Shanahan was in the twilight of his career. He was hardly at the “skilled” level he was at in his prime. Avery, I mean cmon. Really? Callahan was a grinder blue collar hard worker. He was not some skilled forward. He fought for every inch. Then you go onto mention more guys who just were not “skilled”. They filled their roles well. But not skilled. Barnaby and Simon nowhere near “skilled.”
We haven’t had those skilled and physically nasty players. Just haven’t. Not every team has Matt Tkachuk. Who did Vegas have in their Top 6 that fit that bill? Maybe 1 guy? Same goes for Tampa, Colorado, St. Louis. They maybe had 1 guy. It is all about the team identity. I truly believe a lot of that starts with the coach. And the coaches that can draw that out of group always have short shelf lives because its like an adrenaline rush; the Coaches come out of the gate on this high of how they are going to demand and command that certain identity, but eventually it wears out. You saw it with Torts. You saw it with Keenan. And I think you will see it with Laviolette. We just gotta hope we see the end result of Keenan and not Torts. Laviolette will have more talent at the start compared to Torts. By the time Torts got Rick Nash, things were seemingly turning, plus he just could not figure out how to utilize the talents he had, Gaborik/Nash should have been electric.
Bottom line is I think a Coach like Lavy is coming in at the right time. And I think we will be just fine if we add Tarasenko/Kane as the last piece to the Top 9. Maybe you can get one more body in here for the 4th line. Tyler Motte. Let Cuylle marinate longer in Hartford.
