Lafreniere does nothing above average at NHL level. He doesn’t skate above average, he doesn’t shoot or pass above average. He doesn’t defend above average. What does he do? Maybe it’s confidence but it’s not like he didn’t get opportunity.

You are talking about Marchesseault like that’s the rule. He is the exception. There’s a difference

I swear people think this kid is 26 or 27. He's gonna be a good player, he does all those things you mentioned above average, his shot, his passing and even his skating but people wanna dump on him because he didn't put up 80 points as soon as he got here, from a guy who was scouting players during his time in the Q you will all be pleasantly surprised when he's complete. He needs opportunity, confidence and a proper offseason of training. I said it when we drafted both Lafreniere and Kakko that they played like power forwards in junior and that it would take time for them to get enough strength to do it at the NHL level. I said the same about Howden as well, even if he isn't in the same class as the other two and he has finally turned the corner, same with Barron. Everyone here wants instant gratification but it doesn't always work that way, the fan base and the organization have no patience.

Something to consider here and it's an important point:

The Rangers signed Barclay Goodrow as a UFA and gave up no assets (although they did trade for his rights I guess) and subsequently gave him a 6 year deal @ $3.62m per season.

The Avalanche just traded a pretty high 2nd rounder for the rights to Ross Colton and are about to give him, somewhere in the neighborhood of $3m per season (this is per APV).

If a team were looking for a bottom-6, swiss-army knife guy with leadership qualities but who may not be a preferred destination for UFA's due to various circumstance, Goodrow would be an attractivr asset for them. He has 4 years left at a reasonable cap hit.

I know we all like to say that he is a 4th liner but his production and usage on (2) straight contending teams (TB and NYR) say otherwise.

I think Goodrow is tradeable but I'm not sure the oranization is looking to do so. I wouldn't be surprised if he was on the roster next season.

Colton is way better offensively than Goodrow and could conceivably get a lot of playing time on the first or second line in Colorado (in the spot vacated by Rodrigues).

Stars get Dadonov for $2.25M.... we have Goodrow for $3.6M

one of the many reasons why we never win.

But what would we trade away to do it? Pittsburgh isn't looking for picks and prospects.
Trocheck? only guy I could think of

I'm not arguing who is better, just that they would appear to fill similar roles for a team and while Colton may be better, is he a 2nd round pick better?

This is what I mean:

Say I am the San Jose Sharks. I rebuilding. It's doubtful I am going to get a good veteran to sign here for various reasons. I could trade a 2nd rounder for a guy like Colton, or I could trade a 6th rounder (and possibly shed a contract I don't want) for Goodrow. I think I would choose the latter.

Maybe a silly question, but would anyone do:

Granlund + 14th for Goodrow + 23rd

The Pens could buyout Goodrow and get the cap credit for the next 2 years (which are the only years that matter to them really).

The Rangers could play Granlund, trade him with retention or buy him out. It's a shorter buyout
