Here's how I look at what the NYR should do this year. Mind you, these are my opinions, I'm not saying you need to agree:
I love this team, but they are NOT going deep into the playoffs as currently constructed.
Nothing, no rental, we could realistically add will make us top contender, never mind a favorite, to win the Cup.
Adding rentals will cost assets. In general, this team should not part with anything better than a 3rd rounder or third tier prospect, or combination thereof, for a pure rental. First because there isn't sufficient return for value, since winning the cup will STILL be a very longshot, and there's negative value once our playoffs are over, making it more difficult to add long term solutions. Second, because significant rentals will likely lessen the playing time/experience of our young players which would be the most valuable thing to come out of playing a series or two.
They should only look to add longer term pieces, or assets to use in the acquisition of long term pieces. They shouldn't be looking to deal from our forward pool of prospects, including Chytil if possible, but sure Gauthier can go, and regrettably VK, but only if management feels he has no place here anymore and its the right deal, they should be dealing from our glut: D prospects. I would personally avoid dealing Miller or Schneider at just about all costs.
They should deal cap space for assets at the TDL. Teams need to get players off of LTIR or make trades of their own and need the space. Take a bad expiring contract with prospects or picks attached. Use those assets, along with our D prospect surpluses in the offseason, or in other deals at the trade deadline, to get those long term pieces in positions of need. Or to keep the pipeline full.
Just my take on it.
