I am going to be surprised if Smith can't move out for 2 million/50%
I think you need to be prepared to be surprised. He was pushed out of the starting D role on last year's version of the Rangers defense. That is really saying something. Teams are not lining up for two more years of that, even with 50% retention. And it makes no sense to buy him out.

Like I said, the best option the Rangers may have is to have him be the 12th forward on the 4th line, protector/7th defenseman. I could stomach that.

Unless you can get Tampa to take way less than four firsts for him.

I would think maybe two firsts, including next year's, if it's top 5 protected, I might be willing to do. You can do that in the NHL, right?

The problem is that does nothing for Tampa right now. They'd be losing one of their best players and replacing him with nothing. Maybe they could sign a good UFA with the cap space, but that would be limited by the very same cap issues that are making it difficult to sign Point. I would think any deal for Point would have to involve Zib+ going the other way.

with the Perry buyout which is hideous on the cap by the way I am worried the Rangers may do the same to Shattenkirk.........they clearly want to see who they get. Trouba adds like 7-8 million and they may do 11 million on Panarin

so moving a Kreider, Namestnikov almost has to happen. Vesey doesnt make that much.

I see the Rangers eating 50% or less of Shattenkirk's salary and trading him. He's still a useful option on some other team's PP. I'm sure other teams would have interest if he has salary retention. The Rangers can trade at somewhat of a discount now that they got a great deal for Trouba. Personally, I'd try to get at least a 2020 2nd round pick back so they can potentially offer sheet a player below the 10M+ threshold this year (I believe the compensation to give up is a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, but not 100% on this).

I would love Corey Perry on a cheap 1 year deal. Him and Lemieux would be a blast to watch together. At worst he will be a decent 4 liner, and at best he regains his scoring touch and we get 20 goals out of him. Win win

Again, the rumor 'round town was that he was untraceable even at 50%.

It is also worth to note, that it's not so much the retention, it's the term. Two years of him with his NTC does not appeal to anyone. Even at 50% retention (which still would have the other team on the hook for $3m, btw.

They are NOT "offer-sheeting" anyone. Gorton did not accumulate assets just to start throwing them away. No one is being "offer-sheeted".

According to Edge, Shattenkirk has been offered around with 50% retention and no one has been interested. That could change as other options come off the market, but if it does happen, don't expect to get a 2nd round pick. And for an offer sheet, we can't use any 2nd round pick. It has to be OUR pick, and that pick is currently tied up in the Adam Fox trade conditions.

Can someone post what you project our lineup to be on opening night 2019?
Gonna go crazy (not too crazy, I think this is a conservative projection)

Vanek (or another generic top 6-or-bust UFA on a short commitment) Zibanejad Kakko
Buchnevich Strome Puljujarvi
Namestnikov Andersson Kravtsov
Lemieux Filppula (or another decent veteran 4C) Fast
Smith (Chytil, Howden start in HFD)

Skjei Trouba
Staal DeAngelo
Holden (or another cap dump veteran D) Shattenkirk
Claesson (Fox starts in HFD)

Lundqvist
Georgiev

Important to remember that our forward group without Kreider and even Vesey is...not good! Not good at all, really

Want some vet leadership? Corey Perry on a one year deal, traded to a contender at the deadline. Perry gets a contract plus he gets to see where teams stand at the deadline and who might have the best chance of winning, Rangers could potentially offer him more on a contract than other teams because of cap space. Rangers get vet leadership from a guy who has scored a lot of goals and won before and then can recoup some free assets for him at the deadline. Win-Win.

I am pretty sure the worst case scenario is he continues to have knee injuries and barely plays or plays and can't keep up.

I’d be shocked to see 2 guys who spent all season in the NHL in Hartford next season

Something to consider, many of the UFA’s are going to be looking for trade protection on 3+ year deals to avoid being available for the expansion draft. Neither Shattenkirk or Smith will require protection as their contracts run out that year. Vancouver is shying a way from Edler as he wants 3 years and trade protection. There will be other teams like that.

Ottawa may need cap in order to reach the floor. They also have pretty much no veteran defensemen.

The market may not be hot right now, but I firmly believe both Smith and Shattenkirk are moveable. The nuance is what they return in terms of what they need to take back and/or what they get back.
