There's too much concern about the locker room. These are grown men and professionals.

This is great in theory, but as anyone who has ever worked in a professional setting can verify--being a grown man/woman doesn't prevent the workplace from becoming toxic when there are personality conflicts. This is even more likely for grown men playing a boys' game.

Year after year we hear about teams thriving due to the positive mix in the room and underperforming due to problems in the room. Discounting it entirely is a mistake.

No, no it does not

Add to the fact that competitive sports get people's blood running and these guys are all jumped up on high proteins diets and it's unsurprising when heads clash.

You can also add in issues of professional jealousy and entitlement that are inherent in being in a field where only a tiny percentage of people make it, and its status as a "dream career" that could set you up for life financially.

The academic job market isn't that different (in terms of job scarcity, not in terms of financial return, haha), and some of the people on the job market get REALLY vicious at times.

It's true. Though the Academic market is more like European football leagues in that everyone is trying to move up in the world to the top clubs, and making it for Crystal Palace or Southeastern Oklahoma State isn't the same as making it at Manchester United or Yale.

The NHL is the best league in the world by such a wide margin that the worst NHL team would probably beat the best KHL team in a best of 7 series.

What a horror show.
I like Barron and Hunt. Hunt is a better player than Chytil has gotten to work with all season long on that third line imo. I would rather see Hunt - Barron - Goat and put Laf on the 1RW spot.

As someone working (albeit on the tenure track) in Arkansas...I get it, haha. #AcademicECHL

NHL is the equivalent of the Ivies/top 10 programs. And the higher up you go, the more cutthroat it gets (I heard about a case a few years ago where Columbia hired 5 TT profs for one tenure line. IE: They would all work there for ~5 years, but then four of them would be dismissed without tenure).

Athletes may be supremely gifted with their physical skills, but they are just like “normal” people with regards to everything else. And, when you think of how much time they spend together on the road, the issues compound. While a great “room” is not essential for success, it is preferable.

They really aren’t. A big thing that separates pro athletes from normal joes aside from the physical talent is the mentality.

Interesting Gallant doesn't seem to think there's a big difference between 8, 10, 12, 15 minutes of ice time when it comes to developing a young player. It's like he's never even read an HFB post.
normally I wouldnt be too worried about minutes persay, but the fact laf essentially lost a season of development in a time that kids play and play a ton each game is something that I worry is glossed over. With his situation I think minutes do matter. Normally I would say it is nuts to send a guy down, but laf would probably benefit tremendously from a 10-14 day spurt of playing 20 mins a game if not more even in the ahl. The issue is any such move would be made out to mean he is a failure rather than looked at as a way for him to get reps

Such a weird scenario. Laff comes across happy and goofy all the time and the team seems like they're ok with his progression. You don't hear a word of concern or consternation leaked to the media. Crazy.

He'd be interested to learn what HFB thought was his philosophy on this subject back in the summer.

We do? I think particularly in hockey it's very rarely an issue.

Like I said in the earlier post, really next year is the big year for him. Next season he needs to show something to start to distinguish himself. He in no way needs to be a finished product, but next year is when you're looking for him to start distinguish himself from being simply a mid-six forward and start to look like he can be a top six guy. I'm not in the area of panic with him yet at all, I am just mildly concerned and really hoping to see him take that stuff next year. I think he really needs to commit to a new off-season regimen as well for training. His strength just seems like it isn't there. He seems like he has the in-between strength, the strength where he could power through junior players, but not the strength to be able to play that same way in the NHL. Sometimes these kids just need extra time. I just really would like to see him improve his lower body strength substantially

The concept that you can have a room full of people who all love each other is fantasy land. Just like most professions you have to deal with people in your workplace you don't really like, but you still make it work, hockey locker rooms can be like that too.

You of course cannot have the Antonio Brown in there causing ridiculous distractions, but saying every immature kid is a problem for the locker room or every time you play a skilled kid above a grizzled veteran is a problem, is just nonsense. These are the things people are paid to get over.

I still think he's going to be fine and a big time player. In the meantime he's on a top team in the league and is going to experience the intensity of playoff hockey. I would hope that's all the motivation he needs to put the extra work in this offseason. Same for Miller, Kakko, Schneider or any of the other young guys.

I would hope the rangers don’t trade KAM. Just my two cents.
I would like to see KAM play the next few weeks like he wanted to remain a Ranger forever and hit everything in sight and jump in on a few more rushes and be a real bastard in the corners !!! If he and Gauthier would do that...they could write their next contracts and not hear a peep about trade talk . I liked seeing Gauthier on the rush last game on Quick....despite no goal ! If he AND Kreider would do that....we are a different looking club.....Kreider hardly ever does it anymore .

Plus Gallant confirmed today that he's never going to play him 2-3 minutes, so that's a plus.
