Roster Building Thread VI (2022-23): Offseason edition

about a month ago i suggested panarin to the cats for reinhart and lomberg and i got laughed at. watching this run I would still do that trade in a nanosecond...
That type of trade would be great for the Rangers to help plug organizational holes and raise the overall floor of the roster. I just don’t see any chance that Florida would do something like it, especially after this run. I don’t really see any team that Panarin would waive for, has the need, and could provide enough value back to make it worthwhile

Somewhere like LA would make sense, but they won’t have the cap and want to extend Gavrikov. Anaheim? Maybe Verbeek would try to push things a bit faster now that they’ll get the 2OA and have key pieces in place, but the timing seems off for them. It’s not an easy deal to make, if it’s even possible

I still think VK is skilled enough to play in the NHL. His KHL success was not a fluke. He just doesn’t have the work ethic to make it, which is another story entirely because the scouts need to be evaluating that just as much as the kid’s hockey skill.

Drury would never have made that pick. I don’t deny that Drury has his warts but I am pretty sure that he won’t be whiffing on character moving forward.
Gorton's biggest flaw, and hurt us a lot, was wildly misidentifying character.

If you were petulant and/or hustled a lot because you can't skate, Gorton saw that as attitude and effort.

Lemieux and Andersson really stand out as Gorton "character guys" who were just malcontents and didn't skate well enough for NHL hockey.

It's funny how the 2 guys careers have mirrored each other so far. Both had a Norris and 2 other top 5 finishes before age 25. At basically this exact point in both guys careers, the Rangers came off a breakout season (91-92, 21-22) only to finish without a series win the next season. Led to the firing of a successful head coach (Neilson/Gallant). Now who is our Mike Keenan (Babcock?) and how do we get history to continue repeating itself?
Kind of offtopic but the NBA Denver vs LA series showed me how myopic it is to judge guys by voted awards. Denver and LA had multiple guys who had been voted all stars, all NBA, MVPs, etc but arguably the best player in the series (Jamal Murray) has never even been voted an all star.

NBA All-star voting is a bad example of this. I'm a fairly casual NBA watcher outside of the Knicks and I knew Jamal Murray was Denver's second best player. Look no further than the Knicks this year. Randle was an all-star and Brunson wasnt. Shouldve been reversed given who showed up in the playoffs

I think voted awards in general are a bad way to judge guys. Decades ago some guys who later made the NBA HOF were not making all star teams. The excuse was they were on losing teams. The player was still great. Sometimes 1 guy can not determine a teams record.

I watch the ECF and I just want to be FAST and hard forechecking team. We’re so plodding and predictable. I want the speed and tenacity to be on top of the opponent the second they pick up the puck and just cause HAVOC around their net, capitalize on garbage goals and quick shots off broken plays that are created by just buzzing. You can reach a team to do that. Some players don’t have it in their DNA, but most can be taught. Just chase the puck and the man who has it like he has the only known dose of the cure for cancer and you need it for your mother. Every shift. The end.
Honest question, does this team even have the conditioning to play like that right away? It took Torts like a full year to get the guys conditioned how he wanted, I'm thinking the next coach is gonna have the same issue

Yeah that would have just been dumb.

The crazy thing about Florida is that despite the fact that they were basically marred in sucking for a long time, their big contributors are NOT guys who came through their system.

Tkachuk - Trade
Reinhart - Trade
Bennett - Trade
Montour - Trade
Bob - UFA
Verhaeghe - UFA (and what a move this was)

The only top 10 picks who they have playing significant roles right now are Barkov who has had his moments but has been mostly quiet and Ekblad who has really struggled.

Bennet, Montour and Verhaeghe together BARELY cost more than Panarin.

When people ask how can you expect to move Panarin and get better, its by doing shit like that.

Don’t tell mas.

Absolutely not.

But that still needs to be the model and whoever comes in, along with strength and conditioning coaches, etc. need to be focused on implementing it, even if it means it takes a year to get the conditioning on a par where they can successfully execute it.

I have raised concerns about the conditioning of this team for over three years. they would look tired in regular season overtimes...

i brought this up a month ago, no way the cats would do it now after the showing these guys have made. the point is we need to be better about identifying these kind of guys rather than the uber skill bullshit. you need both parts

I don't know how we can watch this year's playoffs and come to the conclusion that the postseason is anything more than a huge crapshoot based on which teams and goalies happen to be feeling it at any given time.

Just get in.
Get in and pray for good matchups and injuries on the opposing team.

The Rangers would have been out in 6 last year if Crosby didn't get Trouba'ed.

So we’re saying that Drury wouldn’t make that pick if he was the GM but reportedly Drury also was the one allegedly personally scouting Kravstov and pounding the table to take him?

Do I have that right? Lol

Thats what I remember.

Bobby Mac stated that Drury went to Russia in person to scout him during the KHL playoffs and gave glowing reports.

They wouldn't have done it prior to the trade deadline either. That's a big cap hit to a team like Florida. They have some cap this offseason, but adding Panarin would stop them from filling their backend, etc.

I wouldn't expect anything less from you honestly. You make it seem like all the other original 6 teams have had so much success recently. Toronto hasn't won a cup since 1967 and just went 20 fing years without getting past the 1st round. Montreal hasn't won a cup since 1993. Boston has won exactly 1 cup(2011) since 1972.
I wouldn't expect anything less from you either.

Just like the management of this sad team...

Completely content with mediocrity.

There seems to be some sort of notion that the scary boogeyman that made all the wrong decisions is gone in Gorton and that Drury wouldn’t have made those mistakes

Which lacks in context as if Drury wasn’t a primary stakeholder in all those decisions and had a huge voice at the table about what was getting done

idk lol

Im on these boards way too much and havent seen this to be the case at all. In fact, I see it more the other way around where fans project Gorton's bad moves on Drury even though he was probably at best the 4th or 5th most prominent voice in Gorton's cabinet.

I'm a pro-Drury guy, but he's been a mixed bag. We're about to go into year 3 under him and we've made the playoffs twice and had a deep run and an embarrassing exit. His seat is going to be much hotter once the new coach is hired. Rightfully so.

I don’t remember this but if it happened, then, yikes. Of all things, I’d think a guy with Drury’s background would be most in tune with work ethic and character.

Just give me all of the poor Czech kids and hard working western Canadian farm boys. Does that make me a xenophobe?
