Goodrow is just overpaid for where he should be playing but he’s not a bad player. I think Drury envisioned him maybe at 3C at one point but we have Mika Trocheck and Chytil there. So now Goodrow is a very solid bottom six player but he’s just paid too much for the role he should have. You can use the 3.6 for someone up top or two players who can do his role, etc

If they don’t buyout Goodrow or trade him it’s going to be hard to even fit the current team under the cap, I don’t see how they can keep him even if they want to.
This. They need to move somebody with salary just to keep the kids, fill out the roster, and give themselves some maneuverability in season. Goodrow is the obvious choice.

I saw someone say watch the Rangers trade Lindy because they don’t want to buy out Goodrow

That would be like a team taking a 36 yr old 25M contract to get a stop gap SS when one of the prized prospects is ready it just won’t happ…

Well shit

I dont think Calgary had a choice with Toffoli. No one wants to play in Canada and if you look at their team make up they do not have any RFAs except Dube. If everyone who can leave as a FA in the next few years they will have a tough time signing guys to replace them thus trades are their best option. I honestly think Drury could make a move or 2 here.

Hanifin 2 mill retained for Lindgren.
Lindholm for chytil

Rangers could sign both next year if they move Trouba or Kreids. Calgary returns players who will both be there for the next few years.

Won't happen but Calgary with the Toffoli return looks desperate and I believe they want to try and complete instead of rebuild.
I think one of the hardest things for the flames is actually the arena. Everything else is meh. Might not be as good as place a b or c, but the arena is a joke. I think a case can be made that for the players mullet is better than the saddle dome at this point. It's so bad. Players spend so much in their rink and within the amenities of a team and the flames are like scrapping by 1990s nhl standards.

Chytil has some deficiencies as a center imo. Faceoffs, over committing in the dzone, etc...a lot of those would change with a move to the wing.
I'm not saying he's a 1c. I don't think Chytil is too weak defensively and with a coaching staff more focused on teaching and structure I think that aspect of his game will only improve. I just think it's criminal to force one of Trocheck or Chytil to 3c so we can have a fourth/third line tweener in the top six. Now, come post-TDL and the rangers can get more depth then it makes sense to send one of them down to center the third line.

So I did an experiment trying to see how they could keep Goodrow and ice a team..

Kreider-Zib-Panarin (this was very good in very limited time offensively)
Kids (get more ice time)
Good-Tro-Vesey
Cuylle - ? - ?

Miller-Fox
Lindgren-Trouba
Jones-Schneider
Harpur

Shesty
Halak

got 2.8M of cap for 2 4th liners with no spare forward

Is it possible? I guess

I just don’t see how they can keep Goodrow really tho and make the team better outside of the kids getting better and Lav making players buy in to a certain structure/gameplan

Only thing I have against Goodrow, other than Gallant thinking he was a top six player or even a 3rd line player, is his contract.

If he were making half what he's getting now and he were stapled to the 4th line like any coach with a brain would do, then Goodrow would be fine.
No, half is still too much.

I'm a simple man so I'd like to see the team keep it simple.

Sign:
Laf 2.5x2
Miller 4x4
Carpenter, Scanlin, Emberson, Lockwood 775kx2
Steven Santini 775kx2

Let camp shake out as it may. Couple of PTOs. Cuylleon the 4th line for sure. See if Othmann can take a RW spot next to Chytil or Trocheck. Blidh, Brod and a combo of Carp and Lockwood can provide 12th-13th forward service. I think Lavi will like Blidh and he will make the team. Spots in the NHL for players to win and contribute. Upward movement. Good for any company. Haha

This also gives us a great AHL team, which is something more important than people realize. Good teams feed good teams. It will also help develop the younger prospects that go there.
