I think we will find out a lot during the WC and see if getting away from here brings a different player.
Would be great if he decided to play but he's an RFA he's not and probably wants to protect himself from injury or effort. Gotta protect that next contract, could be his last.

Leafs can't just take an extra $4 million. You probably have to take back Matt Murray in the deal too if you're not retaining. Willing to do that?

Uh yeah absolutely. Murray is staring down the barrel LTIR next time he gets bumped in the crease.

Panarin needs to go hang out with Kucherov and try and get some of his killer instinct to rub off of him. Similarly talented players but one is beyond happy go lucky while the other is basically a scumbag assassin who is a killer in the playoffs. We need Panarin to be that guy for us considering the space and role he occupies on this team.

I think we're wasting our time talking about trading him, I don't see any way that realistically happens. What needs to happen is to figure out how to get him over this playoff hump. He shouldn't be so defeated and downtrodden about his performance, he shouldn't be defeated and letting it not working snowball into a disaster of a series which is what happened this year and if you take him at face value in his comments it seems entirely mental.

Whether it be the new coach, new linemates, new role - you need to figure out how to make it work with him being a key cog next season.

I’d take Murray back if I could get Nylander out of it.

Expiring contract; but so is Nylander are we sure we want to pay Nylander’s next contract though?

Marner would be more interesting if they are sick of him. Panarin and Goodrow for Marner and Murray and you just LTIR Murray and:l/or let him walk
I agree; the value of Panarin to the Leafs is he would bring a different element and is locked in for another 3 seasons. Marner could either walk for nothing after 1 more year or is likely going to demand something equal to or greater than Panarin's cost.

It's certainly worth a phone call. I would be reaching out to all the teams with a disappointing playoff exit or season to see if they are willing to trade one of their higher priced players for Panarin in a mostly "hockey deal". Problem is, there aren't many teams that both have a player that is interesting enough and is a place that Panarin would waive for. Toronto might be the only one that fits.

I really feel like the only teams Panarin would consider would be the Bolts and the Panthers.

Panthers really seem like an obvious fit.
but why would florida want him. everything panarin does is what huberdeau did for them and they traded him away. panarin playing for maurice would be comical

marner is signed long term, nylander is the pending ufa next year. the leafs have no cap space to fill out their roster and they are taking on the 2nd highest cap hit in the league? gop to teams that had disappointing playoffs and offer them a player that is comically bad in the playoffs and has that cap hit? you cant make this stuff up.

Marner has 2 years. Not really long term. He also has 9 goals in 48 playoff games. I don't think the Leafs will look at Panarin as "comically bad in the playoffs".

What does that have to do with Laff very much not playing for Canada? If Laff worked like Kakko does in the offseason we probably wouldn't be having these conversations.
what are you talking about. i was talking about kakko, you named kakko in the post i replied to. i am not talking about laffy, i have been talking about kakko, keep up before being sassy...

panarin has been comically bad here in the playoffs, and if he wasnt then moving him would not even be something people would have an interest in.

The Laf hate is so bad. 39 points as a third liner. This is what this organization has made this guy...a chip and chase, body banging third liner that they've now asked to stand in front of the net. Too many LWs on the roster. Does Drury have a plan to solve this?
Top 6 RW.

This was your response in a discussion about Laff:
I think we will find out a lot during the WC and see if getting away from here brings a different player.
And I'm supposed to assume your were talking about Kakko? Ok.

You're not wrong. You have to apply the same logic to every player. I just don't see any plus skills that Lafreniere has. He's good at precisely nothing.

I could very easily see Kakko being good in a system. If you can't see Panarin's potential, you're seeing what you want to see - his biggest detractors will admit he has all-world talent.

What does Lafreniere do to encourage you that he succeeds with a different approach?
He hasn't done anything to show me the current approach works, so I'd rather actually know if this guy is what we all expected, which was basically someone like Huberdeau, or if he is a bust. Repeating the same thing over and over is insanity. The Rangers are sure great at developing 3rd liners. He's not going anywhere at the moment. He'll be a Ranger next season, so what is the absolute worst thing that can happen if he is given all the opportunities?

This same thing that happens whenever a player leaves the Rangers that was supposed to be a star or finally be in the right spot for them in their career.

The Rangers have done this with all their forwards (and even some of their defensive picks), and in the end, what ends up happening is the best results often come when the team has given up on the player and moves them.

Prime example is Brett Howden. We'd all be dying to get a player with his skillset at this point (and playoff production), but we literally would have shipped him off for a dozen donuts. We were thrilled with getting what we got in return. Then Buchnevich was fantastic for the Rangers and went to St. Louis and is even better. Jimmy Vesey couldn't a get a job with a team after being with the Rangers, now he's back and was one of their most effective forwards across the board. Shouldn't even really bring up JT Miller, but we know the kind of player he is now. We all wanted Skjei gone and Carolina turns him into a legit top pairing player. Ryan Graves had to go to another team and have them tell him he needs to change his entire game if he wants to be something, does it, and then becomes a 2nd pairing guy. I can already see it happening with Schneider in the future unless things change.

So I would rather zig than zag because all we've done is zag with our development and we don't get to reap the benefits of it. On top of that, when Kakko was drafted, everyone, including the coach, would talk about he doesn't have to be the savior and the franchise doesn't fall on his shoulders. Same was done for Lafreniere. Maybe some expectations for the future are needed instead of this laissez faire approach where they just go about their role on the team given to them. Force the role onto them. These guys have been "the guy" every step of the way, so we don't treat them or develop them that way and you end up with what we got.

I putting Lafreniere out there on PP1 in Panarin's spot. I'm putting Kakko in the bumper and I'm letting it ride. The organization has gone with the kids gloves approach with both for way too long. You can't get better at something without working on it and then applying it.

I hate Duchene as a player, so that would be a no for me.

Scoring rates at even strength

Duchene
21-22
1.3 g/60
1.5 a/60

22-23
0.9 g/60
1.4 a/60

Panarin
21-22
0.8 g/60
2.1 a/60

22-23
0.9 g/60
1.6 a/60

Duchene makes only $8m on the cap and plays RW, a position of need. Same term left on his deal and doesn't have any sort of no-trade clause.

I don't think it would be 1 for 1, Nashville would need to add, but I could get behind this move, allocate those cap dollars to a RW with speed and save ~$4m on the salary cap.

The only trade that makes some sense for both teams is Nylander for Panarin
Rangers have had good luck with Nylanders.
How about a good old fashioned blockbuster?
We include Kreider, Bread, and Fox.
They include Mathews, Nylander and Morgan Reilly?
