If you don’t want to pay Kakko’s RFA raise, they really should start thinking about sending him to Arizona for Chychrun. That may be an economically smart trade. Then you can tap into the prospect depth on D to improve the right side of the forward lines. If Kakko is going to get a raise around Chychrun’s cap hit/or there is a possible Kotkaniemi scenario, you at least need to have that conversation. Just simple math.
I mean Chychrun is a 23 year old probably 1LHD locked in for three more years at around 4.6m. If you are going to have to pay Kakko around that much on a bridge, you need to ask yourselves what player is going to be delivering more value. Especially with the Rangers have very little room as is under the cap and the squeeze getting worse. Nothing personal just economics. Easier to get Wingers than top pair caliber D men
Over the last few days, I've been thinking about this same scenario. I like Kakko but I'm just not 100% sold on he's going to better then we think, and I also agree that his next contact might be close to what Chychrun is making. While I would think long on trading him, I could see Arz wanting him.
What if we expanded the trade?
Kakko and Chytil for Chychrun and Hayton.
Maybe Hayton works out as our 2C behind Zibs. I'm about done with Chytil whom I wanted to succeed this season so bad. I know a lot of posters don't love Hayton, but I believe he needs a fresh start and to play with better players than Arz has--I could be wrong but if it was just Chytil for Hayton would you kill it to take a chance on a 2C?
Goodrow or Kravs (whom many think will be dealt) move to RW.
Lehkonen for Goat and 3rd or just for the blues 2nd pick is another move I would make.
Yes Goodrow, Kravs or Lehkonen are not Kakko but in this trade I'm given to get.
Also, if you had a chance would you trade:
Kakko straight up for Byfield both were number 2 picks in their drafts, LA has a ton of centers in their system. Not sure LA would but would the Rangers?
I also agree that any trade of Kakko is leaving the right side short, but we still have ammo to possibly trade, Nils, Jones, Robertson, etc.
There are moves that could be made and with the available cap space who knows.
