The entire premise was Bergeron at the same price as Copp. It's not in the same stratosphere as Dark Ages thinking. It's literally the best short-term fit for a cup contending team to try and take the next step.
Incredibly unlikely that Bergeron would take a discount to leave Boston - but few better fits in the league to get you through the short-term cap crunch while remaining in the upper echelon of the league that the Rangers now exist in.
It's very obvious that a long-term solution is needed at Center, possibly multiple - but there is more than one way to skin the cat. They're not necessarily going to find the 22-year old unicorn that fits in perfectly with both windows right away.
There's a better chance that they NEVER find that player - than of them finding one. Bergeron would be the ideal short-term solution - while also giving you more years and chances to find that unicorn.
There's the small little detail that Bergeron said he's either returning to the Bruins or retiring. Kind of blows all of the above up.
