Gretzky was traded

Because the Oilers owner didn’t want to pay him because of his financial troubles not having to do with the Oilers. It’s the same reason we got Messier.

Not really relevant. Crosby hasn’t been traded. Ovechkin hasn’t been traded.

Zucc with an assist in the first period of his first game back. I’d bet good money Dallas re-signs him, Nill has been on the hot seat and with little depth behind Seguin, Radulov, and Benn, they’re desperate for another top 6 forward

I would not be happy with offering a 2nd rounder for Fox. An asset you can get for free should not cost you a potentially even better player.
I'm not sure that it's a slam dunk if the Rangers don't trade for him now that he waits for them next August. I'm sure he's their top choice, but if Carolina can arrange a trade with his second choice, does he still want to wait it out? I don't know. Don't think it's a slam dunk.

I’d have no issue trading either the TB or Dallas 2nd for Fox IF Dallas makes the playoffs. Fox in the 2nd round this year would be a fantastic pick

Part of me would love to see what Lundqvist could do on good team.

We became used to him putting teams on his back and making them legit contenders. While that’s not likely to happen with this bunch, I think he would do very well for himself on a legit contender.

Having said that, he isn’t going anywhere and I don’t see the return being worth asking him to change his mind.

If he does that on his own, so be it. But I don’t really see the Rangers pushing it. Nor should they.
I think seeing him in any other jersey would make me throw up, but just looking at it from the outside: he wouldve looked pretty good on San Jose this season. That team is very good but has the worst goaltending in the league.

Personally, I'm not moving **** for Fox. I'll roll the dice that he hits UFA. If he doesn't, our D pipeline is still looking pretty good anyway.
Yeah, agreed. Lmao at Carolina “might not move him for a second, it might take a first rounder” yeah good luck with that Waddell.

Better chance of getting him for Pionk straight up than there is the Rangers give up the Winnipeg pick. Aka no chance.

Nice try posturing in the media. The Rangers will just take their chance he comes next summer and if he goes somewhere else and signs, oh well.

Saying Pocklington didn't want to pay Gretzky is really downplaying the financial aspect of the trade. They got $15 million in the trade.

I have a problem giving them a 2nd round pick when he may have an extremely short list of places he would like to go to. You may be bidding against yourselves for a college free agent to be.

It’d be better for his development to get to the pros next season. We shouldn’t be so willing to wait.

Not saying I’m willing to trade a 1st or our 2nd. Just that the whole idea of waiting until next year isn’t a great one if the opportunity is there.

If you don't have the information that you are the only team interested then you have to assume you are not and make a competitive offer. If Fox only wanted to play for the Rangers he could just say he only wants to play for the Rangers and end all pursuit by other teams. There would be no reason for him not say this if that was the case. It will cause the Canes to get less in a deal but why would he care about that? Or the Canes can spite themselves, get nothing, and he waits a year (a negative for him but no different than if they tried to trade him to someone else and he won't sign there).

Fox is worth more than a 1st right now. The only reason he’s not returning that is because he won’t sign in Carolina. A late 2nd rounder is not a high price to pay for a young 21 year old RD who has well over a ppg in college.

I think the conversation essentially has two key components:

From a talent standpoint, Fox is worth a first.

From a situation standpoint, there’s less inclination to bid that high for a guy who is a pending UFA, has commuted to his college team, and who would consider the Rangers in a year’s time.

So when we talk about Fox, it’s not just about how one views his talent, it’s the fact that Carolina doesn’t really have a ton of bargaining position here.

For the Rangers it will be about finding that balance between being a firm negotiator, and over-playing their hand.
