Lundqvist has earned the right to decide if he wants to stay or go. End of story.

Why does this still keep getting brought up every time he says it's tough or frustrating?

He has a full NMC. He's committed to being a Ranger for life. He's not going anywhere unless he decides he wants to.
It's a tough situation for Hank. He's never, ever been through a rebuild. It's always been about winning for him.

He sees his chance at a cup melting away as the team takes a few steps back in order to try and take even more forward in the future. A future he might not even be around for.

His best friend on the team was just traded. I'm sure he's a ball of conflicted emotions right now.

I think this is the offseason it really hits home for him. The rebuild. It's implications for the end of his career.

Either he gets 100% on board with the process, or he asks to get traded. What he can't do is repeat what he's been doing. Some of his performances and on-ice actions lately just reek of despair. Completely understandable, but something that should be addressed in the offseason. The front office will respect his wishes, whether it's to stay or go.

Canes fans on the main board seem to believe they can get a 2nd or more in return for Fox and would rather let him walk for free rather than receive any asset at all. Interesting approach to say the least.
Canes fans are underrated hard-line GMs who give no quarter and drive the hardest possible bargains when it comes to not trading any of their defensemen ever for any reason.

So give up what for Fox? Like a 5th? Carolina can’t have any leverage

Reading Raleigh-area sources, they are like "We'd like a first, but will probably have to settle for a second."

They won't do a fifth.

The issue with Hank is what team actually wants an aging goalie with a huge cap hit who may or may not fall off a cliff in the next couple years? Let alone a team that's a cup contender and is in a city where he wants to play?

Calgary and Columbus could both use a goalie but would Hank waive to go there? Chicago might be his best bet if they think they're poised for a rebound and Crawford can't be relied upon because of his health.

This is from a few weeks ago.

Lundqvist, who is splitting time in goal these days with Alexandar Georgiev, made 41 saves. Given how well Georgiev has played in his extended look, it is fair to wonder what the future holds for Lundqvist, who has been the Rangers’ unquestioned No. 1 goalie since about a month after he arrived from Sweden in 2005 and is under contract for two more seasons.

Lundqvist, 37, won’t speak about what he thinks his role might look like next season.

“I want to finish this season before I start thinking about next season,’’ he said. “When the season is over, you’ve got to analyze it. What can I do better? You can’t worry about what’s going to happen next year. Not now.’’

Lundqvist tries to stay focused as losses mount

Next season arrives on Sunday. The Rangers are going to hold their exit meetings on Monday or Tuesday.

When the Rangers tell Lundqvist they want to give Georgiev more starts next season and find a way to work in Shestyorkin, what is Lundqvist going to say? This is a competitive player and is he going to be content having a limited role?

This can’t be about one player. The franchise is bigger than that.

His contract has two more seasons left. The Rangers are going to have the status quo for the next two years?

Georgiev has played so well. He is the Rangers #1 goalkeeper right now. I had proposed the Rangers building up his value and trading him but the Rangers really don’t need more draft picks unless it’s a #1. The Rangers could go with both Russians for the foreseeable future. They can have them under control.

There was a report on the NHL Network about Lundqvist on trade deadline day.

Brooks said it wasn’t true. I don’t know who on the NHL Network reported that.

It would make some sense for next season. Bobrovsky goes to Florida. Columbus needs a veteran goalkeeper. Some people said Quick might end up there. Korpisalo isn’t very good. They have this Latvian kid Elvis who they like.

I know a lot of people love Lundqvist but the Rangers need to make decisions for what is best for the franchise and not just one player.

Is Lundqvist going to be content in a limited role? The Rangers aren’t going back Lundqvist playing 50 plus games again next season.

San Jose, especially if EK re-signs there.

Best case scenario is to settle for a kid in a position we have a lot-jam at. Someone that would have more value to Carolina than to us. Don’t know who that would be from Carolina’s POV, but from our POV we obviously have an extreme logjam at LD with Rykov, Reunanen, Lindgren, Ragnarsson, Själin, Gilmour and many many others.

Much rather give up like Lindgren and a 4th than a 2nd. Reunanen? Rykov? Where are these guys supposed to play? Skjei, Hajak and KAndree are three young guys. Depth is great of course and stuff will happen, but those kids aren’t a ton of years away, they are all the same age.

If Gorts asked him I am sure Hank would hang them up. He isn’t interested in going anywhere.

Why would Gorton ask Hank to hang them up? He would need to turn right around and get another vet to back up the kids. Hank is a strong leader and voice in the room.

The cap space? We have capspace, it’s only easy to spend on long term commitments. We aren’t contending while we are spending 20m on Staal, Smith, Shatty and Girardi. We could literary replace them at a cost of 1.5m per with Claesson and Gilmour/Hajak.

I only think this becomes an issue after next season.

Send Columbus Shattenkirk too, their PP stinks. Bring back Savard, big RD who plays with an edge, he can take some even minutes as well as PK.

Agree with the bulk of what you're saying here, but the front office can only lead him to water. They can't make him drink. Nobody is forcing arguably the best player this franchise has ever produced out the door.

The sun's getting real low for Hank. There's a chance we can be good again before his body gives out, but it's a small one. He needs to understand that staying could mean the end of his cup aspirations.

These are also the worst teams he's ever played for in his adult life, not just the NHL.

Going back to Sweden, I'm not sure if Lundqvist was ever on a consistently well below average team until the last few years.

At the very least, he was on average teams that he elevated, but not "really bad" teams per se.

A lot of this is new to him.

Could easily argue that we're seeing him at the tail end of what has been a team being built around him and a handful of others all these years.
I don't disagree. He dragged the carcasses of some pretty terrible rosters into the playoffs over the course of his career. The team just kept trading assets and going for it.

I mean, it's really not a terrible plan when you have a generational goaltender that literally won't allow you to tank. It almost worked, too. But that era has ended.

I am getting a bit hyped by the Adam Fox news. I saw him just about every game in the WJC last season, I just went back and saw the Fin-USA game again (or parts of it). He is just a very good hockey player.

Sure the skating is a little issue, but he is smart positionally etc. Its different in College, he is the Bobby Orr 2.0 of his team, he has 48 pts in 33 games, the 2nd highest scoring guy has 31. It’s like with Erik Karlsson and that debate if he is the best or worst ever defensively. Karlsson will make defensive plays nobody can do, and then totally horrible plays. The bigger the role and the more dominating a kid is, the more he — should — cheat. I think many have seen some defensive issues that he has had in college, but when playing a more conservative role for the US in the WJC he had no such problems really. Of course the NHL is a different story and he possibly has to do adjust a little bit. Playing a little bit in the AHL is not wrong for any D. Although I do think that he can step right in. He is a really smart and bright guy when you listen to him in interviews.

He would be a great add. If he works out as well as I expect him to do, he is significant add. I would compare it to a top 10-15 pick. I would take him over Bouchard. Boqvist? It’s hard, I think I would take Fox over Boqvist. You easily take him over Liljegren, AINEC. Heiskanen of course is ahead of Fox. I would take Bowen over Fox, but who knows after 10-15 years what the verdict is.

I'd wait until Fox's season is over. Get him for free as from what I'm hearing he's focused on joining the Rangers.

Yeah and there is also like a general franchise stamina thing.

If you where around from 97’ to 05’, you know that starting a full blown rebuild for 5-7 years wasn’t an option in like 07’. We were a total freak show. Dave Schatchard took less to go elsewhere, nobody wanted to come to NY. Hank barely signed with us, people he trusted adviced him to just request a trade and go somewhere else. The crowd — who can blame them — where totally nuts. We get to G5 in the 2nd round of the POs at home in a 2-2 series and the crowd don’t give one f*** about the game but instead just spends every energy they have to totally boo a player on our team, it was surreal. But you can never blame the mass, you get what you deserve.

Brooks went totally nuts regarding Jagr. Jagr loved it here and we loved him, but we were such a total crazy place that Jagr bolted to the KHL... Jagr scored 50, boy was he questioned extremely much by the media. He said that the POs is different, you work harder there, Brooks totally freaked out.

The state of this franchise right now is extremely different than back in 05’-07’. The pressure in NY right now can’t be much worse than in most other cities. Sure it’s a head scratcher that someone like Pionk is trashed to the extent he is, an UDFA doing fairly well and often better than over paid vets, why the hate? But it was so much worse 12 years ago.

I bring this up because it’s important to remember that there is a window for this rebuild that we have no. We can’t do it for 5 years and then notice that we screwed up and do it again for 5 years.

I'd 1000000% take him over Bouchard.

With all the talk of Bob going to Florida, I wonder if that would be a place Hank would consider waiving his NMC for.

They've got a ton of talent and are going to be very aggressive this summer. No state income tax and I believe he has/had a place in Miami. Friedman mentioned yesterday that AV's name has come up for Florida if they decide to make a coaching change. Would Hank waive to go play for AV again?

I doubt he would to go play for Torts again...

As stated by a few others why is Hank brought up constantly. Stop with the BS that the franchise is bigger than one player...this man has been THE FRANCHISE FOR THE LAST 13 YEARS. We wouldn’t have had half the success without this guy. He has put this organization on his back every year. Never complains, loves it here, a loyal guy who has bled Ranger Blue through and through. What in the f*** are we going to get for him at 37 that would justify trading him? And would those “assets” be more valuable than having Hank here with Allaire, mentoring the young goalies? And having Hank in that room, a true leader, to guide these young kids?

Some of you are relentless. Like robots. Trade everyone over 27. Even trade the guy who is the face of the Rangers.

No. Sorry to ruin your master plans. This guy gets to decide what he wants to do with his future. He earned that right.

I hope he stays and wins a cup even if its as a backup.

Hank likes Torts. Tortorella built an entire system around him, and Hank had his best years under Torts. CLB plays a very similar defensive structure in the D-Zone. Although they struggle with turnovers going the other way from the neutral zone, and offensive zone. That's fixable for CLB.

Probably the biggest thing they need to work on. When CLB is rolling, they are a very good team, but one that has inconsistencies.

Will be interesting to see how free agency unfolds for that team. They have a very deep farm in all positions. Bemstrom is the real deal. I think he can score 25 next year. Foudy is another one, same with Texier. On defense they have Gavrikov & Peake.
