The amusing part of this thought experiment though is that despite how much prospect depth we have at D we legitimately don't have any right handed guys ready to step in on the third pairing in this scenario.

Keane isn't ready and Lundkvist is still in Sweden.

I'd be open to the idea of Smith as the 3RD, but no way Quinn goes for that. Staal on the right? Mild nausea.
It is funny to think about. Staal can't skate properly on his own side, wouldn't be able to watch his shifts if he was on his off side.

The DeAngelo-Fox pairing may be putting the cart before the horse right now, with no ready replacement for 3RD, but before we sign DeAngelo long term it's probably best to make sure he's able to play the left side for when Lundkvist/Keane is ready.

Bennett crushed it in Kingston. He's buried on the Flames depth chart on the Left side. Playing 4th line with Jankowski. Tkachuk and Gaudreau are in the top 6. Even Lucic is ahead of him currently. He can play RW and even C, but that's not how they are using him. He's not even getting PP time either which Lucic is on the #2 PP. 23 yr old, two years to RFA. Change of scenery would be interesting. I like him.

Flames went off the board to draft Jankowski in the first round in his draft year. Maybe 2016? Currently, Jankowski's centering the 4th line. He's only 25 and has one more year to go until he's RFA. Scored 17 goals 2 seasons ago for the Flames. Got 4 in one game. He's a Big boy, 6'4 212 but doesn't play it physical.

Interesting prospects.

Sam Bennett available. He’d be a solid get, Lias+ for Bennett makes sense considering Calgary was interested in Lias

Lemieux-Howden-X
X-Bennett-Fast

Would be a great foundation for a bottom 6. Still think we should go after Alex Tuch for that 3RW spot
As much as I'd like Bennett as a project, I don't think Lias + gets him. I think Lias may have even less value in a trade than Haley right now after he openly said in an intervew that he "doesn't need the NHL in the immediate future".

I think the best hope for Lias right now is that he recovers fully from his injuries, gets in a better place mentally, and works his way back to the NYR organization. They should do their best to make amends and if Lias eventually works his way into NYR plans down road great, and if he doesn't he atleast got to a spot where he's ready and able to play in the NHL elsewhere and has a non-zero trade value

Exactly
People use a players usage to justify bad performance, but the players are there because they're supposedly good at carrying that load. I'm not going to just assume Trouba would put up DeAngelo-like numbers if he had his usage, that's a similar argument to people who think a 3rd liner putting up crazy P/60 means they'll put that up over a larger sample size of top 6 mins. There are defensemen who get very challenging deployment yet excel, Trouba isn't one of them. There are guys who are great defensively, physical, and great PK'ers that you can find for far under 8 mill per season
Like who?

Trouba = Mittelstadt confirmed
Just imagine Andersson, Mittelstadt AND Chytil all in the NYR organization. You think bloggers on Twitter we arguing earlier about ice time of Strome/Chytil Andersson/Howden... just wait till they have vietnam flashbacks of the 2017 Draft and start World War 3 over who gets the ice time between Andersson Chytil and Mittelstadt:popcorn:

Well let's get those guys!

That kind of sums up my take,

I don't really like the Trouba contract. If those players are available, were at the age the Rangers could maybe move forward with, then I think it would make a lot of sense to trade Trouba one way or another, even if it took a several step process for something like that.

Yet I have not seen any real avenue towards getting those players.

Does not mean in anyway I expect the Rangers to trade Trouba, yet I do think that contract may in the future represent one of those the Rangers would rather not have.
