I personally wouldve bought out Goodrow but I understand why they didnt. Drury must not feel threatened by an offer sheet, and with the cap space saved they just wouldve signed another bottom 6er to replace Goodrow at 75% of the cost, so the "savings" were a bit fugazi.

Goodrow is a good fit for Laviolette's style, and hopefully Peca and the new staff can actually make him into a center. Get Vesey to start taking faceoffs too.
The cost savings would be more like 50% tbh. You could get 2 Goodrows for 3.6 mil in todays NHL.

Are either Miller/Laf arbitration elligible? That would open another buyout window or something? Forget how that works
Neither are, but even with that the only contracts that can be bought out in a potential 2nd window have to be over a 4M AAV. Goodrow is under that, so he's not eligible. It's either he is on the team or he is traded.

is it fair to say that drury is actually bad at his job?
I know people are frustrated at him but right now and that's fine it seems impossible to have a team take a contract without adding assets. So many teams trying to do the same thing we are doing.
Between the cap crunch and the Trouba/Panarin contracts it is what it is.

Buying out Goodrow was absolutely an option though. Credit for 2 years then completely manageable once the debt is paid and cap is higher.

Really no reason not to do it unless they 1. (over)value Goodrow on the ice or 2. Drury doesn't want to look bad / piss off Dolan

At this point I kinda like this team. Haha

Brod is always working hard and plays with speed and if you saw Blidh in Hartford you know he is a pain in the ass. Banking cap space and a little LTIR fun with our friend in the corner there. Ha

Really all this means Miller/Laf will be getting 1-2 year deals.

OK in a vacuum but case in point why the NYR have had a bottom 5 cap situation for the majority of years since the cap was implemented.

Always overpaying the Barclay Goodrows of the world.
You're right. Other teams locking up their star young players for 8 years while we can't. A guy like Miller who is alreay a top 4 guy and can easily become a top pair guy should be locked up for at least 5-6 years but we can't. Instead we have to probably wait when can goes up so he can demand even a larger percentage of the teams cap money.

and don't forget Trouba's who really is a 4-5 million dollar d man at most..

Our top 6 lacks speed and physicality so we should make sure our 4th line is made up ofvfast hard hitting monsters. Having a soft or slow 4th line is a killer with our top 6. Vesey and Goody both are good players but not what we need on our 4th line. We need a 4th line that other teams don't want to play against. One that other teams leave the ice with assorted pain or bruises. That is from hitting and sticks not fights.

It's obvious they value him more than some here. He's a good player and scored 31 points playing mostly 4th line minutes. He's versatile also and PK's. He's just a tad too expensive with the flat cap.

Goodrow would be more worth the money if he could actually play center and win faceoffs consistently. Is this something the new coaching staff can help with? Let's hope. I do think Goody can be a very important part of this elusive shutdown line we've been looking for though.
