Serious question, what is so great about Athanasiou? 19 points in 36 games this year. He’s mainly a 40 point forward with speed. His next contract will more than likely be pretty expensive for what he brings as well. When you start factoring these things in, his overall value isn’t that high.

I can't say I've really watched him outside of Ranger games, but looking at his stats, it's seems like he is someone who will shoot the puck. 647 SOG in 284 games. Compare that to Buchnevich, who has 394 in 225 games or Strome (846 in 467).

He had 216 shots on goal last year in 76 games. That's nearly 3 per game. His shooting percentage was 13.9% and he scored 30 goals. This year, he has 88 shots in 36 games, but his shooting percentage is only 5.7%.

Detroit is the lowest scoring team in the league this year, by far, at 2.15 goals per game, so that is also affecting his numbers.

He's currently on injured reserve. No idea what the injury is or how long he will be out. He is a pending RFA having a bad year, statically. He's currently making 3 mil. It might be possible to lock him up for a while at a good number.

A guy with blazing speed that likes to shoot, who put up 30 goals just a year ago and is only 25, seems like a gamble worth taking. Depending on the price, of course.

I think there's probably more appeal for Toronto in splitting cap allocation than Leafs fans want to admit. If they see Skjei as a #3 and Georgiev as a 1B who can take over for Andersson after next season that's pretty good value as a base. Then consider that you're paying Skjei and Georgie with an extension combined what Nylander makes now, then it certainly adds additional value to a team staring down a cap crunch. Factor in the $7-8M saved from having to give Andersson a new deal and suddenly making a big offer to Pietrangelo this summer doesn't seem so bad long-term.

I guess this is my thing... if he's a gamble worth taking for us, why would a team in a similar situation be looking to move that player out the door?

What about nylander straight up for deangelo. Same age probably same type of contract but a deal that would help both teams deficits

I think his idea is that other teams are worried about the expansion draft, rather than the Rangers. They don't want to give up a lot for someone that would cause a difficult choice at the expansion draft.

That being said, I think the premise is still flawed. If you look at many of the teams rumored to be interested in a goalie and they don't have anyone else they'd absolutely have to protect (i.e. Andersen is a UFA after the expansion draft anyway).
Fair enough, my post came off snippier than I wanted it to, my bad

We know that Detroit liked Lias at the draft, and if they really are intent on moving AA then getting a recent top 10 pick plus a hobey baker candidate goalie ain’t bad at all

Liking a player at the draft and targeting him when he's not even playing hockey because he left his team are two vastly different things. There's no way Andersson has value like you would normally associate with "recent top-1o pick."

Wall isn't really a Hobey Baker candidate yet. As it was put in the prospect thread, we're still in the "everyone is a candidate!!" phase of that process. Even if he was, I don't think it'd change much of the lack of trade value he'd have.

I don't know that they would, but maybe AA isn't interested in staying there long term. Maybe they don't see him as part of the core, but rather as a trade chip that can net them valuable futures for the rebuild.

Usually you see that argument being made about guys a couple of years later in their 20s, or older. Kevin Hayes, for example, being 27 and not part of the Rangers long-term plan. Then again, Athanasiou does turn 26 in August, so maybe it's not as different as I'm thinking.

My question with AA is that is he a center or a winger? If he's a winger, he'd open doors to moving out Kreider. He doesn't have the power game, but man can he move and shoot the puck. He'd work well with Zibanejad.

As for Detroit, they're really rebuilding their team and are multiple years away. Is AA worth keeping and giving term to? We're significantly closer in our build. Yes he's 25, but the Wings aren't going to be anything for at least 2-3 years. They don't have the lure to get a player like Panarin. They'll need to draft and develop until they can remotely look at signing a top end player.

Also, they'd be getting a young center that needs a new place and they could give lots of time to, even at the NHL level.

Sometimes a single card doesn’t work the best with the rest of your hand; he isn’t a core player and they don’t want to pay him a moderate salary - but he looks like a good stop gap with clearly potential for more in the right situation

Usually, but there was talk of us trading Buchnevich at the draft, so you never know.
