It has probably been said already but my take is that things are very fluid. With regard to Shattenkirk and Staal and Smith I don't think Gorton is dead-set on buyouts for any of them. He'll do that only if they need cap space. If they reel in Panarin, for example and can't trade, say, Shattenkirk, they could make some room buying out Smith. Or vice versa. But if they don't add significant cap hits they would just keep those guys.
I'm quite happy with Smith as the swingman. They could even save a roster spot by having him be the 13th fwd and the 7th defenseman.
Very interesting times with this team. Kampai!

I wouldn’t be looking at trading Buch just for a draft pick unless it’s somehow top 10 and the rangers have a guy there they super like such as a Zegras or something.

Trading just to trade for a pick doesn’t make sense to me.

So why don't we want him then? Sell high opportunity?

I think it's probably just as simple as he may be the player they have to give up in order to get what they want more. They've been rumored to be very eager to get a top center in this draft and it might take Buch to make that happen. Doesn't mean that they dislike him, just that they like the other player more.

I really hope we don't do any buyouts unless it's absolutely imperative. That would be so short-sighted. These guys do not have long contracts. Let them expire or maybe a team will come calling when there's less term and we can retain (especially around playoff time). Shatty and Smith are not useless players and their terms are not bad. They both are capable of having bounce back years. Buying them out would extend their implications far too long.

We are already stuck with Girardi for another 4 years. We also have Spooner on the books this year. We are not going to win a cup this year and there's absolutely no reason we should be hampering ourselves down the line for short-term fits.

are we willing (or able?) to go full firesale on the remainder of the roster that is not long term? I'm thinking at worst we drop Strome, Namestnikov, and Vesey; and if we're ballsy we can move on to Kreider, Fast, or even Buch.

It leaves us with Andersson Chytil Howden Zibanejad Kakko Lemieux at absolute worst, maybe Smith at forward. IDK how I feel about that even though we can get a real haul.

I feel this is like my 30th time saying this since the trade but again there's no certainty that Fox is NHL ready immediately this fall.

I think the conditional pick attached to the trade indicates at least to some degree that if Fox doesn't appear immediately ready that NYR will happily wait a season (Or until the deadline) to bring him to the NHL.

I'm sure Adam wouldn't be thrilled but you can't exactly go around making special deals for every player.

It isn’t certain, but its very possible. We are severely underrating Adam Fox on these boards because he is being overshadowed by much more exciting things like Trouba and Kakko. Before we got Trouba certain people in the hockey community believed Fox would be our future 1RD. Seriously, lets some acting like Fox is a right handed Ryan Lindgren.

What UFAs do we like besides Panarin?

Without any idea of cost, at face value i'd at least inquire on Donskoi, B. Boyle, Ferland, Maroon, Kruger, C. Wilson. Some of them can be helpful beyond being stopgaps. I particularly like Donskoi and Ferland.

Jones had a bad year, but he had 3 good years before that. If I'm SJ, I'm banking on him rebounding.

I mean, the latter part is definitely possible. But Jones has always been mediocre despite the fact that he is consistently on very good teams. He's just not that good of a goaltender.

Jones has arguably the two best D-Men on the planet, as well as Vlasic.

Lundqvist's stats aren't great, but he has been on god awful teams the past two years, and before that was stuck with AV and consistently facing the highest quality shots of any goaltender on a nightly basis.

Lundqvist is significantly better than Jones. I don't see any trade happening because of the cap issues with SJ, but it certainly makes sense from a situational standpoint.

Which is fine, but even if we accept he's a 'blue chipper' it's still entirely possible that Fox will follow the McDonagh trajectory rather than the McAvoy one out of the NCAA

Fair point, but that's no reason to keep Shattenkirk if you can move him now. If there's a taker out there, you move him, and keep Claesson/Smith/cheap UFA vet as insulation.

Behind Vesey?

Behind Kreider.

If Kreider goes, I think the odds of Buch staying put go up significantly. So they are kind of tied together.

Vesey is kind of his own entity. I think he goes no matter what, but the Rangers would prefer to have a resolution to the Kreider situation first. I think Kreider is the higher priority.

I very much doubt the Rangers would have any interest in Ryan Merkley from the Sharks.
That's the problem with a trade there, it makes sense from a Henrik perspective, and I understand that his value is not that high for a number of reasons, but I don't want to trade him just to trade him. It's gotta make sense for the Rangers.

The whole aspect of liking certain guys at the top of the first is ever-present, but talks certainly aren't narrowly focused on only that.

There's definitely an interest in Nylander, and he'll be a player whose situation the Rangers monitor closely.

With Buch, I know he's come up in various check-ins with Edmonton and Buffalo. However, I don't know how far any of those conversations went, nor do I do know who initiated them.

Nylander is a really interesting one. Mentioned it a while back but he's a guy you can try at center for a bit behind Zib and if it doesn't work out hes actually a great fit as Zib's RW. The Rangers love versatile players.

Rangers pick up Miller from Vegas in a cap deal and flip him to Toronto in a package for Nylander?

For what Vesey provides, his spot can be replaced by a kid on an ELC. They can move him for a pick and try to replace him with one of the many UFA forwards that will be available for cheap in late July or August.

Say they move Vesey for a 3rd. They can then add someone like Daniel Carr, who at worst will be an all star for Hartford. I think it breaks out as an easy win from a value perspective, plus it saves them ~$1M that they can use to pay another significant vet for HFD.

I think Vesey goes. 50/50 on Kreider. Buch will stay unless he is a main piece for something like Nylander. Which is doubtful. Think we will swallow at least one bad contract for some more assets from a cap strapped team

All of this sounds logical at this point.

With the wingers on the market this off-season AND the young wingers both developing and joining the organization (Kakko), I'd be okay with Gorton trading both Buchnevich and Kreider.
