So the Capitals from 08-09 to 14-15 were mediocre? They only made it past the 1st round 3 times. That's a ridiculous standard. Sometimes really good teams don't get the job done in the playoffs.

"Can" change things. Not will or that they will deviate from their plan anytime soon. the 2020 draft is going to blow this one out of the water. It will pay untold dividends to be bad again for another year (which they will be) in order to secure a player in the top 10 of that draft.

The Capitals drafted 1st and 4th overall and established a core and then won the cup so that argument isn't really valid. There's a difference between "sometimes not getting the job done" and "NEVER getting the job done." The Capitals got it done. The Wild? Not so much.

The process just netted them the 2nd overall pick in the draft. It has seen improvements from the youth at pretty much every level.
Today they made some signings, they are going to change the AHL coaching.
In a couple months they are going to draft #2 and have another 1st with still multiple picks to be used one way or another.
I'd stick with the process for at least another year.

Were gona be a bad team again next year? Draft hasnt happened yet. Offseason hasnt started but hey were gona be bad again next year.
And the best part is to tank on purpose with the HOPE we end up with the number one pick. Because that has worked out so well for the bottom 3 teams in the standings the last three years right? Laughable.

We're picking 2 this year. It's clearly working. Jersey finished 3rd and won the 1st overall.
Also, how are you fixing this defense to make the team better next year? This team will also be starting the season without Zuccarello and Hayes. Kreider has a high chance of being traded. Tell me, how is this team going to be BETTER next season?

Yes it will.
It allows to the team/kids to play in meaningful games.
A winning culture and attitude is implemented.
A coach like Quinn, who demands 100%, is more effective/tolerated when winning games.
The draft lottery is just that, a lottery. We could have MTL type of success next year and win a top3 pick. We were suppose to lose the last game of this season and tank... How'd it turn out? You do not worry about things you cannot control. Going into next season with the 'mindset' of lets tank for 1 more year, is bad management.

The kids will play a lot more meaningful games when they are a part of better teams, which will happen when they acquire their own home grown, elite talent.
It's not bad management. Gorton himself acknowledged that the teams that win draft players at the top of the draft. You don't get there without being bad.
Offseason hasnt started yet. Plenty of time to find these answers in the coming months. Maybe they do trade for Trouba. Maybe Hajek supplants himself as a Top 4 steady defenseman next year. ADA took steps forward this past season. Skjei improves his game. Kreider hasnt been traded. They bring in an elite forward. Add Kakko and Kravtsov. The team could be better. Nothing has been determined yet.

There are two things that would both need to happen, and could legitimately happen, to make this team better next season.
1. Georgiev or Shestyorkin could have a 23 year old season like Lundqvist did.
2. Kakko/Hughes or Kravtsov can have a rookie year like Pettersson did.
If both those things happen, we’ll finish around 10th from the bottom. Big ifs, but not really out of the realm of reality.

And maybe if they did the lottery balls would have bounced another way and we would have picked first. The lottery results aren't pre-determined. You put yourself in the best possible position to get the results. Even if you don't win, you pick in the top 10.

*More 5v5 ice time for Shattenkirk (yes) and Smith (yes).
Don't sign terrible players like McQuaid.
See if any of the rookies (Hajek mostly) stick and make a difference.
*I know the response to this is gonna be that Smith/Shattenkirk are bad which is why it was a waste of my time to even make this post.
