Agreed on the need. One of the many reasons I believe that the choice needs to be Bryram.

Sounds more like Seider from what I've read. Byram is a beast, but in the all around kind of way.

What we really need is a Willie Mitchell kind of 2nd pair guy.

Size/diversity wise, I think we're ok on the left side. There is enough depth and versatility of talent there to be able to unearth 3 guys IMO. That doesn't mean stay away from LHD in the draft if the top guy on your board is a LHD, but the need is less glaring.

Lately it feels like I am positive about everyone, but I have a good gut feeling about Fox. I don't think his pros or cons are incorrectly described. But the kid is just so assertive and competitive and poised on the ice, that I think he can handle the tests he will face. Like in the WJCs two years ago, he just had that fight back ability. Raised to the occasion. He kinda plays the way he looks: ;)

Everyone are of course different, but like Schultz and Fox are very different personas on the ice. Not that I know Schultz very well, but he is more Vesey type. Fox is more of a Dubinsky type.

Furthermore, I am not sure that the problem or two defensively Fox can get into is that much about bad calls as it is about maybe trying to do to much at times. I haven't seen him much in College, but in the bigger games in the WJC he was certainly sufficiently conservative.

But like sure, as any PMD he will be stripped of pucks at times, and sometimes someone will go on the outside of him. He wouldn't be perfect. But I think that he is a fairly complete and mature defense men already, and I do think he would be ready from the get go.
Reminds me of Moneyball, “kid has a good face”, but lacks confidence, his girlfriend is a 6

Yes and no. I think that you are right when you say that he is a beast in the all around kind of way. I happen to think that, believe it or not, his offensive abilities are somewhat unfairly overshadowing his defensive ability. I think that he is the best defender in the draft.

Do not disagree. The hope there is that is Joey Keene. Some of the local pundits have described him as Rafalski-like.

I also think that Lindgren could be that player. From 2nd or third pairing. Problem just gets exacerbated if indeed they do get Byram.

Oh, the need is definitely less glaring with Miller, Hajek and Lingren in tow. That said, Byram drops, you nab him.

I HAD A DREAM
Fox, ADA and Trouba on the right
Hajek, one of Rykov/Lindgren/Keane, Staal (=> Miller) on the left
Claesson spare

Smith traded with Retainment or as 14th fwd.
Shatty, Pionk and Skjei dealt in the offseason
Bring a vet LD to camp that the rookies need to beat for a spot
He could be a mentor in HFD if he clears waivers too.
Sentiments here spot on, not sure that I would dump Skjei yet especially at low value but if we can get Trouba in 2 years we look like this perhaps:

Skjei Trouba
Hajek ADA
Miller Fox

Assets to move or continue pipeline include Rykov, Lindgren, Keane, Lundkvist, Tarmo

You guys are acting like NYR is the only team Fox would play for/sign for if dealt to them. I'm suspicious of that claim.

I would imagine he has a small list of teams, and that Carolina will know who is available. In that event, not only would we have to outbid other clubs, but it's no certainty that if he isn't dealt that we're the only choice next offseason.

The long standing rumor is that he wants to sign with only NYR or NYI, with NYR being his preference.

I think its less of a rumor now that things have played out the way that they have. There is a reason why the Rangers have been mentioned multiple times.

I didn't say I'd trade a 1st for him. A 3rd? Sure. A 2nd? Possibly. A 1st? Nope.

I just thought the rationale was odd. You wouldn't trade a pick which is a complete unknown for a guy whose named and is years into his development. Obviously the player would be more of a "known commodity" in this scenario.
I was kinda grouping someone else being willing to trade a 1st into my response to you.

But I guess with how many 1sts we traded over the years, which has set us back has made me weary of trading a 1st now while we are rebuilding. I wouldnt even deal a 2nd for Fox. The kid go back for his Senior year and then hit free agency. If teams know there is a chance he may not sign with them then they arent giving up more than a 3rd either, if that.

Canes fans on the main board seem to believe they can get a 2nd or more in return for Fox and would rather let him walk for free rather than receive any asset at all. Interesting approach to say the least.

Lol good luck to them. Letting him walk for nothing would be horrible asset management.

Lundqvist sounds miserable

I asked if it has been even harder for him to perform because his backup, rookie Alexandar Georgiev, has won the right to start, and won more games down the stretch here. Lundqvist has always played batches of games in a row.

“Yeah, well,” he said as he sighed and laughed at the same time, “it’s been a tough stretch, to be honest. But it makes sense. Georgie’s playing really well. He’s getting a lot of minutes now, and he deserves it. For me, every time you come in there, it’s a different feeling for sure. I’ve just got to work harder to get that comfortable feeling, that game feeling that you’re used to having when you play every second day, you’re in it. Now you feel a little off. But that’s the reality now. I’ve just got to adjust to that down the stretch here.

“Like I said, Georgie deserves every minute he’s getting now, the way he’s playing, finding ways to help the team to win, and I’m not. I always want to play, but like I said, it makes sense to give him more minutes now, for many reasons, to make him feel more and more comfortable out there. He deserves to play. So those two reasons are enough.”

“I’m going to be honest,” Lundqvist said. “It’s been tougher than I expected. But you try to make the most of it, try to work as hard as you can. It’s just, all the losses have been tough to deal with, I think. The first couple months, come in with a lot of energy and then, I felt really good the first few months. I felt, really, better than I felt in years. My play was right there. Then the losses started to add up, I think, and it got a little frustrating for the group but also for me personally to deal with that. The mindset is a little different, for sure, compared to all the years I’ve been here, all the years I played pro in Sweden. It was always about winning. What can we make the next move right now to get better and win? But now it’s different and you can feel it, and I understand why it’s different … it’s been a task. … It’s been very different. The biggest challenge has been the mental aspect, I think, more than anything, to deal with that. It’s been affecting me more than I thought it would.”

Lundqvist wants to play every game. He is 37 years old and the Rangers are rebuilding. Georgiev is getting more starts now. Shestyorkin will reportedly/supposedly be signing with the Rangers next month. What happens next season?

Lundqvist is wasting the few remaining years of his career playing on a rebuilding team which has two young talented goalkeepers pushing for more playing time.

I think it’s a fair approach. Is it really worth being a doormat for a third round pick? What kind of precedent does that set? “Come get drafted by the Canes and play in college so you can force your way to your preferred destination via trade!!! You don’t even have to wait the four years!”

It I was in their shoes, I’d tell the Rangers to shove it for anything of meager value.

Lundqvist can do what ever the f*** he wants.

Wanna finish out your career here? Sure thing.

Wanna play somewhere else and try to win a cup? Sure thing.

He has however, earned his right to call his shot as to what ever else he wants to do. Personally, I hope he hangs around long enough to still be here when we're good again and possibly win it all, even if its in a back up role.

Amazes me that this keeps coming up. He decides and management will accommodate what he decides. Sure it's harder day to day than he thought and after the season ends in a week he'll step back, decompress and then and only then would a change in mindset occur IF AT ALL.

Either way it's up to him.

Double-checked with the NHL. NCAA Harvard’s Adam Fox cannot sign elsewhere for this season even if traded by Carolina. He can still be traded, however, and the game of poker is about 2019-20. If the Hurricanes do not deal him, Fox can a) join them or b) go back to school, becoming a free agent after next season. A few teams have checked in, saying GM Don Waddell is asking a high price.

The problem is, a lot of them suspect this is about the Rangers, who wouldn’t feel the need to pay big under those circumstances. If Fox is considering anyone else, it’s a small list and probably close to Manhattan.

Rangers or nothing.

When I think of Lundqvist's career, there's a twinge of sadness there. No cups, an aging superstar on a team that's getting younger by the month.

Maybe he's here if the Rangers can climb back into the realm of a contender, but that seems like a bit of a long shot.

I think if he got that cup in 2014, things feel different. But there's this inescapable feeling that he deserved better.

What potential coaches are available this off-season? We need a Ruff replacement.

The bolded is what I want for this team, more than anything. Many people seem to focus on offensive numbers, but give me the big, tough defender who can shut down the other team, clear the crease, win board battles and get the puck up to the forwards. If he can put up points too, great, but I want, and what this team desperately needs, is a guy who can play big minutes against the other teams' top players.
I think Nico Gross is going to be your guy. Every time I have seen him play, he’s done just as you said. I actually think he has a good low shot and excellent first pass.
