.9-2.4 million raise for Kreider, you just need the extra space to navigate next year’s cap.

But the issue is not fitting in Kreider's 7M. It can easily be done longterm. It's if you actually think he's going to be an asset to the team making that much money in the last 3 or so years which I find very questionable.

And what if the Rangers believe that he will remain at that level for the next five years?

There's a lot to pull together here, but, @Edge has made it no secret that the Rangers, to put it kindly, would not be upset at all if Lundqvist announced his retirement. My guess is that if the Rangers and Kreider were close enough on a deal that they believed they could get something done before July 1, they wouldn't consider that they'd have to trade Kreider by Monday. @Edge has said it...Gorton has a lot of possibilities here.

There's little to no reason to believe that Lundqvist is even remotely considering retirement. His comments in May of last year seem to infer that he thinks he's going to get another contract, not necessarily with the Rangers, after next season. His performance this year, through inconsistent starts and the weird goalie situation, isn't sending a signal that he's washed up - if anything I bet it's putting more of chip on his shoulder. He's not going to "retire" like this. I don't think so.
