Not at all. I'd wait until the summer to weigh all options. See who makes it to UFA. Different players may be available for trade. It is an issue that does need to be resolved by opening night of 2022, though.

I can't believe that people are advocating for Chytil whom has looked like a lost puppy this year and increasing his role on a team entering a new contender window.

I'm advocating for Chytil over making a bad decision. If Chytil begins next year as the #2 center, he doesn't have to end the year as the #2 center. The team should be good enough that we can take the time to figure it out. If he isn't the solution, we can explore other options again. If the right player comes along between now and the summer, by all means make the deal. Just don't make a deal for a guy simply because there are no better options at this time. We can afford to be a little patient.

Agree.

In the interviews after firing Gorton, Dolan himself said he expected the Rangers to be aggressive when star players become available.

Do you have a link to the interview with Dolan?

I remember reading Dolan thought Rangers management should have made a move at the deadline last season. The team wasn't that far out of a playoff spot. Gorton didn't make a move. He didn't want to trade for a rental. Almost all of the trades were rental deals. Someone(Carp) reported Gorton had a deal on the table but he did not make the deal. I have always wondered if Sam Bennett was that player. He wasn't a rental. The price wasn't crazy. A 2nd and a prospect who was a 2nd. Calgary wanted to move the player.

The Rangers have always pursued star players. That has never been an issue.

Dolan should worry about his basketball team.

Chytil 2C

And I do like Strome there. I don’t like paying 5M for Strome there. We got him off the scrap heap and it’s worked for cheap. Now that time is up and we should be looking to do it again.
Strome is on a 4.5m dollar a year contract..why is that cheap but resigning him for 5m 2 years later isn't?

Howden is shooting at 24%+ right now. If he shot at the the 8.1% rate he did his rookie season, he'd have 3 goals and 9 assists. Over 68 games, that would be 6 goals and 18 assists--his rookie season he had 6 goals and 17 assists for us in 66 games. He's a mediocre bottom six center that his having good luck this season after having awful luck last season (3% shooting). Nothing has changed with him.

The more I think about it, the more I doubt Miller will be an NYR, at least any time soon.

I’m not sure I see why Vancouver would move Miller. Are they rebuilding? Maybe at most re-tooling? Their roster has a good bit of young talent, I don’t know why they would strip it down too much. Presumably, they sold Pettersson on a plan to win when he re-signed last fall…given that he will need another deal in 2 seasons I doubt they want to bottom out too much during that time. And even if Miller requested a trade or they view him as an expendable asset, unless Drury is offering Schneider or something even better, would the value be so different for Vancouver next TDL?

I probably am one of the few people who would love to add Miller to this roster. But I’m not sure I see it happening. Tin foil hat time but I wonder if the Miller rumors are a smokescreen to either get Strome to agree to a more team-friendly deal or to keep the price down on a Hertl rental.

That's what I'm thinking.

I'm guessing his list of players who are in play from the Rangers is just what he's hearing from other sources as to what pieces are in demand from the Rangers and Kravtsov bc eveyone knows he's getting moved. I don't think this info is from the Rangers at all.

Have to think Schneider is untouchable at this point with how he's played, if he wasn't already.

Kakko should be very close to untouchable because not only has he played better than his numbers indicated and he's still so young with potential, but he will be very cheap on his next deal which we need. Kakko would only be moved in a deal to bring in a star player. If they weren't moving Kakko or Schneider to get an Eichel deal done, they're not going to do it to get JT Miller.

Lundkvist and Chytil should both be listed as pieces potentially in play from the Rangers.

Lundkvist, Chytil and Kravtsov. What can the Rangers get for those players? Throw in the 2022 first round pick. Too bad Chychrun isn't a center. His contract at $4.6M at three more seasons would fit the Rangers cap.

Karlsson and Miller are practically the SAME AGE. Karlsson makes slightly more than Miller now, but is signed for 5 more years @ $5.9m. What do we think Miller is going to ask for on his next contract and what is the term? 6-7 years @ $7.5-8m? That's going to be a rough contract that starts at 31 years old.

Let's look at even strength production because a team with Kreider, Zibanejad, Panarin, Fox and Laf/Kaako is probably mainly going to need to produce at even strength and limited PP time.

Karlsson
2020-21
39 points in 56 games
54% FO
30 points at even strength
+3.1 CF% at even strength
1.0 goal per 60 at even strength
1.3 assist per 60 at even strength
0.7 primary assist per 60 at even strength

2021-22
17 points in 32 games
49.8% FO
13 points at even strength
+5.4 CF% at even strength
0.6 goal per 60 at even strength
1.0 assist per 60 at even strength
0.8 primary assist per 60 at even strength

Miller
2020-21
46 points in 53 games
53% FO
27 points at even strength
+0.5 CF% at even strength
0.8 goal per 60 at even strength
1.2 assist per 60 at even strength
0.8 primary assist per 60 at even strength

2021-22
46 points in 45 games
54.3% FO
24 points at even strength
+2.6 CF% at even strength
0.9 goal per 60 at even strength
1.1 assist per 60 at even strength
0.6 primary assist per 60 at even strength

Based on the price to acquire and contracts, I lean towards Karlsson

I do not want JT Miller but you bring up Karlsson and honestly, he has fallen off a cliff this season. Not sure why that is but he is not the same as he was. I have serious doubts he will ever be the same while having to have him signed for another 5 years at nearly 6m per till he is 35. Im just not to interested in.

Seravalli: Trade Deadline War Room - Metropolitan Division Objectives - Daily Faceoff

New York Rangers

Primary Objective: Top 6 right wing
Secondary Objective: Reliable checking line winger
Briefing: Here’s the imbalance on Broadway: Artemi Panarin and Chris Kreider on the left side, Alexis Lafreniere and Kaapo Kakko on the right side. Stanley Cup contender on the left; lottery balls on the right. Thankfully for GM Chris Drury, as he navigates his first trade deadline, his arsenal is the envy of the NHL. He has cap space, a full array of picks, and a bevy of prospects to deal. The primary target (by a long shot) is J.T. Miller, who has already played right wing in New York. Reilly Smith also played for Gerard Gallant and would be a fit with Vegas’ need to unload cap space. The Rangers have also talked about adding a responsible checking line winger (think Ryan Carpenter in Chicago) to help round out the lineup. But keep an eye on Miller, as the Rangers would like a reunion and they can afford to sign him to an extension, too.
Pieces potentially in play: 2022 1st Round Pick, Kaapo Kakko, Braden Schneider, Vitali Kravtsov, Alexandar Georgiev

America's Insider Frank Seravalli once again saying some weird shit.

Also says Skjei might be in play in Carolina, which would be .... strange.
LOL

the more I read the more ludicrous it got

Thank you for the perspective and important context.

Last night he got in all alone in front of the goalie. Last year that puck doesn’t go in.

What he is doing seems to be the outlier.

Beat writers are full of shit. Need clicks and the best way to get it is to take the biggest teams; Toronto, New York, Boston, Montreal, etc.; and just throw out the names of players that the fanbase DOESN'T want to trade. Outrage makes money. Fans will talk about your article if you mention Kakko. They wont if you mention Goat and a 4th for Kessel.

To be fair, who doesn't wanna see them trade Kakko and then watch him become Mark Stone in two weeks?

I do not:
1. want to see this
2. believe it would happen
Well #2 depends on what we're talking about. Do I believe Kakko would live up to his draft hype anywhere that's not here? Yes I do. Do I believe it's actually happening beyond the tabloids? No. I'm also not entirely convinced they wouldn't, especially next year.

Imo keep your young players that still have a ton of potential and fix the obvious in-house issues instead of giving up on them to bring in new forwards you're going to neuter conducting business the same way.

Let's ignore for a minute where Kakko and Lafreniere were drafted.

What is this team short on? Secondary scoring. Talented forwards.

What are Kakko and Laf? Young cost controlled players with the potential to become solid second line players.

Like I've said before, if Kakko becomes a 50 point 2 way guy and Lafreniere a 70 point guy, if you ignore where they were picked in the draft that's a huge potential boon to this team's depth.

It doesn't make sense to me to trade either while their value is a little bit lower due to slow starts. I'm as frustrated as anyone that they are coming along slowly but this isn't the time to cut and run on either.

As for Chytil? Maybe. He's been around a lot longer. Still- I want to see him at wing EVERY GAME until the deadline to see if he can adjust. He's not a center in the NHL... not even close. Make his game simpler and maybe the physical tools will help him.

While your take isn't as indicting of the team as mine is -and fair enough, I'm me- I think we're on the same page.

Best case scenario, you trade Laf/Kakko for a top guy and cool, but like, do we need the cap expense of a top guy when we have Panarin, Zibanejad, and Kreider? We do not.

Worst case scenario, you trade them for a good player, when you should be able to just develop them into your own good players for cheaper.

And if you can't, figure out how. This is not impossible.
