The way to make the player happy is bonuses and cash up front. Net present value. Not all $8MM contracts are created equal. 6 years $50MM frontloaded so they player has 2/3 of the money halfway through the contract. NMC that evolves into limited NTC. Then the backend can be traded (if necessary) to a team that can handle a big cap but has less cash.

Makar's luck is that he played enough games in year 1 for the season to count as an accrued season, so he's eligible for offer sheets, unlike Quinn Hughes who signed at the same time.

I'm sure Makar will sign a new deal, but players are being smart about it. 10-15 years ago, players would just sign for as many years as possible, regardless of the offer.

The pendulum is swinging in that direction for sure. All it will take though is for 1 or 2 of these young kids to get hurt on these short contracts which either makes them retire or pushes their following contracts down for that to change.

The issue with this type of contract for the Rangers is the buyout at the end. Front-loaded deals are bitches to buyout

chytil is such a funny case, if he wasnt nyr property then the same guys pumping his tires now would be saying he is worth gauthier and robertson in a trade bc of his injuries, soft matchups, and him never breaking 30pts in his career

Multiple posters were saying it starts with Laf, they legitimately believe Suzuki is worth Laf++. They are saying a thread should be locked for offering Chytil, Lundkvist & Jones for Suzuki lmao which is an absolute robery for the Habs
that's bc we on this board value our prospects based on what we think they will be while we view other team's prospects as just prospects. Other teams do the same thing. that's why trades involving prospects become so complicated figuring out values. i agree the original trade that was proposed would be a good deal for the habs

10mil today is worth a lot more than 12 mil 5 years from now...

Yes, but front-loaded deals are much easier to trade to budget teams like Ottawa. It gets them to the cap floor, without paying the actual money for it.

It's a delicate matter and a fine line between a favourable buyout or a tradable contract.

Actually with escrow being high, it might make more sense for the player to have his salary back loaded (assuming the player feels escrow will go down by those years)

If the player has any type of even limited no trade, he is likely to block a trade to a team who is trying to build a team on the cheap.

When a player is given the choice to waive his NTC or lose 1/3 of the pay still owed to him (which happens in a buy out), it should be an easy decision

An easy reference to use when seeing the will or heart of a player is to see how they react when a scrum breaks out. Guys like Lindgren and Buch go into the scrum to protect their linemates knowing full well they are likely to get the worst of it, guys like Kreider, Zib, Chytil stay on the outside, and in games like the Isles, Bruins, Caps or in playoffs in general they'll disappear due to their lack of will or desire to get dirty. I'm not sure we can build a team around all three, especially two we have "A's" on.

most players that get bought out will get new contracts for more than the 1/3 they lost plus they get to pick where they go.
