The Trocheck signing drives me nuts because Chytil came off a breakout playoff round. It was completely unnecessary, and put us in a bad spot as our younger players get better. If Kakko breaks out next year there’s going to be a real problem, even with the cap going up.

The thing that kills me too is that I like Trocheck as a player a lot.
I couldn't disagree more. It was very necessary to get a quality 2c in the fold. Chytil had a decent year but having depth down the middle is essential and something this team didn't have for a long time. Trocheck had a 65 point season, their best FO guy, and his AAV is reasonable for what he brings. How did it put us in a bad spot exactly? Chytil got plenty of playing time and performed well but also went long stretches where he was quiet and wasn't scoring. Handing him the 2C could have been a risky move before the season so getting a solid pivot like Trocheck who plays with an edge was the best move Drury made last off season. If there is a time when Chytil is ready to assume 2C responsibilities then they can simply slide Trocheck to 3C. This is a good problem to have.

What is the buyout formula? It’s crazy to me that they actually get a credit for two years buying out Goodrow. How the hell does that work?

This is a rhetorical question. I looked it up on CapFriendly. Still seems dumb to me.

Has anyone played with the math and figured out if there is a way to structure a contract with a plan to buy it out that would give a team a massive credit for a couple of years?

The buyout mechanism was designed to account for salary paid versus caphit. The premise was to stop teams from lower AAV by making a contract longer and front loading salary to players.

Goodrow was a strange case as the Rangers have actually paid Goodrow LESS than the ~3.6M caphit ( 2.5M then 3M). Goodrow is set to make 5.1M this season.

Since Goodrow was paid less actual dollars than his 3.6M caphit, the Rangers would get a cap credit the next 2 seasons if he was bought out. It was a built-in checkvalve in the contract if the signing was a bad idea.

could do a lot worse for a guy that some people want that can move up and down the lines..

Wheeler makes sense as a guy with size and speed who can play in the top 6, but he was stripped of the captaincy a year ago and has been the leader of a team that has underperfomed their talent level for years. I dont think we need another one of those lol

Oh I get that but beggars can’t be choosers either with like no cap space.

Speed? I don’t think he is that fast. At least not anymore.

I like Goodrow but he is just too expensive in todays still flat cap era. They could do a lot with that 3.6 mil savings like get 2 similar Goodrow types for the same price. The cap credit the next 2 years is just an added bonus. I would be surprised if they didn't pull the trigger today.

I think they also expected the cap to start going up

I'd be fine w signing cut loose young guys like Steel, Comtois and CFoote,
if they dont earn jobs, waive 'em,
if back in A w Pack they'd be playing to rescue their careers
and useful depth if need arises

They add the speed element in the bottom 6. Tarasenko has an elite shot and scoring ability. They need that too…
at 5 x5 I would pass. It's time to start investing in our own guys. Otherwise it's the same old story.

These contracts from the Hawks are a f***ing joke.

They have over 20M in capspace and you need a lot of money to convince a player to join a team where Peter Mzarek is the starter and Jarred Tinordi in your top 6.

I have no problem with teams spending some money for locker room / development reasons while Arizona will try to pay players in coupons.

PS Kyle Davidson, if you need someone to carry Connor Bedard's bags or taste his food, I'll happily do it for 4M.

But if they could convince him to take an AAV of $4.5 or less?
over how many years? he is gonan be 32 and has had some serious shoulder injuries no?
I love the way he plays but I don't think we should take the risk over 5 years.
I can't see him taking 4 million X3 years.

They couldn’t do 5 even with Goodrow out. Would need to be like 4-4.25 AAV
exactly. Someone would offer him 5 million plus. So would he take a million plus per year over 4-5 years to stay here?
