That's not true. Rangers had 62 points in 63 games at the deadline. They ended up getting 16 points in the remaining 19 games. While not as big of a drop as I think a lot of people expected, they still did perform worse.

I meant in regards to the sell-off last season. We had more pts this year than we had last season.

Just for the record, I was just busting RB with that post.

But I do not think Maloney totally was busting TDA like it sounded. He did say that he thought TDA would get sufficient support to fulfill his potential. But its obvious that Maloney is a big Shatty guy, he talked about there being a numbers game on the right side in relation to TDA. Really?? Who goes from TDA/Shatty/Pionk? TDA? Get real.

If Shatty is still a Ranger on Day 2 of the draft we shouldn't be looking for a president, the hunt should be focused on finding someone who fill the opening we have at the GM position because Gorton should be fired on the spot.

Some uncle Larry for your Sunday morning:

Carolina is demanding a first-rounder in return for the rights to Adam Fox, Slap Shots has been told by several parties. But it is very, very early in the process — in which the Hurricanes’ leverage diminishes almost daily, with the Harvard defenseman having the option to hit the open market as a free agent in 2020.

See ya in 2020 Adam!

Calgary, tied for second overall with Boston entering Saturday, or the Islanders as the NHL’s biggest surprise, with the Kings, Devils and maybe the Wild as the league’s biggest disappointments.
Though the Jets and Predators, they weren’t quite as anticipated, either, were they?

The only person that was surprised about how bad the devils were this year was you Larry, who earlier in the article was lamenting Lou not being the Ranger's president.

Cant that Jets pick slide down to 19 if a bunch of things break the Rangers way? Like the Jets lose in the first 2 rounds and 3 teams below them in the standings make it to the conference finals?

Ideal situation Jets lose in round 1, Dallas makes it to the conference finals along with say Carolina and Vegas.

And Tampa wins the Cup and Zucc re-signs with the Stars and we win one of the lotteries.

"At this point, though, with the Sabres out of the playoffs for the eighth straight year despite eight consecutive top-eight draft picks (including a first-overall and a pair of seconds), Eichel still seems more an innocent bystander swept up in ownership meddling." - NYP Brooks

Need more than tankathoning to build a team it seems.

What do people here think of bringing in Wayne Simmonds? Now before I get laughed off the board or boo'd out of the building, I know he has reached the power forward age equivalent of 27 for rock stars (well technically he's 31 in August) but if the point isn't to sign guys to long term obnoxious contracts, paying him like $4 million for two years isn't the worst idea. He's a pro and competed hard. Leader. He can mentor the kids.

I see it very similar to what Propsal and Fedotenko did for the last group.

Simmonds of a few years ago, sure. Next year's edition? No thanks.

Like good management and an owner who stays out of the way?

Without even getting into free agency and trades, their drafting outside of the first round has been abysmal.

In many ways it must be especially disappointing for Sabres fans, because for years that was one area where Buffalo was one of the better teams in the league.

@Ola , getting fired? you’re exaggerating again. Yes, there’s a problem with 3 expensive defenseman on the roster that should be moved. Shattenkirk? He’s the only RD and if Gorton is not bring anyone back, who’s Shattenkirk blocking on the right? On the left Staal is a fixture who’s the likeliest to stay the length of his contract and Smith’s problem was “solved” by playing him at forward. Hajek and Lindgren will get a chance to rotate when everyone is healthy.

Not ideal but the situation is workable until Gorton finds a trade partner that will take one of these high priced D.

A team will overpay him and we do not want that team to be us.

It's amazing, too, because most (if not all?) of their top 8 picks dating back to 2012 are still playing for the Sabres and all are in the NHL (save for the 2018 pick). They all "made it" and the Sabres retained them all and they still can't put together a team to squeak into the playoffs.

It’s funny, I guess I hadn’t realized just how bad their drafting outside the first was. I knew Edmonton and Colorado were lost causes in that regard, but I was surprised to find that most promising second rounder they’ve had in recent years was back in 2014, and he’s currently playing for us.

Beyond that, I want to say it’s been almost a decade since they took someone who’s played more than 100 games for them outside the first.

I just don't get why people keep saying Tankathon doesn't work when it's been proven over and over that it does.

We're going to do this all over again next season anyway. Maybe a full season without Hayes, Zucc and Kreider will help us see the true way.

Getting Lafreniere, Gunler or Lundell next year would be amazing

If that’s his true desire why would he sign a contract that could be moved to Arizona tomorrow?
Then apparently it's just not that important to him. This team cannot afford to be saddled with an albatross of a contract at a point that they are ready to truly compete for something meaningful.

I don't get this notion that the Rangers have never rebuilt before. That's just untrue. They did it when The Cat took over in the 60s, they did it from 1975-78, they sort of did one following the 1985 season, they did it in 04, and now.

There were also retools like when Herb Brooks took over in the early 80s, when Neil Smith took over in 1989 (and he had a lot of Patrick's previous picks to play around with because those NCAA kids all turned pro around 88 or 89), from Torts to AV, and then recently before the letter went out.
