FKA Roo Returns...Still A Contrarian Apparently
Lesh just turned 24. I don't think he will be good. But he had a good run in the AHL, is cheap, and the team knows him. Players can improve and we will see. The Dereks are all like 34+ years old. Youre spending cap on players that won't be here past a year and ability could hugely diminish from 1 year to the next. And maybe your next argument is fourth liners are mercenaries anyways. Well I would say continuity is valuable and if we are going to spend money, why spend it on the older players when better players, Acciari, Nosek, Rod, etc. Can be had for similar money and more years. There is a better way to spend the money.
Having said this I can guarantee it will bite me in the ass and we sign Stepan July 1st.
Whoa, whoa, whoa...I never made that argument anywhere and in all my time posting I have stated my opinion on 4th liners.
I am of the firm belief for the rest of my life that 4th liners are either young players on an ELC with a particular set of skills who can do two of three: PK/PP/win faceoffs OR reclamation projects in the bargain bin with good advanced analytics who can also do some of the above (Grabner).
The only time you ever go against that is for a one year stopgap to help kids break in, or at the TDL for a rental who can do other things and move up.
In this case, the Rangers have no Cs in the organization (thanks Grubbe) so:
-You sign a competent veteran center to a one year deal
-You put him in between two homegrown younger players on ELCs.
-The money will come from most if not all of the UFAs going bye bye and trading Goodrow. The One year veteran replacement 4th liner will cost 1/3 of Goodrow.
My idea is to place one of the Dereks (lets say Ryan for argument sake) in between Cullye/Edstrom/Lockwood/bargain bin (ideally it's Cullye and Edstrom) and just let them skate, bowling ball, and PK all year.
