I am just hopeful/worried that Gorton and his team won't make the necessary hard decisions at or before the TDL if the team is in or near a playoff spot on guys like Namestnikov, Fast and Kreider. Hopefully, young guys like Chytil, Kravtsov and others are showing they can fill those holes to ease that decision.

The worst scenario I would envision is the team being in a playoff position around the deadline and then not selling on those guys only to just miss the playoffs.
I understand that for Kreider, but I don't lose an ounce of sleep wondering if we missed on a 4th round pick for Names or Fast

If I were to outline a dream scenario, it would be that we see steady progress by our young talents, enabling us to move to expiring contracts for assets (picks, prospects, etc.), followed by a late-season, post-TDL surge that comes up just short of the playoffs.

We then win the lottery and nab a kid like Byfield.

Progress and more high-end fire power for the future.

Obviously real life is rarely that clean cut, but that would be the script I would want to write.

Easily the best possible scenario. I’d also think Trochek would look good between Kakko and Kreider but don’t see that happening at all.

In all honestly I just hope Gm Gorton sells at the deadline (Kreider, Names, Strome) and can pull off a hockey trade in the summer for either a steady LD for Trouba or a 2c if we don’t pick high enough

As much as myself and many here like millers potential I’d hate to force him into a top pairing role.

Strome looked invisible. I think we need to trade him before his value drops and make room for Filip Cthulhu.
before his value drops? He'd have to build significant value before we could trade him without an asset attached, without retaining max salary, or for something other than a Spooner. Our best bet on Strome is not QOing him after this season.

Out of the D Prospects that are in the organization. Here's where I view their upside:

Miller- Top Pair 5v5, Top PK Player. Responsible for shutting down the best players, and chips in 30 odd points without PP time.
Fox- 22 Minute a night 50 point defenseman in the Brian Rafalski mold.
Lundqvist- Slick skating 3rd unit player on the Rangers, but with higher long-term upside. Goal scorer among the lot, and settles in at 40 point range due to limited ice.

Rangers as an organization veer towards an uptempo system as the roster evolves.

shouldn't this go in the Around The NHL thread? this is not Rangers related. by year 4 that deal will look awful
Seems like a Kreider comparable, and I disagree. Year 5 a limited NTC kicks in and the actual salary dips down significantly. If we could find the room, I’d consider a deal like that for CK.

A few thoughts on the lay of the land.

1. We all know how our depth-chart on defense breaks down. Skjei and Trouba are here for a foreseeable future. More on them later. Staal has this and another year left. Fox and TDA has shown many many promising signs for the future, they are already there. On the farm we have especially stud prospect K'Andre Miller on the left and Nils Lundkvist on the right, as well as guys like Reunanen, Rykov, Lindgren, Robertson, Keane and many others that has potential.

2. So what does that give us from the perspective that we aim to become a contender?

Brady Skjei gets called out a lot, and have been criticized since last season. He skates well, he has size, and he is fairly skilled overall. I however don't have big problems with him. D's on poor teams are exposed, we have had a very poor team. We still don't have a good structure. AV employed a system that gave us an offensive punch by really pushing things defensively to force turn-overs with a very high pressure man-man defensive structure. That wasn't easy for Skjei or anyone else to play in. I think it still shows a bit in Skjei's game, the comfort level isn't quite there. Sometimes he stresses plays with the puck. But I just cannot see why he couldn't be able to settle down along with the rest of the team if we get to a level where we play a very strong game of hockey.

Jacob Trouba looks to be just what the doctored ordered, the right guy at the right place. I've for a long time argued that its a mistake to believe that size don't matter at all on defense anymore. Up front? Heck I think you can find good arguments for a claim that having a lot of size is basically a flaw for scorers. Smaller players just move better. Of course there are different roles, but in general.

But not on defense. Trouba has a big presens on the blueline, and it helps us a lot. I think that we should expect it to take a little time for him to settle in in NY too. Ds always need some time before they get going. We are not an easy team to play for, but he has started great.

I also think that there is every reason to believe that K'Andre Miller will become a very good NHL defender. Not much unlike Trouba, and possibly better. Its great that he is getting more time in College. I wouldn't even mind if he got to play there another year after this. But after that I don't think there will be long before he is ready for the NHL. Remember the players in this league is younger than ever, its a young mans game.

3. Bottom line, I think we got all we need and then some on the blueline. If there is one position I think we are a little weak -- its puck-moving ability on the left side. We only really have Reunanen there who is a clear PMD at LD. I thought TR was impressive as hell this camp, to be honest, but its not like we have a bunch of guys like that. The coming time I would like to see Gorton just keep building up the farm, but maybe not over-do it with LDs.

I also wouldn't mind if we looked more at like hard nosed younger Ds. Real crease clearers. PKers. Guys with an edge.

4. Up front things look a little different. The roles to fill are twice as many, you need a bigger mix. But make no mistake, we are certainly deep there too on the farm.

Ziba and Panarin will be here a long time. Buch is established now. Lemieux isn't a kid, he is a finished product but that still can keep growing his game. Besides them we don't have many vets locked up long term. Fast and Kreider might not be here long-term. Names and Strome hasn't impressed. But OTOH the kids are a bit further along, with Lias, Chytil and Howden already having played a considerable time in NY.

5. From my point of view we still fill out a future top 9 very nicely with a 3+6 set-up. Vets Ziba, Panarin and Buch+ kids Lias, Chytil, Lemieux, Howden, Kravy and Kakko. Behind them we are a bit empty though. And there are of course not a given that everyone will pan out, be healthy or fit all required roles we must fill.

6. The center position is of course a bit of a question mark. But I do think its important to not rush to evaluate it to early. Just look at the roller coaster we have had already. Lias was a top guy, a few weeks into D+1 Chytil overakes him and is Kopitar 2, Howden comes in and supposedly is a future 70 pts skilled center while Lias sucks, now Chytil is in the AHL, Lias possibly looking better than the other two all of a sudden, Howden is struggling a bit and so forth.

We could potential keep walking around in circles evaluating these guys for years to come. It takes time. And who knows what we might have from within and if there possibly have to be made a move or two. But -- I definitely don't think there is any point in going out to get 'a vet center' the coming years just to compete. If anything, I think that could set us back instantly.

This is it. I think Lias has the innate abilities. He's shown it in the past in every other level. He's not a downer, he takes criticism well, he takes responsibility as necessary. He's going to be a 2C on this team by the end of the year.

It's got nothing to do with age. it's everything to do with personality type. it's got nothing to do with the fact that Zib can't, but moreso that Lias can do it better, with a better effect on the team overall
