As much as I don’t love the idea of signing Panarin, I’m really impressed with everything Gorton’s done so far, so I’m more willing to have faith in whatever way he’s deciding to go right now

Totally agree. He's shown a willingness to make big moves and is holding to a reasonable price on them. Can't ask for anything more than that. I still don't love the idea of Panarin even with Trouba in the fold, but if that's what ends up happening then I trust that it was the best option available to them and they're confident in what they're getting. It won't be about the headlines but about the best possible fit.

Agreed. Bishop carried that team on his shoulders after Christmas, the locker room was a mess till Zuccs showed up. Going by his and Dallas players twitter feeds, the locker room gel'ed after Zuccy arrived. The guy is glue. Walking good aura. His soul is thousands of Kalpa's of enlightened Bodhisattvas.

Was living in Dallas at the time of the trade. Even stayed at the same hotel that the Stars use for game day naps. Met a bunch of them...

Zucc gave them secondary scoring and matchup advantages. They love the guy... Turned Hintz into a top 6 threat with their chemistry.

The stars are another defenseman and a scoring threat away from making noise.

Contrary to the executive outburst, they are a very well run organization that does a ton for their community and players.

GMs are leaving for Vancouver tomorrow for the most part. Maybe a few trades get done between now and the early evening tomorrow when they're still in their offices.

I just got off the phone and I was told, quite definitively, that the Rangers would be selecting players in the NHL Entry Draft on both Friday AND Saturday this weekend.
I know you meant this to be obvious, but the Rangers currently only have one pick scheduled for Friday, and you used the word players (plural), so this is actually big news. Thank you for sharing.

Dallas & STL were the 2 teams I rooted for in the Playoffs, just because of each team's turn-around. Both were good stories.

If the rangers want panarin then they need to trade krieder and a small add to move into the top 12. Then we have the cap space to get panarin. Although I dont agree that we should go for him. I know some of you want to buy out Staal, shatty, Smith but that would be majorly short sighted. Let steals contract run out.. trade shatty next year with 50% retained and Smith just bury till his contract is up. That will free up 14m in cap in 2 years then another 8.5 for lundquist the year after

Trying to parse my way through this. Lundqvist, Shattenkirk, Staal, Smith--all have contracts that run through the 20-21 season. So your idea is to keep three overpaid veteran defensemen on our roster all through this year and maybe through next or most of next no matter if they're blocking better, younger players? In the case of Smith maybe burying him in Hartford but his cap hit for the much greater part won't be buried--maybe 925K of it. So instead of buying him out--we put him in Hartford and take a $3.4 mil or so cap hit this year and next.

I suspect the Rangers are hanging on to Staal this year. If an opportunity comes along to move Shattenkirk whether it's this year or next year--best to do it--we might not get another chance. I'm not sure Smith is in the top 6/7 organizationally of our left side defensemen. His inclusion on the roster absolutely is going to block a player. I'd buy him out.

Anyway you don't really explain why dumping these three guys is shortsighted.

Am I wrong, or can we only carry 2 buy-out contracts according to the CBA?

We have Girardi till 2022/23.

I don't see how buying out multiple roster players is an option. Ex...Staal + Smith + Shattenkirk

Seems Smith is the keeper and make a hard choice between the other 2.

Yeah I hung out with Ott and Berube last year. Berube treated me like a nobody, but Ott and I had great chat. Bought those guys a round.

Berube is exactly what you expect, same with Ott. Lots of chirps

"Gorton said his hope is there are more moves coming to accelerate the Rangers' rebuild enough to where they can become a playoff contender next season. They have missed the playoffs the past two seasons and finished 20 points out of a postseason spot this season.

"It just felt like this is a player that is going to be with us for a while," Gorton said. "That's the biggest reason why we felt comfortable moving off No. 2

Interesting - especially those thinking they're in on Panarin.

Those players that you say will take their spots... we have no idea if lr when they will be ready. When they are that's when you make the trades. Shatty is tradeable and I'm talking at the tdl this year 50% retained we can get a little something back. Smith can be buried or sit in the press box.. buying out Smith hits us with around 2 million a year for the next 4 years on top of what we are paying Girardi. Instead of 4 more years of paying him just let him sit in the press box for 2. Yeah it doesn't give us the extra 2 million in cap flexibility now but we domt need it either. In 2 years down the road we will need every dollar to sign our own players and get free agents when we are ready to compete. That's what I mean by short sighted.

I bet Kreider would go to Phoenix for a year. Plays with step, income tax free state. Don’t think he extends there though. Arizona is the only spot kessel is rumored to waive for.
Arizona is not income tax free although 4.5% max probably feels like free to those of you back east.

Coyotes were quietly offering a Stepan around theleague a while back but ownership change may have slowed that down.

Arizona certainly makes sense though for many reasons.

One of the biggest differences between Trouba and Kreider is that Kreider is signed for next year at a reasonable rate. He could also be flipped at the deadline if no contract deal was likely.

What I mean is that we have no idea if these young players are ready yet and instead of rushing them and hurting their development you put them in a place to succeed. We can hold on to shatty till the deadline and retain 50% on him if we need to free up a spot which will be fox. Then we can sit Smith in the press box for those two seasons. I'd rather only have to pay him for two instead of 4 more years at 2m each season. That onto of Girardi is to much to pay for another 3 to 4 years in my book. Let him sit and wait for his contract to run out, he isnt blocking a spot if he isnt playing. Plus when we will be ready to compete for the cup every season I think will be after those deals run out and instead of having 6m or so tied up in dead cap space we will need that money for our own players or other free agents to put us over the top.

That's what i mean by short sighted
