The biggest thing he would have to ask himself, what if he did not get an offer sheet?
Then he still has a short window to file for arbitration. Teams will know he has that short window, so if he doesn't get an offer sheet right away, he knows one isn't likely to come.

Just came from a Henrik q&a in NJ..

interestingly a young kid asked the awkward question of whether hank will “spend his whole career as a ranger or go somewhere else to try to win a Stanley cup.” I found Henrik’s answer interesting in that he didn’t declare “this is where I want to be I want to see this through” etc, but instead talked about how it’s been tough for 2 years and things are on the upswing, but that they have 3 goalies and it’s a weird situation that “nobody knows how it will play out.”

take it for what you will, and I’m in the camp that he’s going nowhere, but I found his answer interesting.

It is what it is. If it means Hank not starting for 3 weeks so be it.

I mentioned this after the second Islander game—Vally said on the post game show that he thought it would be Shesterkin and then back to Geo. He’s been right the last few weeks predicting whom would be starting the next game. I can see Hank taking a hard look in the mirror if he wants to stay and play once or twice every 3 weeks or possible to dealt to a contender. Hank wearing a baseball cap does nothing for him or the Rangers. We all know he wanted to play his whole career in NY but things have changed. I also think which no one has really mentioned in his career win total does he get in the top 3 only playing a few more games this year and next. Maybe that’s not his first priority but something tells me it’s a big deal to him.

All the love for Hank but the time in his career has come for the biggest decision of his of NHL career.

As far as value I’m not sure what the Rangers can get even picking up 1/2 his salary.

I’d be pretty happy with Kapanen for Georgie ngl. I don’t think Kap’s a legit top-6er but he’s a valuable middle six type with an edge. A line with Lemieux and Kapanen on it would be quite mischievous.
I dunno, seems like he has real 2nd line potential to me. He's only in his second full NHL season and is on pace for just under 50 points for the season. Along with the slight edge he plays I would definitely be thrilled to acquire him in a trade. Added bonus he can speak with Kakko in Finnish :dunno:

They didn't.

The Rangers and Leafs appear to be negotiating through the media. Mirtle says the Leafs wouldn't give up Kapanen, Johnsson, or Kerfoot for Georgiev. Dreger says even Kapanen alone wouldn't do it for the Rangers. The person you talked to probably misheard the Dreger report.

Thanks, I didn't see or read anything online, just had a conversation with someone who mentioned Kapanen and Geo. Appreciate the clarification.

Yes and no.
We traded Vanbiesbrouck to Vancouver for “future considerations” knowing that we would lose him in the expansion draft for nothing. We were ineligible to collect the compensatory pick, but vancouver was not, so it was our way to get something instead of nothing. Lidster (himself exposed in the draft, but not claimed) was dealt to us to complete the deal, and he played 34 games with us before we traded him away. We didn’t lose Beezer for nothing, but we did trade him for future considerations, which back then meant next to nothing. We were not able to shop him for his actual value, which was my point.
Lidster also scored two goals in the Stanley Cup Finals.

Greg Gilbert had more points than Lidster in our Cup run but we put him on waivers the following season. *the point was* that we hung on to two great goalies and then lost one for far, far below value. We got someone another team waived in exchange for one of the best goalies in the league.

The player must sign the offer sheet first. And yes, the team could easily match the deal and then trade him elsewhere. I’m not overly concerned with an offer sheet.
I think another team offer sheeting Georgiev is a possibility, but I think the real argument for trading Georgiev is that we have Hank, Shesty and Huska but no great 2nd/3rd/4th line depth and no real plan for players coming up to fill it anytime soon.

Not gonna say I watch Kapanen 82 games a year but catch about 10-15 Leafs games a year and I think he's a very good 2nd/3rd liner if he fits your team well. I just wouldn't forgive JG if Georgiev helps the Leafs go far in the playoffs lol

Think Detroit would have a problem doing this? Yzerman is cutthroat and he needs a goaltender. San Jose?
I mean, I purposefully was pointing out Ottawa lol

and yes, I do still think those teams would be hesitant. Even then, nothing is stopping the Rangers from matching and then moving him. Or simply moving him the offseason before that happens. I think if you operate a team under the worry of an offersheet then you are doing it completely wrong. There is a reason that they are so very very rare.

That is the kind of line that wins you a playoff series. It would be such a gigantic PITA to play against.

I mentioned this the other day, but it seems people are just brushing it under the rug:

How on Earth do you guys think this plays beyond this season, maybe next, without becoming a major point of divisiveness in the clubhouse and throughout the org?

These guys are both entering their mid-twenties, have both served their apprenticeships, and will both (rightly) want to be the man, the starter, the star – and to be put in the corresponding position to get paid. Give 'em both 40 games a year, depress their numbers (thus consequently depressing their salaries), and neither will be happy.

Never mind the fact that having a starting-caliber goalie cooling his heels on the bench every game (when you could instead leverage him for help elsewhere that would actually be able to contribute on the ice) is a horribad waste of an asset.
Good point. I think the goalie thing is quite a delicate and volatile issue year to year. In my estimation the best way is you have a 1 and solid backup. The two-starters thing is great for a year or two but definitely has a shelf life. Safe is to have a starter and just keep the pipeline stocked. Cheaper that way, keeps roles clear. If your pipeline is dry, a vet backup is fine. Also, have a great goalie coach.

I learnt my lesson years ago. I’m not in the trade Lundqvist corner. The man needs to retire a Ranger. He bleeds blue. Many moons ago I was pushing for a Brian Leetch trade. We’d get some picks and kids back I said to myself. He’s almost over the hill anyway I said. Watching Leetch skate in two different uniforms was downright criminal and heartbreaking to say the least.

Let Hank go if that’s what he truly wants. Let him retire a Ranger if he wants that. He’s earned it.

Oh. And that big return we got.
Jarkko Immonen
Maxim Kondratiev
2004 1st round pick (#24-Kris Chucko)
2005 2nd round pick (#40-Michael Sauer)

A complete joke.

Actually, the Rangers traded up for Lauri Korpikoski with the 1st they got from the deal. I blame Maloney for that draft.
