Brooks also thought there was zero chance Nils would sign here, so maybe he should just take a back seat on this topic for now? He’s been hilariously off on every single thing related to Nils that’s he’s written.

It makes sense to move him if they want to upgrade a position for a player with term, but c’mon now

The Hockey Writers make claim that the Rangers have shown interest in Detroit's Troy Stecher, Nick Leddy, and Vlad Namestikov. Idk how reputable the source, but none of these names appear to make much sense from a Rangers perspective, imo...although I've always liked Nick Leddy. Veteran puck mover, can play special teams, responsible in his own zone. Reminds me of Tomas Kaberle.

leddy would be a great get for that third pair

So Nils, who we all talked about as being one of the better D prospects not in the NHL before the season started, is on the verge of having zero value 5 months into his professional career?

Tabloid logic.

Leddy would be a good pickup. Could probably be had for a 3rd rounder or so in terms of value.

Namestnikov would be an ok bottom 6 depth pickup too, most likely will be cheap as well.

Whenever I sat down to cheer for whoever the Islanders were facing in the playoffs, Leddy was the one d man who I just felt the other team had pay a little more attention to when compared to the others. Pretty much talking in terms of versatility, and he seems to always make the right (and/or safe) play. I even liked him in Chicago.

Leddy has averaged 12 seconds per game on the PK this season. I'm pretty confident he won't be a target.

Karlsson has fewer points than Brett Howden this year despite playing almost twice the minutes and plenty of power play time.

So even with retention, I'm caddy about that contract.

See my issue so far this break is that everyone is looking to find ways to upgrade on Ryan Strome, but then they are throwing out these names that have very similar strengths and weaknesses to Ryan.

Not saying anything about Karlsson, but your post made me check in on Brett Howden, and to my enormous surprise, he's having a really good season--across the board. His scoring totals are a bit inflated with a high shooting percentage, but even if it came down, his rates would be pretty consistent with his time here. But his playing driving numbers are absurdly better--going from one of the worst in the league to very good.

Always worth keeping in mind when we think about our players individually or those on other teams--fit, role, usage, teammates, systems, etc. are huge factors for anybody. We all should've known this by now after the Trouba-Pionk swap, but we keep seeing it over and over.

completely

that kid needs to find himself as a person get comfortable in his own skin before he ever does on the ice

hockey gods just love to F with us

Hockey God 1: hey guys this isn’t looking good rangers are poised to pick this zegras kid we all know is going to be a star. We can’t have that. What do we do?

(Everyone thinking)

Hockey God 2: should we just give them a break for once?

(Everyone Noooooo!)

Hockey God 3: I’ve got an idea, hear me out let’s make them win the draft lottery…

(Commotion/Anger/yelling)

Hockey God 4: you want to give them Jack Hughes are you nuts?!?!

Hockey God 3: no no listen. Let them win #2 overall. Everyone loves that awkward Finnish kid tearing it up right now. We all know he’s not as good as he’s showing right now. They’ll be forced to take him and not zegras and at best they’ll get a middle 6 defensive guy as usual

(silence)

Hockey God 1: that’s brilliant!!!! It’s so so painful and delicious. I love it!

(everyone erupts in celebration!)

In all seriousness, the Rangers dropped another ball there by not bringing a Finnish player to help Kakko acclimate. TBH I'd still do it because Kakko still doesn't look too comfortable around teammates.

P.S. How many Hockey Gods are out there?

If they really are getting a LHD, Leddy is not the guy at this point. Giordano would be the only target that I have, but I'm not a fan of getting another LHD. I'd prefer just another depth player. Much rather see Zac Jones get time now and see what we got with him and Schneider before making any moves.

This team needs forwards in the worst way possible. I'm not spending anything relatively premium on a defender.

Larry doesn't have any sources inside of the organization and hasn't for years. He barely writes about the team anymore, only to pop these gems out once every few weeks.

I’m here to ask the important questions:

Does anyone know why Keith Kinkaid’s nickname isn’t “Kinky”?

thanks.

His tenure here was underwhelming to put it mildly. I have no interest in a return engagement.
Fair enough, but if he comes cheap he's by far an upgrade on McKegg, Gettinger, Barron, Brodzinski and probably Rooney and Hunt too.

The problem when he came here is he was being used as a second liner. If he were the 4C who could slide up to the 3rd line with injuries (basically Rooney's role, who could be moved to McKegg's role) he'd be valuable. Definitely not a target for the RW we need though, definitely not.

I wonder if Karlsson could be had in a 3 way deal where we launder some money through Arizona. It's probably not worth talking about because they wouldn't want to retain for 5 years after this one but if we could have someone retain 2m a season on him so he's a 3.9m cap hit, he could be seriously valuable to us.

Idk, probably too many moving parts to get it done but could be interesting.

Especially with Kakko who seems really quiet and lacking in confidence both on and off the ice.

Kakko really needs to mature mentally as much as he does physically, he needs to start playing with confidence and purpose and trying to dictate things instead of acting like a scared teenager who is over his head. He has the size and skill to be better than he is right now in the NHL, his biggest shortcoming thus far IMO has been his confidence.
