Can someone refresh my memory on what happens to the cap if we bury Smith in the AHL this year? Does that open up enough to sign ADA at his demands just to get this saga behind us?

He was a contributing factor to the Rangers not being very competitive in games last year
I would rather deal Buch and keep Kreider...contingent on Kreider being willing to sign a 5 year deal. I think Kreider’s style of game adds more diversity to the other types of players in the lineup moving forward. You have a ton of skill in Panarin, Kakko, and Kravtsov on the wings. You have skill in Zib and Chytil down the middle. You need a mixed bag. Kreider is a guy who goes to the net and is not a perimeter player. Andersson and Lemmy are also of that ilk. Kreider showed last night his speed and physicality is very much there.
I hope Buch has a fantastic year, increasing his trade value so that we can use him as a trade chip to get into the Top 10 of the 1st round. Maybe we package him with our 1st to move up further and get the Center we want for the future. I think Buch at his age would have more value to allow us to get into that top 10. Which we may need to do because IF we make the playoffs youre looking at our own pick being in the 20s.
I'd rather move both. I am not a fan, at all, of giving Kreider even a 5 year deal.
I do agree that the team could use a couple of players who relish the dirty work and can dig out pucks. I see that as a bit of a unique skill in this organization overall. In saying that, I feel that Lemieux and Andersson could be those types of guys. Perhaps they are able to make a move for another guy in that mold who can compliment their high skill forwards.
Panarin-Zibanejad-Kakko
______-Chytil-Kravtsov
Lemieux-Andersson-_____
______-______-______
That leaves:
Kreider
Buch
Howden
Fast
Nieves
Strome
Namestnikov
Those are the guys I see as either solid placeholders, trade chips or other.
Buch will have A LOT more value than a 'UFA to be', Kreider. It does make sense to keep Kreider over Buch IMO.
Gorton has options....
Can see a bunch of things out of just the first preseason game. The forwards will carry whatever success the team has this season. Defense could be a big problem. No ADA and Skjei getting first pair minutes is not a good way to start the season. That’s not even counting the wonder twin getting plenty of ice time.
Will be a lot of fun to watch but I’m seeing a punchers chance at Byfield vs. a playoff team.
Wut.I’ve had the longest dry-spell of crazy long shot hang-ups since the draft. Or wait it was the second BO-window when I wanted three of them.
Anyway I think I got a new one. From my POV it would make quite much sense for Gorton to give Kreider a monster 2 year deal.
Say 2x15m.
We trade/let go of Names and Strome ASAP. Buy out Staal and Smith next summer. That leaves us with about 66m in cap hit with a pretty set roster. Say 9 forwards and 7 Ds and 2 goalies. We can easily plug 2/3 of a 4th line with home grown cheap guys. The Cap should go up towards 83m.
Next year, the cap shouldn’t be an issue, neither should it be the year after. Remember in y2 or that monster deal for Kreids, Shatty’s big BO is off the books, Hanks contract is up, Girardis BO drops. Very few RFAs are up. We would have a ton of room.
Then 3y, all the top kids will have to sign new contracts. Kreider would be 31. Instead of getting 9m per as a UFA, the price should come down. But he already have 30m in the bank, maybe he would take 6m for 5 years or whatever. Time would tell. I think the big gain is having Kreider around these coming years anyway. Help the kids.
Tomorrow is the first day of waivers. Matt Beleskey. 12 days before the start of the NHL season.

You drinking again Ola?
But 15x2 and then 6x5 is 60/7 or $8.5m per.No, it’s brilliant as usual.
Why so short term? We have cap space the coming two seasons. After that we have to start to resign so many of the kids.
Besides
Why so much money? This is Kreider’s big payday. If he has a decent year and plays on that top PP unit he could have good stats.
But the older he gets, the less the teams will be inclined to give him a long term deal. So if we want him to take a 2-year deal — it must compensate him for the risk he takes.
Yup. You’re drunk.No, it’s brilliant as usual.

Your point about overpaying for a skirt deal is reasonable, even if the numbers are a bit fantastic. 9x2 or 8x3. Something like that might make sense. Kreider probably wouldn't do it though. But maybe it's just one of those things that's not meant to be. Which is fine too.I doubt Kreider will get less than 8.5m if he hit the UFA market, after boosting his stats playing on that top PP unit.
And there is no doubt that there have to be some sort of over compensation, because Kreider takes all the risk. If he gets big injury problems, that second contract could be a lot lower.
But I of course didn’t put much thought into the 15m number, not saying that 12m or 14m or whatever isn’t an option either.
