If he wants a Lundqvist kind of contract i agree. We've seen what happened when the G position is taking up too much of the cap. We either learn from that or repeat it.

Letting Igor walk in free agency might be the dumbest take I’ve ever heard on here. Hypothetically speaking, if the Rangers aren’t going to sign Igor they would trade him and probably get a good package for him. They wouldn’t just say ok we’re riding out your last year and letting you go for nothing. My god, I need a shot of something after reading that take. This wasn’t directed at you btw.

I don't exactly agree with trading Shesty to prove a point, however, I do think his play covers up for a lot of mistakes. Absolutely agree that this team needs to be better 5v5 but would like to see how the team is under Lavi for a bit.

I can't prove it and not a hockey genius but the way this team played under Gallant was maddening to watch at times despite having some success. There has to be a more efficient way getting the puck out of the D zone than just waiting behind the net for the perfect stretch pass that rarely develops. Hopefully this team is more committed to forechecking as well.

During the playoff runs under Torts and AV I feel like we were the best in the league at winning puck battles along the boards and now we would be lucky to be half as good. Obviously different teams with limited firepower back then but I'm curious if these elements can be emphasized under Lavi for better 5v5.
I'm sure it'll be different but if they're not like 21st in CF%, I'll be very surprised. They always are because the organization doesn't value outplaying the opponent. The goalie will be there.

Then trade him. No skin off my ass.

I just don't see him getting much. There's 32 teams and like 40 good goaltenders.

I am worried and hesitant about Igor’s next contract but if it’s Carey Price numbers I’d have to strongly consider trading him. Who knows how the league is going to look by then. They might be able to trade Igor to a team that’s young and up and coming and needs that goalie. A team like Buffalo.

Im more grumpy about last season when Kakko started with zib and Kreider and the line generated a ton of chances but Kakko got the boot when they struggled to convert grade A chances
That line would have almost certainly started scoring as the poor shooting luck changed but instead we got a line flip
the first incarnation was good but he didn't shoot, for all he did look more capable... don't shoot, what's more minutes gonna do?

Yeah I think I’m good on Tarasenko. I believe Kane is coming here for cheap at some point anyway. Just hope Vlad lands out West.
With Wheeler added and assuming Kane is coming, there’s probably no room for Tarasenko anyhow. Unfortunately.

If his line mates had finished the chances he was setting up then it’d have looked fine

I don’t see why they’d want Kane back, it was a shit show getting him and mediocre as hell with him here

I wouldn't want last seasons Kane back. I guess the hope is he will be better after hip surgery.

I wont argue his play in his first year earned him a demotion from the first line.
But lets not also argue that the hook came awfully quick.

I think yes, you do need to give high draft picks that top opportunity if you want them to hit the ground running.
I think you need to live with mistakes they make, and coach around them and not give them a hook.
If you've actually drafted a talented player, then they need to play in a role that suits that. Playing into strengths, not starting off eliminating weaknesses.
I’m from the earn it school although they need to be in positions to succeed relatively. I’m glad we didn’t stick Brendl in the top six or automatically make the team. Guess it depends on the individual and what they can handle.

Coaches would be thrilled to play them more. I keep saying its not about what they would have done if they played 16-18 minutes. Its about how they play in minutes 1-15. If they excel in minutes 1-15 coaches will trip over them to get them back on the ice for minutes 16-18.

So CapFriendly has us with 6,175,400 in cap space at the moment. They also have Harpur and Mackey on the roster along with Belzille. If they did plan on starting* the season with the minimum, had Gustafsson as the 6th D and Jones traded somewhere else, then they would be at $8,500,000 roughly. They definitely will have enough to give the bridge deals to Miller and Lafreniere. Now it comes down to, do they trade Goodrow and bring back Tarasenko at a bargain discount. It is now July 9th and he is still sitting out there. It just seems to me like this is where he wants to be and he was let down when he saw things unfolding the way they did on day 1. Or almost like maybe the Rangers told his previous agents what could work, the Rangers held firm and then went in other directions, i.e., Wheeler.

And if anything, depending on what Kane will sign for after the season starts, they could fit him and still bank space throughout the season

I believe the premise regarding goalies is that you should not rely on them to win you games, but they should be good enough not to Lose them for you as well.

He won't even get a haul. Teams are getting crunched by the cap and wising up to what the value of goaltenders actually is.
I can definitely see the thinking/logic in moving Shesterkin, and while I might be tempted (I would have to be blown away) I would rather keep him long term; the only way they might move him is at a trade deadline and the team is out of legitimate playoff contention, which I don't see in the next 2-3 years, barring something unforeseen. Of course, if they can't re-sign him, then trade him; I'm not letting him walk out the door and get nothing in return.

The cap will start to go up next season, so his cap hit, on an extension, wouldn't be that much of an issue (if it's within reason). Plus, they don't have a ready-to-go replacement for Shesterkin right now anyway, and likely won't for a couple of years, maybe Garand eventually becomes that guy.

I think the premise is that a bunch of goalies are capable of getting for you at the right time.

Some guys just suck and great goalies win too but it’s a nice to have, not a necessity.

How many teams search year-after-year (some decade after decade) for a franchise goalie and never seem to find one? It's like having a franchise QB: when you have one, it adds stability to the team and it's a position that you just don't have to worry about. You can concentrate on other positions of weakness. When you have a franchise goalie, you treasure that goalie and say, "well, at least we're not the Oilers, or the Flyers, or the Leafs." or any other team that would give anything to have a goalie like Shesty. While I'm personally not ready to say that he is Henrik yet (one more top season would move him, IMO, into that category) he just very well may be.
