Please explain how creating an excellent top 6 ensures us not eventually winning a cup.

I would LOVE to know.

Kreider-Zibanejad-Kakko
Panarin-Chytil-Buchnevich
Lemieux-Howden-Kravtsov
Strome-Andersson-Fast

@ZuccsFluffierFluffer looks to me like we are good with the LW slots to be able to have both Kreider and Panarin.

In two years, cap will go up and we will have $26 million coming off the books. We can spread that around to our kids coming off ELCs and still be able to add a Defenseman via free agency / trade.

Kravstov has been much better as a LW than a RW. His stats as a RW in the KHL are pretty poor.

Kakko is effective all over so no worries there.

It's also very possible that a permanent move to wing is in the cards for one of Chytil or Andersson, maybe even both.

Tying up that much money (and roster space) is just a bad idea. I'd prefer that they keep both slots open unless they can get a second high pick/someone awesome drops to them for some stupid reason.

Plus its just unnecessary to tie up that much money in guys of that age at the moment.

Hearing rumors that Ryan Smyth may be in play though.

He and Sather go way back.

@Amazing Kreiderman true?

When you look at production based on where he was in the line-up, sure.

But to me, Kravtsov isn't a player who sticks to just 1 side of the ice. He goes to where the open ice is. I think this breakdown below isn't really indicative of Kravtsov being better on the left wing. I just put it out there since I did a similar breakdown of Kakko and someone asked me to do this for Kravtsov as well

Is Kreider an elite player? No. He will be 29 when his next contract starts. It will be long term. Want a lot probability of success? Sign a 29 year old non-elite player to a long term deal.

We’ve seen elite players not age well and become detriments to their teams late in their deals. What do non-elite players do?
If they can get Kreider at 6.5 million and without the no trade, then he can be moved at will.

And you wont get him for that. He and his agent know this will be his last big contract. He will get more then that and he will have a NTC in his deal.

Move him for a pick in the teens plus something else.

Re-Sign Kreider. 6 year, $6.5 million per.

Sign Panarin 7 years, $10 million per.

Prior to these, trade Vesey and Nams at the draft. Frees up the money for Kreider.

Kreider and Kakko on a line is bonkers
I also feel Zibby will score 40+ playing with those two. Kreider and Kakko/Kravstov

That looks amazing plus rest of 2019 and 2020 drafts. Crazy. Very exciting.

I'd like to see more moves:

Vesey, Fast, Names traded out as well. They are all pending UFAs. Build on those 2020 picks a season early. Use this off-season to build an identity around a young core.

Panarin/Donskoi-Zibs-Kakko
Kravstov-Chytil-Buch
Lias-Howden-Strome
Lemieux/Bellmare/Acciari/Hathaway/Donskoi

Carr-O'Regan-Brodzinski-Barber

That's 7 core young forwards playing in a given night (out of 12 forward roster positions... which is a majority). Plus Panarin. You get a legitimate energy line on the 4th, something that the team hasn't had much of since 2015. A bunch of 4A guys to insulate the farm, and NHL roster if kids need time in the minors.

Oh and you capture assets from moving out

Kreider- 1st rounder at the least. -$4.6
Vesey- 3rd -$2.3
Fast- 3rd -$1.8
Names- 3rd-5th depending on retention -$2M to -$4M

4 Trades. 4 NHL signings. 4 AHL signings.

Lots of moves, but the signings shouldn't be too hard, 1-way deals for the farmhands, throw them a couple of hundred thou as a SB if needed.

Bellmare- $1.9M 1 year. $1M SB- Sign him or Acciari
Acciari- 3 years at $6M. Bit of a stretch but you have to give to get. He's a really good 4th line center.
Hathaway- 2 Years $3.8M. $1M SB each year.
Donskoi- 2 Years $5.8M

Breadman probably comes in at $10M. Maybe he takes a discount. Maybe he ends up in FLA.

I don't disagree that a 7 year deal is a big risk. The game Kreider plays means he gets banged up and he's always been a bit streaky. That said, he's a 1st/2nd line winger whose speed still impacts the game even when he's not scoring. These very speedy wingers are just incredibly effective for puck possession and breaking down d systems.

As we remake and rebuild, at some point we need to pay attention to adding speed. Kakko, Zibby, Kravtsov, Chytil, Howden, Andersson, Strome, Namestnikov and even Panarin (if he signs w/ us) they're all average to above average skaters, but not speedsters.

I would argue that Kreider's value to us is higher than it is for many other teams. So, I think this Kreider decision is a real balancing act. I also think we can trade that contract in 2 years. If we trade him for a 14th or 15th overall it just may not be enough value for us. Keep in mind, we can trade him at the deadline and likely get a first in the mid-20s in a possibly deeper draft. Either way, we'd likely be getting a player that's 2 years away and may never reach Kreider's level. I think, ultimately what it will come down to is -- do we prefer keeping Kreider to shelter the development of the current crop of kids or do we trade him for futures that is likely 4 years from truly impacting the NHL roster? I think it becomes more clear if can trade Kreider for a 2nd top 10 pick this year, 2 1st rounders, or a mid-1st and a team's top 3 prospect. Teams like Buffalo, Nashville, Calgary, Winnipeg could all be in on a bidding war for Kreider in that scenario.
I really wanted Hughes and if we do end up with Kakko I would certainly like to pursue finding another player in the vain of a Hughes, Gaudreau, Kane etc
Chytil is a very fast skater though, certainly not just above average
