I’m not moving kreider now. I’m adding. Kakko Panarin Tyler Myers Kravtsov and Adam Fox in

Vesey Namestnikov Shattenkirk Claesson out.

Let’s get back in this thing

Our defense should be fine in a year or two. We have enough dmen prospects we should be able to fill it out around Skjei,DeAngelo and yes Pionk.
Well, if the point is to sign Panarin to go for it now and worry about paying the young guys later, I don’t see how they’re going to make and real noise with their defense as is. If that’s the strategy and logic moving forward, Karlsson should be the guy they sign, not Panarin

So assuming rangers draft kakko, who is the team going to target in free agency if anyone at all? What is the ceiling for this team next year? Sad to say after watching every single minute of rangers games my entire life, I really dont watch the sport anymore after theyve cut back on the aggression and fighting that made the product what it was. I did watch a few games at the end of the year as the claude’s kid was sean avery 2.0 and really fun to watch

I think patience needs to apply.

Primes of the players is what I'm interested in. I do not expect their best prospects to hit them until they have at least one, if not more like three nearly full NHL seasons to their credit. 2021 and beyond.

I think they'll likely add some toughness, cheap short term toughness as that develops, much as they did this past year while their own more internally grown toughness emerges. Would not be surprised to see some non 1st round picks this and next year used on prospects who show some of that trait as long as they can play too, similar to claude’s kid.

I would hold on to Kreider until the deadline next season. I think having Kreider helps stabilize things for the young roster they will have next season. Panarin is still a no for me, without knowing the future of the CBA and the expansion draft, I rather keep the flexibility and keep building the young talent. Get another good pick in 2020 and I think Rangers are in business to be a good team in the future.

Wouldn't people rather try for Karlsson given our train wreck on defense than another winger?

Onto the defense. This is a bit uglier, and I don't think there is much salvage value on some of these guys. It's more about roster management in terms of the minutes a guy can play versus trying to save this. Because.... you really can't in one off-season.

The forwards are an easier bunch because you have shorter contracts, and the guys have proven that they can play in effective roles at various times. The cap hit and commitment is easier to work around, but that's not the case with the defense.

Skjei-Karlsson
Staal-DeAngelo
Hajek-Shattenkirk
Connauton

Smith Bought Out

  • He can Girardi overlap this year and next with G at 3.6 and Smith at 1.1, and it alternates next year. Then it's $1.1M each from 2021-2023. That's palatable.

Pionk to EDM for Kemp & 2021 7th Round pick

  • Kemp is a local kid that plays at Yale, and made the US WJC. He is well known by the Rangers.
  • EDM gets an NHL defenseman for Two 7th round picks.
Karlsson

  • 6 Years at $10M. It's a risky signing sure. But it's also Erik Karlsson. The Rangers will be able to absorb both Panarin ($10.5M) and Karlsson with the number of ELCs they have, and moving out Staal and Shatts the following off-season works just fine.
Load up on 2020 picks this summer, and you are wide open to have the accumulation of youthful assets continue, but you get the stars this off-season.

Cap will need to be at $83.5M this coming year for this to work, with discounts from Karlsson and Panarin.

Stars need to align a bit with all of the trade scenarios.

Signing both Panarin and Karlsson isn't impossible, but it is going to take a lot.

I think the Rangers can contend for a playoff spot with all of the above moves.

Karlsson is going to drop off at some point, with that said I'd probably let some other team sign him, if he holds up even just okay, trade for him when that team realized their build was not working with him, depending on how much they retained or sent along with, in a way, same for Panarin.

IMO unless he's got a major leg injury, I'm not worried about Karlsson aging. IMO he'll age a lot like Marleau. It's about the skating ability.

The guys that wear out are the guys that lose their legs. Karlsson is a next level skater. But if the legs aren't there, then you would worry.

I'd only take Karlsson on a very short deal (2-3 years) - which doesn't help us or him, so it won't happen. He's elite but definitely not with "our timeline" as the phrase is around here.

IMO, if Jacob Trouba becomes a real possibility, he should be the Rangers target.

Kakko changes the game for this organization. His ceiling is an elite, two-way 80-point first line winger. There is now an abundance at forward (Vesey, Namestnikov) and extra draft selections, which the organization could turn into another defender (Adam Fox) or two.

If Gorton decides to spend money in Free Agency, go after the 25-year old top-pairing defender. Even if you overpay a bit, it will be worth it because within two years several other contracts come off the books -- and who knows if the salary cap rises again in the next few seasons.

His skating already isn’t what it once was, because he’s had ankle problems.

Kreider to EDM for their #8?

Take Dach/Turcotte/Zegras.... Tempting, if they were to be game

Funny you say that...David Pagnotta of the Fourth Period was on NHL Network Radio and suggested that pick might be in play to add someone to help the current team.

I can't see them moving it for a guy with 1 year left.

Plus Kreider has a limited no trade and probably wouldn't extend there.

I'm a little bit more open to Panarin now. With that being said, I truly think the wiser and smarter move is holding off and playing the long game here.Defense is still a tire fire. After next years draft with potentially more top picks, the Rangers could be where the Leafs were a few years ago with possibly even more. The Rangers have the assets to trade for anyone they want in the coming years.

I think they’d want to know Kreider is signed beyond next season.

But, for laughs, if that’s on the table, yeah I make that trade. Because I like the odds of one or Dach, Turcotte, Zegras, Cozens or Byram being on the board.

If we land Kakko -- I would not move Kreider at all. Imagine the identity this team could have -- size, speed, skill and a heavy game -- of the top 6 with Zib, Kreids, Chytil, Kakko, Kratsov and beyond that Lemieux, Boo, Smith after that. Maybe Fogs or Getts becomes an NHLer down the road.

I think this could quickly turn into a version of the Kings and Ducks teams from 5 years ago. Especially in a league with smaller and smaller D. We could really wear some teams out. Dream scenario is to move Vesey and bring back Hagelin for 3rd/4th line duty. Hagelin, Lemieux with Strome/Andersson/Howden in the middle would create havoc after heavy top 6 group. 4th line would be one of those centers w. Vlad and Boo. Or maybe keep Smith as 4th line F? This also might accelerate our need to move out Shatty. Just imagine if K'Andre comes over the following year. We could have the youngest/biggest team in the league. Maybe since this is Gorton it's a modern day equivalent of the Bruins best teams from the last decade. I can dream can't I?
