Copp will also cost (at least) twice as much as Stastny per year.

Who else are you getting to be an upgrade at that price?

Don’t give the guy that might need hip surgery or the guy with multiple reported concussions a five year deal with a number over 5, you don’t need to double down because you traded picks for Copp.

This organization doesn’t need a big contract on the books for a late 20’s player who isn’t elite.

It's funny that we occasionally think of the 94 team as a grizzled veteran group but it was no 2002 Red Wings.

A lot of the oldest guys were just 32-34 years old. Lowe, Anderson, Larmer, Wells, MacTavish. The old guard. Many retired just a couple seasons after.

Panarin, Zib, Kreider will be in that age range over the next 2-4 seasons.

Still not seeing how we address 2C without giving out a contract the team has no business handing out considering the cap crunch that's in store for next year. They can't shed any of the big contracts realistically as Trouba and Kreider have NMC still, Goodrow's contract is loaded in the middle and back end and thus has no appeal to an Arizona type, and guys like Panarin, Zibanejad, Igor, Fox, etc are obv going nowhere.

I really think the best course of action still is try to add Stastny on a 1 year deal to bolster overall center depth with Chytil basically trying out at 2C for the 1st half of the season or dealing Nils for a young center that's also under control cap wise. They can always try and bolster 2C during the season and towards the deadline but I just don't see the path to signing a Copp, Strome, Trocheck, etc without seriously hamstringing this team next season when it comes to locking up the future.

If LA offered Byfield for Kakko would you do it?

1) Use Kakkos current/future cap to offset Copp at 5+ years as a RW/FO specialist?
2) Resign Vattrano for 2 years.
3)Give Kravtsov a chance and path to the top 6 to put-up-or-shut-up.

Go Zibba, Chytil, Byfield, Goodrow, Roons as our Center corp for now. ~Maybe~ take a step back for one season with Chytil/Byfield as our 2/3 combo but take two giant steps forward the next 4-5 years before Zibba ages out.

unless he looks horrible Jones should really make the team next year. he has the skating and instincts right now to do it and we desperately need someone like him from the backend.

I thought he was NHL ready last year and still don't get why Nils got in over him.

I would like Jones-Schneider to be the pair with Braun as the 7th who gets about 35% of the 82 games. Heck he may get 50%-60% of games if there are injuries, which there always are. I just dont know what Braun would cost on a 1 year deal if he was willing to take that.

I was just playing with the numbers in CapFriendly. It doesn’t work unless Stastny takes a paycut by about $1.5-$1.75 million aav from where he was last season and we ship out Hunt, with Reaves as the only extra forward. Also would mean not having Braun back.

I do want to add more depth at Center in the Bottom 6. Guys I think they could fit would be Helm, Boyle, Sturm, Carpenter, Stepan, Brassard, Rask, Cousins, and Larsson. Narrow that list down to the guys who provide the best combo of checking/PKing/Faceoffs. All situational play. Pretty much all of those guys have had experience at Center and the wing which provides versatility.

Ryan Carpenter is UFA Turk knows him from their time in Vegas. I can see him being a target and good at faceoffs physical and is good along the boards and would not cost much to sign him. I would not mind Cousins. Always been a fan of his. Underrated player

I like cousins & Larsson the most of his list. I think bringing in a guy like that would be at the expense of re-signing motte though
