I wouldnt if I'm the Avs or Rangers, but Seattle absolutely should throw that kind of contract at him. They look like they could make the playoffs with some of the options they have.

Rooney is also a very effective player in his role. I want to like Gauthier but he really is all unpanned out potential at this point. Quinn hated his guts for some reason, but I dont know how likely it is for him to turn things around now. I really doubt Blackwell ever repeats this season and I really dont want to see him getting PP time over Laf or Kakko ever again.

Really surprised Rooney got protected... we could easily sign a new Rooney in free agency, it wouldn't cost that much. Blackwell has overperformed, he'll most likely come down to earth. Gauthier is that mystery box that could be something nice or he just won't put it together. It feels dumb to risk losing him. Should've exposed Rooney.

I think they pick Blackwell (I would've picked Gauthier) because hehe'more proven.

I don’t see it as a big deal and there is still a chance they take Blackwell over Goat. Not going to worry about losing any of our unprotected players.

Landeskog exposure tells you there's not a negotiable difference in their contract talks and more like a chasm. He's a nice player, but he's not a guy I throw 8-9M and term at.

Same with the Ovechkin exposure then?

Looking around the league, I think there was one pending UFA protected. Landeskog was never going to be protected.

Because he's a pending UFA. Seattle can take him, sure, but it's risky b/c...well...he's a pending UFA who may not want to play in Seattle.

I guess it's just scary because its not like we have other awesome players Seattle can take. I could see them picking Goodrow thinking its worth the risk since theyre only risking losing like Blackwell or Gauts.

Blackwell will be Seattle's pick. He's a player that can help them now. Gauthier might help them in the future. There will be better future options available.

Rooney over Gauthier is an absolute joke.

I have to agree. I like Rooney, and he was solid for us, but he had a career year because Quinn over used him. I would have kept Gauthier based off boom/bust talent. It’s a coin flip whether they picked Blackwell or Rooney IMO.
It’s not a huge loss, but personally I would have went the other way and protected Gauthier

I wanted to keep the younger players too but Drury wants guys in certain roles

It's not scary because the Rangers have something ironed out most likely which will be announced post expansion draft. Francis isn't blowing a pick on a guy who they aren't going to be able to keep.

If they were worried about it, they would have used a slot on him.

I know they're looking to free up some cap, which they've done with the Ladd & Leddy trades. But wow, Bailey left unprotected, Martin protected. Bailey has bounced back and at $5M for 2 years, that's a good pick for Seattle.
