Here is an interesting toss-out.

What about Jesperi Kotkaniemi?

Not saying Carolina didn't want him but part of their offer sheet for him was definitely a revenge motive against Montreal for the Aho offer sheet.

Meanwhile Kotkaniemi is averaging a career high 0.50 ppg while playing bottom 6 minutes. He's like their 10th or 11th highest average time on ice forward. And yet he's producing.

Clearly he's kinda a luxury for them. Even if their plan is to eventually let Trocheck and Staal go, they have Aho and Necas ahead of him at center, and they have tons of other young forwards like Jarvis, Svechnikov, Teravainen, and guys in the minors too, like Rees, Bock, Drury, and Suzuki.

I wonder if that could be an interesting buy-low option for the Rangers. Probably not at the deadline since we'll be in competition with them, but in the offseason? He'll be an expiring contract so we'd be trading for his rights.

Due to the OS, I do not believe he can be traded for a year from the signing date

The guy has requested a trade. It’s adding in someone to help every night in Lehkonen.

Also, the value is partially Georgiev and partially taking on Koskinen

There's a lot of teams in on Lehkonen from what I've read - I don't think Gauthier and a 2nd gets that done. If it would, I'd certainly pull that trigger.

Chytil is f***ing terrible and useless. Plays just die on his stick. No excuses now, he is getting to play with Panarin and he is still just as painful to watch. Him and Nemeth are the first two that must go.

Anyways, last night they sucked. They looked slow and not interested. At least not until the 3rd period. Dumb penalties and plays led to goals against. Throw that game away. Come back and win tonight against Arizona. Get an up close look at Chychrun.
Why so negative all of a sudden?

Chytil isn’t playing with Panarin, FWIW, but with Laf and Goodrow.

Waive Georgiev at this point. His good games are good, but you never know when he’s going to bomb like he did last night, and he does it fairly often. Nobody wants an inconsistent goaltender.

They had a cupcake schedule the first 8 weeks of the season and since they started facing more play off teams, their record has slipped to 9-7-1 with a GD of 47-45. Still above .500 but hardly contender-numbers. They rank 14th league-wide in point percentage since their schedule got harder.

If you’re going to deep dive into the schedule I don’t know why you’d neglect to mention 11 of those 17 games have been on the road. It makes a difference. Florida is 7-5-5 on the road too. They’ve only played 16/41 games at home.

Negative now? I have wanted Chytil gone all season nor does it make me “negative”. And wanting Nemeth upgraded like the rest of the fan base doesn’t make me negative either.

You are correct that Chytil didn’t play with Panarin last night. He was still miserably bad.

I’ll just say I vehemently disagree with the fact that he bombed last night. He was under siege for at least 2/3 of the game.

Every season comes with peaks and valleys. All good teams adapt, learn from losses, get better over time. Let's see how they work through some adversity here. While I agree with anyone who says they're not quite a top echelon team, I do believe that they have something special about them. I am excited to see how they evolve over the last half of the season here.

The Rangers got dominated in their own end and gave up prime scoring chances. Georgie wasn't outstanding by any stretch, but let's not pretend last night was anything other than a complete breakdown, in all aspects.

Are they a play off team? Absolutely
Are they a contender? No

Any team that gets into the playoffs has a shot. That's the beauty of our game. Again, favorites? No. Can they make a run? Absolutely.

Yeah, but this isn't the NFL where you win a game, and move on.

A best-of-7 series more often than not goes to the better team. There's a reason the highest ranked team wins the Cup more than any other. It's not impossible but especially in the salary cap era, teams don't go from missing the play offs to winning a cup without having some play off runs in between.

If I was the producer I would've really given Valley a piece of my mind after he made those Schneider comments. The fanbase was already on edge because of the bad performance and they can't suffer through a loss, and he brought the anxiety up to 11/10 to steal a line from Spinal Tap.

The Metro is going to be a blood bath in the playoffs. The Rangers can't handle high octane team this year such as Carolina, Florida, Vegas. Calgary is more of a hybrid.

Which is why time and time again you can only go so long in the playoffs without running into one of those teams from either the Metro or Atlantic. Going all in is a terrible idea. Slight add/enhancements are fine.

The biggest playoff mismatch in the NHL in a 7 game series is more likely to be an upset than a team like the Steelers was to beat the Chiefs in a single game. You can just look at the odds. The biggest underdog last year were the Blues at +255 against the Avs in round 1. That’s slightly worse than the 49ers are this week. The Steelers were like +700ish. Just because it’s one game vs 7 doesn’t mean it’s more likely anything can happen. Far more variance in hockey than football

I mean Chychrun is a 23 year old probably 1LHD locked in for three more years at around 4.6m. If you are going to have to pay Kakko around that much on a bridge, you need to ask yourselves what player is going to be delivering more value. Especially with the Rangers have very little room as is under the cap and the squeeze getting worse. Nothing personal just economics. Easier to get Wingers than top pair caliber D men

it’s a good question. it’s also let’s you move 1-2 of lindgren/Miller/Robertson for whatever else you need.
But what is kakko getting compared to Chycrun cap wise, that’s the question

Can we all just agree there are just too many "they need" scenarios for the Rangers to win the Cup this year? They essentially have to have NY Giants historical + 86 Canadians luck:

-They need another center who has chemistry with the right players
-They need Igor to be perfect every night
-They need someone else to play and take out Carolina in round 1
-They need for Florida to be eliminated
-They need for Vegas to be eliminated
-They need for Calgary to be eliminated

What did he say.

I missed it. Whst did Vally say in regards to Schneider?

If you don’t want to pay Kakko’s RFA raise, they really should start thinking about sending him to Arizona for Chychrun. That may be an economically smart trade. Then you can tap into the prospect depth on D to improve the right side of the forward lines. If Kakko is going to get a raise around Chychrun’s cap hit/or there is a possible Kotkaniemi scenario, you at least need to have that conversation. Just simple math.

Over the last few days, I've been thinking about this same scenario. I like Kakko but I'm just not 100% sold on he's going to better then we think, and I also agree that his next contact might be close to what Chychrun is making. While I would think long on trading him, I could see Arz wanting him.

What if we expanded the trade?

Kakko and Chytil for Chychrun and Hayton.

Maybe Hayton works out as our 2C behind Zibs. I'm about done with Chytil whom I wanted to succeed this season so bad. I know a lot of posters don't love Hayton, but I believe he needs a fresh start and to play with better players than Arz has--I could be wrong but if it was just Chytil for Hayton would you kill it to take a chance on a 2C?

Goodrow or Kravs (whom many think will be dealt) move to RW.

Lehkonen for Goat and 3rd or just for the blues 2nd pick is another move I would make.

Yes Goodrow, Kravs or Lehkonen are not Kakko but in this trade I'm given to get.

Also, if you had a chance would you trade:

Kakko straight up for Byfield both were number 2 picks in their drafts, LA has a ton of centers in their system. Not sure LA would but would the Rangers?

I also agree that any trade of Kakko is leaving the right side short, but we still have ammo to possibly trade, Nils, Jones, Robertson, etc.

There are moves that could be made and with the available cap space who knows.

there’s no way anymore offering a 1st for him so that offers as good as it gets and Gorton will be friendly W Drury imo
