Eller makes a lot of sense as a low-cost Kämpf replacement, only one who can bring a bit more O to the table. Eller has scored in double figures in 10 of the last 12 seasons (the two exceptions came during shortened seasons when Eller still scored eight goals apiece). Last year, as a 33-year-old, playing almost 15 minutes per game between the Caps and Avs, Eller chipped in with 10 goals.
But that’s not why you get Lars Eller. You get him because he’s a pain in the butt to play against, uber competitive, trustworthy and able to play against skilled competitors. He’s also mighty experienced, with over 100 playoff games under his belt. Ideally, he’s lining up as a fourth-line centre, but in a pinch he can move up and take on heavier, heartier minutes.
During the playoffs with
Colorado, Eller’s two most frequent opponents up front were
Jordan Eberle and
Matty Beniers. The Avs won almost 60 percent of the expected goals in Eller’s minutes against Beniers. Eller also won over 65 percent of his draws in the postseason. He won a Cup with the Caps in 2018. The Leafs know him well from his early years with the Habs.
