Hopefully Shesterkin can continue carrying us, don't you think we're playing poorly despite our results? We've been outplayed in at least 30 of those 40 games (and that is being very conservative, I'd say it's closer to 36 that we've been outplayed in)

Outshot does not necessarily mean outplayed and that 36 number you threw out there is ridiculous. I do think they have played poorly at times but I think some of that has to do with the idiotic scheduling this year and fatigue in a lot of those games. I also think they usually have a bad period in most games that skews the numbers like last night. The first period was trash but the next 2 were fine. Even without Shesty we are like 8-6. I think the numbers get better in the second half but again I'm more concerned with the wins.

Couldn't care less about a "measuring stick" in mid January.

I'd rather have the better goalie in net on the back half when the team may not be as sharp.
It's more important to beat Carolina then the Coyotes, but besides that, if the Rangers can't beat the Coyotes with a shooter tutor in goal then their problems are massive.

Not to be snippy, but if they're such poor predictors of success then why do we give a flying f*** what the corsi and fenwick metrics are?

I feel like I've been fighting this fight for a decade now.
Sort teams by their underlying numbers and a clear trend emerges. Just because the Rangers are bucking the trend this season doesnt undermine their usefulness.

We've had a pretty favorable schedule so far IIRC, we've also been pretty lucky with the timing of our guys being in Covid protocol. Some other teams got absolutely screwed. I don't really buy that excuse.

On the optimistic side, I've always been a big believer in Shesterkin and I do think he will sustain this level of play and will go down as equal to, or dare I say.. better than Hank. We've had some mediocre teams that Hank dragged pretty far, the ceiling of this core is much higher than 2014 imo. I don't like the argument of saying a team sucks but their goaltending is good, as if the goaltender isn't a significant part of the team. That's like removing the star players on any other team and saying they'd suck if they didn't have x or y, well they do have x or y so hypotheticals don't matter

Do you think they were outplayed last night? Because Toronto's coach doesn't think that. Shot numbers against dont mean too much to me tbh, every team is going to get a bunch especially when they are playing from behind (which many teams have been doing against us this year). I also don't think any Ranger fan should be apologizing for Igor's excellent play.

Shots for is a better measurement of whether the team is playing well in my opinion. When the Rangers get 25-30 shots in a game they have a great chance to win because of the skill level of the forwards. Adding another top 6 guy and defenseman can only help

Outplayed in the first, but then I give the edge to the Rangers for most of the rest of that game.

I think the Rangers get outplayed for stretches in every game, but thats normal for every team throughout a long season. The good thing about us is that very often we get off to awful starts but improve as the game goes on.

There should be more games from them that are complete 60 minute efforts though. That's the type of consistency I want to see from them. Be the best team on the ice the whole game. It doesn't have to happen every game but it should happen more often.

I agree with that. I also maintain that they are playing at a disadvantage relative to other contenders because of the cap space they are sitting on. 8 mil is enough for a top 6 forward and a top 4 D. If the Rangers had that i think we'd see more consistency, and a lot more people in the hockey world would be buying in.

Luckily, it appears they will add these pieces in the coming weeks.

It feels like on MoneyPuck they have us favored to lose every single game. People probably made bank betting on us throughout this season lol
MoneyPuck is all based on their 'power rankings' which is essentially only xG%.

We dont have good 5v5 #'s. They dont account for Shesterkin though

You think their schedule has been fine? We must be watching 2 different teams. This has to be the most disjointed schedule for this team I can remember from a travel and road game perspective. Most road games played in the NHL including 2 western road trips. Have they even had an extended home stand? Go back and look at their last 15 games. 10 of 15 on the road, with 2 against Colorado, 2 against Vegas, 2 against Tampa, Florida, Predators, Ducks, Kings, Toronto. Their last road trip they had as many as 5-6 guys miss multiple games due to covid including the coach. So to say they have been fortunate from a scheduling and covid perspective is bull.

Look at all the Canadian teams who've had all these games cancelled because Canada was limiting capacity, teams who had all their stars on protocol at the same time, etc. We've been pretty fortunate

Are they poor predictors of success? I feel like people say they're the best. I am not into analytics though and am definitely one of the more anti-advanced stats people here. But unfortunately they do back up the eye test for me in this case. I don't see us generating offense at even strength, we don't have that same dynamic puck moving that we did through the Quinn years. I think we looked a lot more deadly with DeAngelo, Fox is great but doesn't have that same skating or high flying offense. Fox slows the game down, which is great, but we need some more speed on the back end. Jones plays a bit similar to DeAngelo but is a much weaker skater, I think a lot of us were expecting Lundkvist to play that type of game but in his brief stint he was a bit of a dud

I know you're like 3 years old, but this is outdated by like 5 or 6 years.

The Rangers arguably have had one of the worst schedules so far. Not by team difficulty but by amount of road games and travel. Those teams will have to make up those games and that is where the schedule will get worse for them. However they haven’t made up the missed games yet.

Also the Rangers got kind of unlucky with COVID. If you have a major outbreak games get canceled so the players miss less games. The Rangers straddled the line on the last road trip and we’re forced to play a lot of AHLers.

40 games into his time as a Ranger he had "matured" and turned his career around, too. Let's see where things are at a year or two from now.
Yeah, this isn't a young player naturally maturing with age. This is a player who needed a kick in the ass, saw his actions cost him around $2 million this year, and personally felt the majority of the 32-team league rather not have to deal with him. I'd bet on him keeping his head on straight through this year. Will he after he gets some financial security again? We'll see.
