It's a shame that we'll have to lose Kreider to keep Skjei and Staal and Smith and pay for Shattenkirk, but that's the reality of the Rangers. I don't know what their plan is exactly, but I have to admit that I worry—for as much as Panarin might have 'accelerated' the rebuild, losing Kreider has the potential to devastate it. Just my opinion...

if we trade kreider it will have nothing to do with staal, smith or shattenkirk's buyout...paying him $7 mil next year isn't an issue. the $$ he makes now plus what namestnikov was getting is enough. the problem is when you are still paying him $7 mil+ when he's 35, 36 years old

Disagree. That's a factor, maybe, if we have the option to resign him. But the other contracts remove that factor even from the conversation to begin with.

But they don’t. If Kreider wanted a 1 year deal we could sign him with no problem and those guys aren’t an issue beyond 1 more year.

My worry is the team overachieves then so they still trade Kreider ? An own rental is a bad idea

I’d sign him but expose him at expansion which sounds kinda nuts but Zib, Panarin, Buch, Howden , Andersson , Chytil , Lemieux ..... unless a kid super sucks that’s the 7F

Do you really think Kreider is going to sign a deal without some protection?

Also, what does that say to your player? "Yeah we just signed you to a long term deal but were kinda iffy on if we want you around long term so were going to expose you at the expansion draft and hope it works out. If not, good luck in Seattle Chris and sorry about you being stuck there for 6-7 years!"

Completely unrealistic.

I have no fear of that...we are not going to be that good, the plan hasn't changed. if they aren't willing to commit to kreider long term he will be dealt at the deadline just like zuke and hayes, there is no doubt imo.

so another twist to moving kreider...they aren't going to go with zibanejad, panarin and 7 kids in the top 9. you can't be that young...so names is gone, if kreider is gone and maybe strome than who are some options for 25-27 year old top 9 forwards that we can bring in to try to round out the forward units??

McKegg and Haley. Fast is there too. Maybe not ideal but It’s a start.

You can bring back a body in a Kreider trade.

trades and free agency will also need to be visited. I get the concern with being too young, but that isn’t a concern that should justify tossing out a contract that had a high probability of being bad pretty soon.

Yeah. Also, at that point Lemieux is no longer a "kid"...

So in reality, in the top-9 you've got Panarin, Zibanejad, Buchnevich, and Lemieux as your mid-upper 20s guys. One more wouldn't be the worst idea in the world, but it shouldn't be too hard to address.

they are 4th liners though...so it gives you vets for the lockerroom...but I'm thinking you probably don't want a 2nd and 3rd lines with no one over 24. not that it can't work but thats really young assuming the top line stays together.

The problem I run into is that I'm not exactly ready to trade young players out, so that means acquiring a player is limited to the free agent market, where middle-6 players tend to get overpaid. Not that there aren't some interesting names out there for next year... but it's essentially the same issue we have with Kreider. Money and term.

I think it's somewhat likely we run next year with a middle-6 that young.
