1)Try to trade Goodrow for value. Extra pick or two. Good luck. Or a cheaper player the Rangers can use. Cheaper as in $1M or so.
2)Try to trade Goodrow for nothing. Goodrow for a UFA expiring contract or some mid-level prospect/career minor leaguer. Pacioretty and Hall trades.
3)Buy him out.

The 4th year of the buyout is $3.65M. However, the current CBA expires after the 3rd year of the buyout. The salary cap should be approaching $95M-$100M by then.

Maybe the Rangers can sign more than two players from that group. Some of those players are looking for $2M. The cold smack in the face is coming. Money was tight last summer. Try to get them in the $1M-$1.5M range. Somewhere in the middle. One year. Money will be tight this summer. Dubas will be looking at those players. Maybe offer a pro tryout. Build a team with 13 good forwards.

Kreider
Zibanejad
Kakko
Panarin
Chytil
Lafeniere
Trocheck
Vesey
Othmann
Cuylle

That's 10. Three more forwards. 13. If Othmann and/or Cuylle start the season in the AHL, the Rangers will still have good depth. Very player is slotted better. Offer a tryout deal for $800,000. The kids won't be blocked.

Barbashev is getting a 7-8 year contract for $5M-$6M. He is one of the few players who will get paid.
Nosek and Hathaway would by my 2 top choice considering they can afford them

Some of the people who cover these teams are clueless. Winnipeg got back three roster players in the trade for Dubois. LA needed to move money in the trade or in an subsequent trade to pay the player. You could see this move coming when Elliotte reported LA was taking a big run to get the player. Look at the math. Villardi is owed a new contract. The KIngs have a group of signed forwards. They needed to make the money work. Durzi was traded to make the money work. The Kings have some young D who are cheaper and one of them is no longer waiver eligible.

The people who cover the Rangers. Vince must get paid by word. He rambles on and on during his podcasts discussing players the Rangers can't afford. He writes these 10,000 word essays on these different players the Rangers can acquire. Mollie is another one. This morning she wrote Drury could trade the pick for immediate help but the Rangers can't afford to pay the player. The dumb fans read this shit and get mad when the Rangers don't acquire Toffolli. We can trade Goodrow and acquire Toffolli.
Why would we want Toffoli anyway? He's 31 years old, he just had a career season that he will never be able to replicate and he's a UFA after this season.

Good on the Devils for adding that player. They don't pick until #58. Let them keep throwing all their chips in and bust.

Barbashev is getting a 6-7 year contract for $5M-$6M. He is one of the few players who will get paid.

If they dump Goodrow, I think they sign Hathaway and probably Craig Smith (not on your list). Both are guys who played well for Laviolette

This team does not have a path to get better this off-season. They are stuck with this roster because they have no flexibility
It is June 28th man. Can we at least let free agency play out a bit…

Even if they do not add some big fish, they still have a lot of pieces already in the fold. They can add the role players that they need for the 4th line to have more of an edge at a cheap cost. Free agency is filled with them.

They need Kakko and Lafreniere to take the next steps, that is a big part of this.

Im drinking the Koolaid on a Goodrow buyout. Was against it because he is a player we can use but the cap credit the next 2 years is too enticing to pass up. I'd like Goodrow more if he was a more natural center and better skater (I also think he has not looked right since the ankle injury in the playoffs last year). Hathaway is probably a better player at this point anyway. Rangers should be all over him on July 1. Sheary, Smith, Eller too. Poach some of the Caps bottom 6 guys for cheap.

The Rangers are a 100 point team as it stands today. You'd think we were on the fringe of the lottery with how some fans talk about the roster. Do people want to win the President's Trophy or the Stanley Cup?

There’s no cap and there is no depth to trade. They can get lucky in FA but so can 31 other teams. They are running it back

What's kind of nuts, is the $3.6M + $200k in cap sacings could pay for:

Erne
Eller
Smith

They MAY have money left over after signing those guys as well.
That’s the thing when I think about Goodrow. I like him as a player, but his contract pays for a fourth line. You want to find a guy like Goodrow, not pay him.

At least Smith could potentially play in the top 9.

I'm happy for our 4th line to be Edstrom, Brodzinski, and Vesey.

Actually, now that I think about it, if Kostin isn't qualified, it could pay for:

Smith
Kostin

with some money left over.

AFP has Smith @ ~$1.25m and Kostin @ $1.5m

I'm not opposed to Brodzinski, I just like the idea of having him as call-up #1. Beyond him, the Rangers center depth in Hartford is shit so if they plug him in as 4C to start the season, they need to go sign and find at least 1, preferably 2 tweener centers who can mainly play in the AHL.

If we buy Goodrow out for savings and spend those savings on different grinders, I'm gonna hit the roof.
This x a million dude. We were clamoring for more proven playoff experience and were happy to have Goodrow. Is he overpaid? Sure. Is he overpaid next year and the year after? Not really esp for a competing team looking to add some juice and take the next step. That could be us or a team we flip him to.

Sometimes the best move is no move at all, as far as Goodrow is concerned I think that applies. I'd rather have him play between the 3rd and 4th line overpaid this year rather than taking on a what, $2.6 mil cap hit for 4 years. The same people calling for a Goodrow buyout are going to be miserable when $2+ mil is hampering us from being able to go that extra length for a UFA or afford one more RFA in a few years. Poor asset management.

Not to mention they will probably spend that money on another too long contract on another tweener bottom 6 guy who we really don't know what we're getting for the life of that contract.

That being said, I'm still on the trade him bandwagon (even if the market turns up next to nothing), even if it has to be for peanuts.

What are you expecting to get with that money?
An undervalued top 9 player. I like @NYR Viper's suggestion of Zadina, for example.

What 4th liners do over large samples is almost valueless. Any money that can be spent, especially when the cap is tight, should be spent elsewhere first. It's not like our top 9 has no openings.

This is with a trade of Goodrow for Zadina + 3rd
- I assumed Detroit would want to send $ back

In this scenario, Zadina, Smith and Kostin would be battling for the 2nd and 3rd line RW spots. May the best players win.

First call-ups would be:
Cuylle-Brodzinski-Othmann/Edstrom
Scanlin/Emberson/Harpur

Unfortunately, this is exactly what we will do with those cap dollars.

This is the first year in a very long time that we have $0 dollars in the Dead Cap/Buyout section of Cap Friendly. It is a really nice feeling. It would be great if we could keep that for a bit.

Yeah but have we tried a 'cap credit' in that section? Think about it...
