if you buyout or trade Shattenkirk, a right side of Trouba-Fox-DeAngelo is pretty darn threadbare. Yes Smith is out there somewhere, but then what? There's no RD in HFD who's ready. No one accounts for injuries. If you sign some rando vet you're in effect paying him his salary + 3M or whatever you've bought Shattenkirk for. Just picking a random crappy name, would you rather have Deryk Engelland at functionally 4.8M or Shattenkirk at 6.65?

it's why I think Fox starts and plays a lot of the year in HFD

Carp was pretty adamant and sarcastic in saying he doesn’t think fox sees much if any time in Hartford. I think carp talks to graves and drury a lot.

Brooks slotted Fox in above ADA, but consider the source...

I mean, untold numbers of people slot in "new guy du jour" on the 2nd pairing when making offseason line combos. Never forget the heady days of Thomas Pock and Alexei Bereglazov, 2nd pairing defensemen

Also, our D7 Claesson can pitch in at RD. We could still sign Gilmour. There are other depth options than just Engelland or Shattenkirk.

The larger point is if you retain or buy out Shattenkirk, you're functionally trading him for whatever depth option you go with PLUS the $3M or whatever you're not paying Shattenkirk. What depth option at 4.0, 5.25, 6.5M effective has the upside of Shattenkirk at 6.65? Probably not many, if any.

I really hope they hold off on buy-outs, send Smith to Hartford, can call him up if you need him at any point, no one is claiming him.

Would rotate Shattenkirk in an out, when a kid has a bad stretch, needs a breather, injury etc...

After bonuses July 1 of next year, Smith is owed 2,350 real dollars and Shatty is owed 2 million in real money. Maybe you convince someone that needs to get to the floor to take Shatty at 50% next summer after the signing bonus is paid by us where the team would only owe him a million bucks.

people are really pluggin Fox in to that 2RD spot already? I got news for you guys Shattenkirk is probably a better player than Fox at this point. Fox will need some seasoning in Hartford still. Hang on to Shattenkirk. I'd be more interesting in trying to offload or buy out Smith than getting rid of Shatty.

Skjei Trouba
Hajek/Rykov Shattenkirk
Staal DeAngelo
Claesson

Is the most likely D to start the season imo
Whoever doesn't win the training camp battle for that LD spot will be in Hartford

Kreider Zib Kakko
Panarin Strome Kravstov
Andersson Howden Chytil
Lemieux Nieves Fast

Where’s Buchnevich?

Kreider Zibanejad Buchnevich
Panarin Chytil Kravstov
Kakko Howden Strome
Lemieux Andersson Fast

Namestnikov traded for cap space.

Traded; decent shot either he or Kreider gets moved, along with some of Names/Strome/Vesey

Brooks is proposing Lundqvist to the Sharks. SJ has one huge weakness in net.

Understand: The Rangers are not attempting to nudge Lundqvist aside. This is not a message being sent from Manhattan to Gothenburg, Sweden, by way of The Post. Management is not about to ask the face of the franchise to waive his no-move clause. Lundqvist has made it clear that he wants to lead the Blueshirts back to the playoffs. There is no wobbling on those fronts from either the front office or the goaltender.

But what if a serious Cup contender were to come after him? What if Wilson were permitted to make a pitch? Lundqvist’s sister lives in the Bay Area. And, of course, his good friend Karlsson would be on hand to help with the transition. And he’d be playing behind a defense that, for the first time since 2011-12, would help shield him.

Again, this is an exercise in hypotheticals. The Rangers are not pushing this. So far, neither are the Sharks. Even if Wilson inquires, Lundqvist might very well decline.

Still, I wonder.

Does Brooks know something? He knows Lundqvist very well.

Claesson should play more minutes than Hajek or Rykov, and hopefully we trade Shattenkirk.

One of Rykov/Hajek/Lindgren likely gets traded soon or what is the plan to get them all playing for the Rangers?

I have no idea whether the Rangers intend to get rid of Shattenkirk or not but Fox will have a good shot at making the team right out of camp. I think some people are forgetting a lot about his background including two straight years playing on top pair for USA WJC--there aren't very many players who have done that and he's at least somewhat comparable as a player to Cale Makar. Does anyone think Makar's going to need some AHL seasoning next year? Maybe---but I'd be a bit surprised. Anyway the Rangers traded a lot for Fox because he is one of the best prospect D out there.

As for Shattenkirk--there's really no way around the fact that his first two years here have been disappointing. He is making a lot of money and he's underperformed his contract. It wouldn't surprise me if the Rangers did try to move on from him. And the same with Smith and Claesson.

Anyway the addition to the right side of Trouba is massive. He is one guy who can crunch minutes and play in all situations. Shattenkirk may be a veteran presence but he's not really an all situations defenseman.
