Lots of Reaves hate here. I don't get it. Reaves was instrumental in bringing this team together as a club that was both physical, and had each others backs.

The NYR w/out Ryan Reaves would be like sending a field trip of 7th Graders into Manhattan, via Subway without a chaperone.
One year of Reaves and Kakko has turned into a slayer in the offseason....

Alpha Kakko breakout next season.

Win the lotto and get the worse player. Hockey is different here.
Well, They had similar years last year, Kakko being injured aside. And similar playoffs aside from Newhook being scratched way more, so "worse player"? I disagree. I see way more upside in Kakko and hasn't Newhook had concussion issues? Or am I mistaken? In any case I would not trade Kakko straight up for Newhook. But that's me.

I was talking about Zegras... whom we would have drafted had we not won the lotto.

but on the bright side... Zegras would look shit here too.

I use it as a broad general term. 2C is a definitive box yet comes with no definition? What makes a 2C? Who's a 2C? What's the cutoff? Why isn't he a 2C? Middle6 Centers a dependent on their linemates. He had 39 EVP... Same as players like Elias Pettersson, Barzal, Bergeron and Strome.. Are they 2Cs?

The game has changed in that you do need a functional and capable top9. He's more 2C than 3C. He can do both. I do not expect him to lead this team offensively but he is the type of player we need.
wouldn't this same kind of open-endedness apply to a 1c as well? or a 1g?

if you have a true 1c then you know it.

if you have a true 1g then you know it

if you think you have a 1c then you probably dont, same as when teams say we have two starters. no you dont, you have two guys that arent good enough to be a clear cut starter.

someone else challenged me to list teams with 3c on par with trocheck and i listed a handful of them. he is a tweener in that mid 6 bc he isnt a true 2c.

is a guy like kadri a 1c, not a change (despite his contract season), but you know damn well he is a 2c.

Ah! Well I got that wrong. Right now yeah, I'd make that trade. I do wonder how it would look in two years though. I think he and Hughes are two players who developed more quickly.

Like I always say, line hierarchy completely falls apart under slight criticism anyway.

Everyone has Goodrow on the "4th line" in the mock lineup which I happen to agree with for whatever that's worth. At the same time, he was 5th in ice time amongst our forwards. Do you anticipate him falling from there to below 9th? Probably not. If he doesn't is he really a 4th liner? I don't know.

It's kind of a subjective characterization that doesn't mean anything.

Trocheck is here to be a fit on the Panarin line. It's the Panarin line. We know what its role is and isn't. It doesn't need a ranking.

I dont really agree with the regression angle. I doubt Kreider scores 50 again, and maybe Igor will have a slight drop off from his historic season, but the team played 3/4s of the season with Dryden Hunt, Julien Gauthier and Barclay Goodrow in the top 9 last year, as well as 87 combined games on D of Nemeth, Tinordi & Hajek. They also had no talented reinforcements ready in Hartford. And that's even before you factor in expected improvement from the kids who were on the team last year. The new coaching staff also wont have to go through much of a feeling out process.

We are still a very young team, in a division with some of the oldest teams in the league (PIT, WAS, NYI). We are in a good spot imo.
igor alone is part of the reason to expect regression, he won this team about ten games they had no business winning and most of it was early on with that putrid roster, but you will not have the strome and bread marriage early, there will be trials all over with laf figuring if he can be the top rw and then kravtsov and kakko trying to find their places on the middle rw spots. pp1 that they leaned on so much will be changed and need to find its footing again. there will just be a lot of adjustments here. they will be a playoff team but i think people should be prepared for some regression with the wins while they find their footing and determine what holes they need to plug. it is different with a more vet group having this kind of role adjustment, these are a lot of kids moving around in the forward group, 4 of your top 9 forwards are looking for traction with their position in the lineup with chytil the possible exception since he seems locked in again as the 3c.

He's nowhere near the best PMD in the biz, even Fox isn't a great PMD imo. He's maybe the best passer, but at actually carrying the puck up? Not even close
I don't get how the organization doesn't see it but we look so much better whenever Jones was in the lineup

This is so stupid lol.

Passing the puck up ice is moving the puck. Carrying it up is another way to do it.

Fox had by far the highest rate of attempts and success rate at getting the puck out of our end and with control. Considering that Lindgren almost never attempted to get the puck out, that’s pretty exceptional.

Key and funny enough, Trouba we’re the only other ones in the green.

i also think this points to the fact fox and lindgren just work well together and know how to play to each others strengths. lindgren is very good and moving/luring bodies away from fox and fox getting open to get the puck back and facilitate the zone exits. that kind of stuff doesnt show up in stats. zone exits sometimes are more about the partners being able to avoid the forecheck together in tandem then they are about just one guy doing it. hell, nemeth paired with fox for a couple games and fox couldnt get out of a wet bag bc his partner kept himself in bad position to be an option other teams had to respect or that he tossed grenades at fox for lane shifts on breakouts. the lindy fox pairing just works.

Signed Tkachuk for Panarin and Kakko, maybe throw in a d prospect...who says no?

Where do I sign? I did something similar in NHL 22 but for Brady Tkachuk.

Man it's boring aside from day 1 of FA. Still plenty of names out there and cash strapped teams can't do anything about it. Still surprised that Kadri is unsigned and JT Miller is still in Vancouver for now. Flat cap sucks.

Doubt anyone would take Gauthier. I think hes been shopped heavily to no avail.

Also doubt Reaves is moved. Hes got one year left. Is loved in the lockerroom. His presence on the ice does make a difference whether his fighting majors are down to a trickle or not.

I do like having Motte return but the way the cap is its very doubtful. Its also like a bonus.

They targeted both Trocheck and Carpenter for this reason, who will both be relied on heavily as penalty killers. Motte is also excellent here as a specialist but isnt needed at this point. There are only so many minutes to go around with others like Goodrow, Mika, Kreids etc who also PK.

So why make trades just to retain Motte when half of his value is already accounted for. Its likely best to leave a winger spot open for the young kids who will be a lower hit on the cap and go up and down. Assess the need later in the year, with injuries, etc. I really love Motte, but there are other players like him you can get if needed.

And then theres the other thing, Motte likely wont sign cheap on a short deal. Thats why he walked to test the market. Otherwise he may have been back already or still with Van.

Why McCarron? Is he gonna save us cap money somehow? Rather get a pick somehow that we can use at the TDL to grab some players like we did thhis past year.

not saying that this will happen, but:
Motte (if cheap), #13/14 McCarron, a mid level pick and some cap space is far better for the team both during the year and at the deadline than #12/#13 Reaves, Gauthier, no pick and no space.

There is a big difference in value between Schneider and Lundkvist.

Too much bias towards Schneider cause of his size and the fact that Gallant likes him.

Lundkvist is still a fine prospect. You are getting a different type of player with Lundkvist but I'm not convinced necessarily an inferior one.

By the way, still not an offensive defenseman, Lundkvist is very sound defensively in the same way that Fox is... smart and positionally.

Also Newhook had 33 points this season on a stacked Avs team. No goals and 4 assists in 12 playoff games. Scratched for the rest. He also doesn’t fit anywhere in the top 9

Newhook isn’t good. I don’t know why fans around the league think he’s valuable, Avs fans are ready to part ways with him
It was Newhook's first full season at age 21 and he scored .46 points per game. And he can play center, which we desperately need a young one or two of in the organization. He wouldn't fit in our top 9? Balderdash.

I'll give up our future second or third pair defenseman for him. We have a spare. We have Jones, Robertson, Skinner, etc.

Lol man
When young players underperform on our team the excuse is that our teams too stacked so they play a smaller role. When young players play well on other teams if the teams good they’re just playing well because they’re on stacked team, if their teams bad they’re playing well because they get to more opportunity.
