I have the opposite thought
Kappo won't be a star right off the bat
And in 4 years when we have to pay chytl krav kappo etc we won't afford them all with a declining panarin eating 11+ million
The question is can the "kids" be in their prime and win us a cup before this scenario happens?
I'm not too sure because our young D is a little further away from being in their prime

That is why you go for it right away - before you have to give these guys huge long term deals.

They have too many centers in the system. I'd rather them not just try to turn them into wingers.
There's practically no such thing. Certainly not in the Rangers case.
Their trade value is also questionable at best. If I were another organization I'd be asking why they're giving up on them at 19 and 20, and with good reason.

It actually pushes me further away from Panarin, to be honest. If you're looking at Kakko/Kravtsov as your top two RW's for the next 5+ years (holy crap) and Kreider, Buchnevich, and Chytil all in the mix to fill out the two LW positions, do you really need Panarin? I don't think it's wise to invest $11m in another winger.

Plus there's that whole issue of the defense still being a train wreck. A train that was carrying dumpsters full of used diapers. And it's all on fire.
I'd trade Kreider and sign Panarin. Plus Buch is much better at RW.

I can see the logic in that, but I feel more comfortable signing Kreider for less money and seeing how the roster shakes out after another season. Kakko and Kravtsov are both playing against men, but I want to see how they fit in with the group before adding another body to the mix. Especially a body that we might not even need going forward who is in all likelihood a depreciating asset.

Could not. Agree. More.

If Kakko provides that much immediate impact at right wing, why pony up $11m at the same spot?

And defense gets worse before it gets better. Baby steps. Don't spend the money too fast.

I think a big free agency is incoming and can see see a prospect or two traded in salary dump type trades. The Rangers stepped in shit today. They're gonna end up with a player worth building around and even if they move some players they'll still have a deep group of prospects.

There's less money available than it looks like. You can get one big guy only if you bridge all the RFAs, and that just gets you in trouble 2 years from now. No need to think short term.

Forward moves. Keep the rebuild going by accumulating picks, and clearing space, but sign free agents to change the culture, and fill roles. Trading guys for 2020 picks is like trading the rentals early, but for a lesser price to gain the cap space.

Panarin-Mika-Kakko
Buch-Chytil-Kravstov
Lias-Howden-Strome
Bellmare -Acciari -Hathaway

Brodzinski, O'Regan, Carr, Carpenter.

The 4 "13th" Forwards should all get One-Way deals to insulate the AHL line-up and the NHL line-up if the kids need time in the minors. The Rangers can afford it. Give them a $250K bonus if it helps. The Rangers need to get creative with their contracts.

I would give the 4th line $1.7M-$1.9M. With a $1M SB. Front load the deals to make it attractive. 1 Year for Bellmare, 2 for Accriari, 2 for Hathaway.

A guy like Filpulla would be a good add too. But am not sure how much that would run. Getting a Finnish defensemen to billet Kakko will work too.

Trades

Kreider & 3rd to ARI for the 14th Overall Pick & Kevin Connauton.

  • Let Stepan & ARI talk to Kreider first. Get a number for his extension. The effective tax-rate in NYC for Kreider's income bracket versus ARI is a savings of ~3.25%. Not a ton of savings, but there are ways around that.
  • If the deal needs to be a package, then so be it. ARI might be set on defense, and has a lot of salaries kicking in next year. They will need to make the playoffs to not bleed a lot of money. Rangers can take Kevin Connaugton off ARI's hands to save them some cash, and let Claesson walk.

Vesey to EDM for a 3rd round pick.

  • Helps both teams. Rangers get cap space, and EDM gets an NHL winger. No role for Vesey imo that would help the Rangers in the future unless he's traded out as a rental.
  • This is a culture change deal that offers more value to the Rangers than a 3rd. It's a great value pick up for EDM. A favor returned for Strome.
Fast to a team for a 2020 3rd/4th Round Pick & 2020 7th Rounder
  • Fast can be retained if guys like Hathaway or Acciari aren't signed. Lots of miles on Fast, and I think he can come back be a good veteran on the 4th line, but you need cap space to draw some free agents, trading out Vesey & Fast helps with that.
  • This is more about building an identity with the 4th line. The Rangers haven't had this since 2015. Grinders who get their jobs and grind. It's a change of scenery for Jesper, and he's going to be a value add to a team like the Stars, Sharks or any middle of the pack playoff team.
Namestnikov (40% retained) to a team for a 2020 3rd/4th & a 2020 7th.
  • Don't care where he goes either, but an be retained if guys like Hathaway, Bellmare, Acciari aren't signed.
  • Vlad has played well. He's not a castaway imo. Fast I'm more worried about since the skating legs looked a bit off.
  • Clears up space. This is more about building an identity with the 4th line. The Rangers haven't had this since 2015. Grinders who get their jobs and grind. It's a change of scenery for Vlad, and he's going to be a value add to a team like the Stars, Sharks or any middle of the pack playoff team.

Really fun exercise you did here, and always love your lawyerly clarity - but I'm not sure how realistic it is...For one, I think Subban is entrenched in Nashville....The Kreider deal I could absolutely see, during in the Maloney years...and if we have 4 1s, that's a near guarantee we package and move up.

*Being selfish, I'm going to request for you to run this again following tonight's lottery.

*Being selfish part 2, I'm going to request for you to do this monthly.

@Ola Kakko time. Requesting you to do this again.

I think tonight's news increases the chances of the Rangers moving Kreider. Especially if the Rangers are confident they can sign Panarin. Any conversation with Arizona only starts with #14 -- from there include a player and a 2020 conditional pick and you may have something. If the Rangers could acquire #14 and package it with Winnipeg's (likely) #22, they could have a second top ten pick.

So assuming rangers draft kakko, who is the team going to target in free agency if anyone at all? What is the ceiling for this team next year? Sad to say after watching every single minute of rangers games my entire life, I really dont watch the sport anymore after theyve cut back on the aggression and fighting that made the product what it was. I did watch a few games at the end of the year as the claude’s kid was sean avery 2.0 and really fun to watch

Agreed, I think a Kreider trade is frankly inevitable.

I was on board with getting Panarin but with the move up to 2 and us probably picking an elite winger in Kappo, I'm good without him. This really fills out our top 6 especially if we keep Kreider, which I feel we will do now.

i know that the contract will be awful but now that the impossible has happened and we have a top 2 pick damn i want panarin...

top 6 of zibanejad, panarin, kreider, kravtsov and hughes/kakko
