I wouldn't be surprised if Karlsson either signs with SJ or signs a short contract with TB to reunite with Hedman to try to win a Cup. TB is losing a lot of assets on defense and Karlsson's value isn't where it probably should be given all the injuries he's dealt with. I hope the Rangers stay far, far away from EK.

I think if Edmonton is going to move their pick they are going to be more interested in a quantity package of cost controlled assets than Kreider. Buch/Pionk/WPG 1st. We take some cap back (not Lucic of course)

They need depth and they need it now.

If Buffalo is going to move their pick, they are going to be the team interested in Kreider.

I don't see anyone else in the top 10 really being interested in moving their pick.

Arizona at #14 is really the only other team that is probably in the top half of the draft that would really be looking for immediate help over a pick without having to overpay.

Edit to add that Colorado would definitely be exploring options but they aren't desperate enough to make a move like the other teams. Would require an over-payment there as well.

I like how you throw Pionk in as if he would have any value in that sort of trade
Well, if you check my history, you’ll see I actually happen to be a Pionk fan (though I’ll readily admit his game fell off after the new year) and clearly so are the Rangers, given the PT he received, so I think he probably has more value around the league than the current mood of this board is willing to ascribe. I’d be willing to swap him out for ADA in said offer, especially in light of the likelihood of acquiring Fox, but again considering the current mood, I imagine most others on the board would riot at the idea.

Don't sweat the mob.

I think Pionk is a 3rd pair defenseman at best, and a top pair AHL guy at worst but that's me. I see him having a career somewhere between a Matt Gilroy and John Moore caliber player (not talking stylistically).

I just don't see him as a guy who moves the needle on a 4th OA. He's like the player equivalent of throwing in a 3rd rounder.

Fair enough. Agree to disagree on this one.

Actually, that was his response to people during the depression who didn't want government to try to do anything to stimulate the economy. They insisted that, in the long run, everything would just work itself out. Keynes felt that by the time that happened it would be too late to help most people.

Ok, I guess I remembered the quote wrong.

I'd have a hard time trading both the #14 AND the #19. I'd more easily trade the 14, a player + the Rangers 2nd + a later 2nd (say Dallas') to try to move up to the 8-9 range than trade both other firsts.

Maybe a team like Edmonton would consider:

#8 + Gagner (cap dump) for #14 + #37

Or something like that. Assuming the #37 could help the Rangers move up 4 spots to #10 on its own and then the $3m+ cap dump helps to move it another couple of spots. Perhaps the Rangers throw in someone useful like Fast or Vesey

Yup, maybe also Vesey but we get a 4th rounder.

Hey, just curious, John Gilmour had a monster AHL year, do Rangers fans expect him to transition to the NHL full time next year, and what type of contribution do you see him having at the NHL level? I think I saw one game of his last year, so it’s hard for me to judge...

He’s in his mid-20s now, and has dropped from the 1st to the 2nd to now the 3rd man up on D from HFD over the last three years. I think he sees the writing on the wall that he’s not in the Rangers’ rebuilding plans and leaves as an UFA.

people are getting greedy. We're not getting another top 10 pick.

Getting is the hard part.

But the asks and the exploration will definitely happen.

But it also comes down to expectations.

We’re not getting the fourth or fifth pick.

We’re also not getting a pick for a light price and holding on to all our picks in the process. The price would be something of value that makes us at least pause slightly.

Would you trade an 8th overall pick in a deep draft for an impending free agent when you have no realistic chance to compete? When you have very little talent beyond your top 2-3 players and little cap room to make changes? Do you see any world where Kreider, a guy who has played his entire college/pro careering the northeast, and facing unrestricted free agency resigning in Edmonton?

There is no chance Edmonton makes that trade straight up, much less adds to it.

I think there’s the potential intrigue there because of McDavid.

Having said that, the Oilers wouldn’t add to a deal and you’d have to give them something to offset their risk - like the Winnipeg first. This would also give them the option to flip Kreider at the TDL if things weren’t working out, and head into next year with two firsts.

Having said that, I think if we’re talking Edmonton, they might be more inclined to mention Buchnevich. I’ve also felt a straight trade of Kreider to Edmonton was less likely.

This sounds right. I think he can be an NHLer but probably not on a contender. He's a bit one dimensional. And I feel a bit for him because he chose the rangers as a free agent but it didn't work out.
That said, dems da breaks. And I think he and the rangers will part ways amicably. He should end up as a decent player in the NHL somewhere. Would have been cool to get some return though.

You know, it's funny. I've watched Hayes in Winnipeg, both in the regular season and so far in the playoffs, and I'm just as hesitant as ever to go down the path of a long-term contract with a movement clause.

He's a good player, at times a very good player. But I feel like his next contract is going to pay him to be closer to a great player, and I just feel like that's a high probability for disaster.
Classic case of a player who turns to mush with the big primetime deal. Not saying he doesn't deserve it. He should get what can. But that's pro sports. Guys get paid and things change.
