What incentive would he have to sign long term as opposed to waiting a week to become a FA? He can't get an 8th year at that point.
It happens. Yandle did that with Florida. The player will have more options once July 1 hits, but they know the team will as well.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but, if Florida has his rights before July 1, they can give him the extra year.

I disagree with you. Paying one elite guy an elite salary while team building doesn't necessarily mean you're building around that player and certainly isn't "building by signing UFA's". It's one guy on a team of 18 skaters that a piece of the puzzle. Again, I'm not on the pro-Panarin train but I get the philosophy why some people are. Are any of those 7-8 1st rounders going to be as good or better than Panarin who you can basically get for nothing other than salary? Unlikely. The Ranger have the cap room and by the time all of these first rounders are UFA's we're talking YEARS down the road where Panarin's cap hit will likely be far less a % of the cap than it is today.

I'm even less on the Karlsson train because I don't think his health/play will survive through a lengthy contract as well as Panarin's will.
Will Panarin be as good here in NY with the players we will be surrounding him with?

Is Chytil or Zbad setting him up constantly?

It's not just about Panarin its about the team around him and who those players are and what this team IS becoming. It's a timing thing and those who wanna throw a bag of money AND term to a UFA who may come here and make us 1st round fodder doesn't help us build this team. It's banking on us finding those players to compliment Panarin via draft or *gasp* worse via more UFA because those players just aren't here yet.

It'd characterize it as putting the cart so far in front of the horse that we can't even see it over the horizon.

Yes it is rare that players of that caliber become available.

That fact doesn't change the issue that the NYR as a team are NOT ready to add that type of player yet. It does nothing to make us true contenders and puts us squarely in the also ran category and mediocrity. The absolute worst place ANY team can be.

IF In two years when we NEED a player like X or Y or Z and we know we haven't drafted him and we go after him via UFA it would make some sense. We still won't be getting the player we are paying for, but maybe we'd be getting enough of him to make it worth while. But that point is still 2 (maybe more years from now)

With what cap space does Florida even intend to sign Bob/Panarin? They are at 76M now and they're only UFA are Sheahan and McGinn (+Jokinen buy out). Trading Hoffman to sign Panarin is just like the Rangers trading Kreider to do so.

The reason Breadman is elite is he does the setting up!

They have exactly as much space as we do.

Thats a situation where they can fit both guys in at a combined 20 mill (or maybe slightly less, depending on how much bob makes)

They have the space to do it with out touching much on their actual roster.

They also have Florida taxes...

$10m in Florida is 10m, that ain’t true in NYC

They have less long term. The Rangers have basically nobody under contract. The Panthers have seven guys with 3 more years left which is about half their cap. They also theoretically have Hoffman/Dadonov to sign after next year if they want.

What players are ACTUALLY this team's core right now? We have Mika, Kreider (who might be gone by the draft), a bunch of older vets who stink, Henrik, and a bunch of younger, unproven players who are either streaky or have yet to establish themselves. We don't even have a core yet, they've yet to be actually established. That's not a situation you add 11 million + UFA players to.
